1 A scultaţi, fiilor, învăţătura unui tată, şi luaţi aminte, ca să pricepeţi;

Hear, ye sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding.

2 c ăci eu vă dau sfaturi bune: nu lepădaţi învăţătura mea.

For good learning I have given to you, My law forsake not.

3 C ăci cînd eram încă fiu la tatăl meu, şi fiu gingaş şi singur la mama mea,

For, a son I have been to my father -- tender, And an only one before my mother.

4 e l mă învăţa atunci, şi-mi zicea:,, Păstrează bine în inima ta cuvintele mele, păzeşte învăţăturile mele, şi vei trăi!

And he directeth me, and he saith to me: `Let thy heart retain my words, Keep my commands, and live.

5 D obîndeşte înţelepciune, dobîndeşte pricepere; nu uita cuvintele gurii mele, şi nu te abate dela ele.

Get wisdom, get understanding, Do not forget, nor turn away From the sayings of my mouth.

6 N 'o părăsi, şi ea te va păzi; iubeşte -o, şi te va ocroti!

Forsake her not, and she doth preserve thee, Love her, and she doth keep thee.

7 I ată începutul înţelepciunii: dobîndeşte înţelepciunea, şi cu tot ce ai, dobîndeşte priceperea.

The first thing wisdom -- get wisdom, And with all thy getting get understanding.

8 Î nalţă -o, şi ea te va înălţa; ea va fi slava ta, dacă o vei îmbrăţişa.

Exalt her, and she doth lift thee up, She honoureth thee, when thou dost embrace her.

9 E a îţi va pune pe cap o cunună plăcută, te va împodobi cu o strălucită cunună împărătească.

She giveth to thy head a wreath of grace, A crown of beauty she doth give thee freely.

10 A scultă, fiule, primeşte cuvintele mele, şi anii vieţii tale se vor înmulţi.

Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And years of life multiplied to thee.

11 E u îţi arăt calea înţelepciunii, te povăţuiesc pe cărările neprihănirii.

In a way of wisdom I have directed thee, I have caused thee to tread in paths of uprightness.

12 C înd vei umbla, pasul nu-ţi va fi stînjenit; şi cînd vei alerga, nu te vei poticni.

In thy walking thy step is not straitened, And if thou runnest, thou stumblest not.

13 Ţ ine învăţătura, n'o lăsa din mînă; păstrează -o, căci ea este viaţa ta.

Lay hold on instruction, do not desist, Keep her, for she thy life.

14 N u intra pe cărarea celor răi, şi nu umbla pe calea celor nelegiuiţi!

Into the path of the wicked enter not, And be not happy in a way of evil doers.

15 F ereşte-te de ea, nu trece pe ea; ocoleşte -o, şi treci înainte!

Avoid it, pass not over into it, Turn aside from it, and pass on.

16 C ăci ei nu dorm, dacă n'au făcut răul, le piere somnul dacă nu fac pe cineva să cadă;

For they sleep not if they do not evil, And their sleep hath been taken violently away, If they cause not to stumble.

17 c ăci ei mănîncă pîne nelegiuită, şi beau vin stors cu sila.

For they have eaten bread of wickedness, And wine of violence they drink.

18 D ar cărarea celor neprihăniţi este ca lumina strălucitoare, a cărei strălucire merge mereu crescînd pînă la miezul zilei.

And the path of the righteous as a shining light, Going and brightening till the day is established,

19 C alea celor răi este ca întunerecul gros: ei nu văd de ce se vor poticni.

The way of the wicked as darkness, They have not known at what they stumble.

20 F iule, ia aminte la cuvintele mele, pleacă-ţi urechea la vorbele mele!

My son, to my words give attention, To my sayings incline thine ear,

21 S ă nu se depărteze cuvintele acestea de ochii tăi, păstrează-le în fundul inimii tale!

Let them not turn aside from thine eyes, Preserve them in the midst of thy heart.

22 C ăci ele sînt viaţă pentru cei ce le găsesc, şi sănătate pentru tot trupul lor.

For life they to those finding them, And to all their flesh healing.

23 P ăzeşte-ţi inima mai mult de cît orice, căci din ea ies izvoarele vieţii.

Above every charge keep thy heart, For out of it the outgoings of life.

24 I zgoneşte neadevărul din gura ta; şi depărtează viclenia de pe buzele tale!

Turn aside from thee a froward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee,

25 O chii tăi să privească drept, şi pleoapele tale să caute drept înaintea ta.

Thine eyes do look straightforward, And thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 C ărarea pe care mergi să fie netedă, şi toate căile tale să fie hotărîte:

Ponder thou the path of thy feet, And all thy ways established.

27 n u te abate nici la dreapta nici la stînga, şi fereşte-te de rău.

Incline not the right or to the left, Turn aside thy foot from evil!
