1 Î n urmă, Pavel s'a dus la Derbe şi la Listra. Şi iată că acolo era un ucenic, numit Timotei, fiul unei iudeice credincioase şi al unui tată Grec.

And he came to Derbe and Lystra, and lo, a certain disciple was there, by name Timotheus son of a certain woman, a believing Jewess, but of a father, a Greek,

2 F raţii din Listra şi Iconia îl vorbeau de bine.

who was well testified to by the brethren in Lystra and Iconium;

3 P avel a vrut să -l ia cu el; şi, dupăce l -a luat, l -a tăiat împrejur, din pricina Iudeilor, cari erau în acele locuri; căci toţi ştiau că tatăl lui era Grec.

this one did Paul wish to go forth with him, and having taken, he circumcised him, because of the Jews who are in those places, for they all knew his father -- that he was a Greek.

4 P e cînd trecea prin cetăţi, învăţa pe fraţi să păzească hotărîrile apostolilor şi presbiterilor din Ierusalim.

And as they were going on through the cities, they were delivering to them the decrees to keep, that have been judged by the apostles and the elders who in Jerusalem,

5 B isericile se întăreau în credinţă, şi sporeau la număr din zi în zi.

then, indeed, were the assemblies established in the faith, and were abounding in number every day;

6 F iindcă au fost opriţi de Duhul Sfînt să vestească Cuvîntul în Asia, au trecut prin ţinutul Frigiei şi Galatiei.

and having gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia,

7 A junşi lîngă Misia, se pregăteau să intre în Bitinia; dar Duhul lui Isus nu le -a dat voie.

having gone toward Mysia, they were trying to go on toward Bithynia, and the Spirit did not suffer them,

8 A u trecut atunci prin Misia, şi s'au pogorît la Troa.

and having passed by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

9 N oaptea, Pavel a avut o vedenie: un om din Macedonia sta în picioare şi i -a făcut următoarea rugăminte:,, Treci în Macedonia, şi ajută-ne!``

And a vision through the night appeared to Paul -- a certain man of Macedonia was standing, calling upon him, and saying, `Having passed through to Macedonia, help us;' --

10 D upă vedenia aceasta a lui Pavel, am căutat îndată să ne ducem în Macedonia, căci înţelegeam că Domnul ne cheamă să le vestim Evanghelia.

and when he saw the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go forth to Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord hath called us to preach good news to them,

11 D upăce am pornit din Troa, am mers cu corabia drept la Samotracia, şi a doua zi ne-am oprit la Neapolis.

having set sail, therefore, from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, on the morrow also to Neapolis,

12 D e acolo ne-am dus la Filipi, care este cea dintîi cetate dintr'un ţinut al Macedoniei, şi o colonie romană. În cetatea aceasta am stat cîteva zile.

thence also to Philippi, which is a principal city of the part of Macedonia -- a colony. And we were in this city abiding certain days,

13 Î n ziua Sabatului am ieşit afară pe poarta cetăţii, lîngă un rîu, unde credeam că se află un loc de rugăciune. Am şezut jos, şi am vorbit femeilor, cari erau adunate laolaltă.

on the sabbath-day also we went forth outside of the city, by a river, where there used to be prayer, and having sat down, we were speaking to the women who came together,

14 U na din ele, numită Lidia, vînzătoare de purpură, din cetatea Tiatira, era o femeie temătoare de Dumnezeu, şi asculta. Domnul i -a deschis inima, ca să ia aminte la cele ce spunea Pavel.

and a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, worshipping God, was hearing, whose heart the Lord did open to attend to the things spoken by Paul;

15 D upă ce a fost botezată, ea şi casa ei, ne -a rugat şi ne -a zis:,, Dacă mă socotiţi credincioasă Domnului, intraţi şi rămîneţi în casa mea.`` Şi ne -a silit să intrăm.

and when she was baptized, and her household, she did call upon us, saying, `If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, having entered into my house, remain;' and she constrained us.

16 P e cînd ne duceam la locul de rugăciune, ne -a ieşit înainte o roabă, care avea un duh de ghicire (Greceşte: Un duh al lui Piton.). Prin ghicire, ea aducea mult cîştig stăpînilor ei.

And it came to pass in our going on to prayer, a certain maid, having a spirit of Python, did meet us, who brought much employment to her masters by soothsaying,

17 R oaba aceasta s'a luat după Pavel şi după noi, şi striga:,, Oamenii aceştia sînt robii Dumnezeului Celui Prea Înalt şi ei vă vestesc calea mîntuirii.``

she having followed Paul and us, was crying, saying, `These men are servants of the Most High God, who declare to us a way of salvation;'

18 A şa a făcut ea timp de mai multe zile. Pavel, necăjit, s'a întors, şi a zis duhului:,,În Numele lui Isus Hristos îţi poruncesc să ieşi din ea.`` Şi a ieşit chiar în ceasul acela.

and this she was doing for many days, but Paul having been grieved, and having turned, said to the spirit, `I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to come forth from her;' and it came forth the same hour.

19 C înd au văzut stăpînii roabei că s'a dus nădejdea cîştigului lor, au pus mîna pe Pavel şi pe Sila şi i-au tîrît în piaţă înaintea fruntaşilor.

And her masters having seen that the hope of their employment was gone, having caught Paul and Silas, drew to the market-place, unto the rulers,

20 I -au dat pe mîna dregătorilor, şi au zis:,, Oamenii aceştia ne tulbură cetatea; sînt nişte Iudei,

and having brought them to the magistrates, they said, `These men do exceedingly trouble our city, being Jews;

21 c ari vestesc nişte obiceiuri, pe cari noi, Romanii nu trebuie nici să le primim, nici să le urmăm.``

and they proclaim customs that are not lawful for us to receive nor to do, being Romans.'

22 N orodul s'a ridicat şi el împotriva lor, şi dregătorii au pus să le smulgă hainele de pe ei, şi au poruncit să -i bată cu nuiele.

And the multitude rose up together against them, and the magistrates having torn their garments from them, were commanding to beat with rods,

23 D upă ce le-au dat multe lovituri, i-au aruncat în temniţă, şi au dat în grijă temnicerului să -i păzească bine.

many blows also having laid upon them, they cast them to prison, having given charge to the jailor to keep them safely,

24 T emnicerul, ca unul care primise o astfel de poruncă, i -a aruncat în temniţa din lăuntru, şi le -a băgat picioarele în butuci.

who such a charge having received, did put them to the inner prison, and their feet made fast in the stocks.

25 P e la miezul nopţii, Pavel şi Sila se rugau, şi cîntau cîntări de laudă lui Dumnezeu; iar cei închişi îi ascultau.

And at midnight Paul and Silas praying, were singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were hearing them,

26 D eodată, s'a făcut un mare cutremur de pămînt, aşa că s'au clătinat temeliile temniţei. Îndată, s'au deschis toate uşile, şi s'au deslegat legăturile fiecăruia.

and suddenly a great earthquake came, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, opened also presently were all the doors, and of all -- the bands were loosed;

27 T emnicerul s'a deşteptat; şi, cînd a văzut uşile temniţei deschise, a scos sabia, şi era să se omoare, căci credea că cei închişi au fugit.

and the jailor having come out of sleep, and having seen the doors of the prison open, having drawn a sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to be fled,

28 D ar Pavel a strigat cu glas tare:,, Să nu-ţi faci nici un rău, căci toţi sîntem aici.``

and Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, `Thou mayest not do thyself any harm, for we are all here.'

29 A tunci temnicerul a cerut o lumină, a sărit înlăuntru, şi, tremurînd de frică, s'a aruncat la picioarele lui Pavel şi ale lui Sila;

And, having asked for a light, he sprang in, and trembling he fell down before Paul and Silas,

30 i -a scos afară, şi le -a zis:,, Domnilor, ce trebuie să fac ca să fiu mîntuit?``

and having brought them forth, said, `Sirs, what must I do -- that I may be saved?'

31 P avel şi Sila i-au răspuns:,, Crede în Domnul Isus, şi vei fi mîntuit tu şi casa ta.``

and they said, `Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved -- thou and thy house;'

32 Ş i i-au vestit Cuvîntul Domnului, atît lui cît şi tuturor celor din casa lui.

and they spake to him the word of the Lord, and to all those in his household;

33 T emnicerul i -a luat cu el, chiar în ceasul acela din noapte, le -a spălat rănile, şi a fost botezat îndată, el şi toţi ai lui.

and having taken them, in that hour of the night, he did bathe from the blows, and was baptized, himself and all his presently,

34 D upă ce i -a dus în casă, le -a pus masa, şi s'a bucurat cu toată casa lui că a crezut în Dumnezeu.

having brought them also into his house, he set food before, and was glad with all the household, he having believed in God.

35 C înd s'a făcut ziuă, dregătorii au trimes pe ceice purtau nuielele (Greceşte: lictori.), să spună temnicerului:,, Dă drumul oamenilor acelora.``

And day having come, the magistrates sent the rod-bearers, saying, `Let those men go;'

36 Ş i temnicerul a spus lui Pavel aceste cuvinte:,, Dregătorii au trimes să vi se dea drumul; acum dar, ieşiţi afară, şi duceţi-vă în pace.``

and the jailor told these words unto Paul -- `The magistrates have sent, that ye may be let go; now, therefore, having gone forth go on in peace;'

37 D ar Pavel le -a zis:,, După ce ne-au bătut cu nuiele în faţa tuturor, fără să fim judecaţi, pe noi, cari sîntem romani, ne-au aruncat în temniţă, şi acum ne scot afară pe ascuns! Nu merge aşa! Să vină ei singuri să ne scoată afară!``

and Paul said to them, `Having beaten us publicly uncondemned -- men, Romans being -- they did cast to prison, and now privately do they cast us forth! why no! but having come themselves, let them bring us forth.'

38 C eice purtau nuielele, au spus aceste cuvinte dregătorilor. Aceştia s'au temut, cînd au auzit că sînt romani.

And the rod-bearers told to the magistrates these sayings, and they were afraid, having heard that they are Romans,

39 D regătorii au venit să -i potolească, i-au scos afară din temniţă, şi i-au rugat să părăsească cetatea.

and having come, they besought them, and having brought forth, they were asking to go forth from the city;

40 E i au ieşit din temniţă, şi au intrat în casa Lidiei; şi, dupăce au văzut şi mîngîiat pe fraţi, au plecat.

and they, having gone forth out of the prison, entered into Lydia, and having seen the brethren, they comforted them, and went forth.
