1 A scoltate, o figli, l'ammaestramento di un padre, e fate attenzione a imparare il discernimento,

Hear, ye sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding.

2 p erché vi do una buona dottrina; non abbandonate la mia legge.

For good learning I have given to you, My law forsake not.

3 Q uand'ero ancora fanciullo presso mio padre, tenero e caro agli occhi di mia madre,

For, a son I have been to my father -- tender, And an only one before my mother.

4 e gli mi ammaestrava e mi diceva: «Il tuo cuore ritenga le mie parole; custodisci i miei comandamenti e vivrai.

And he directeth me, and he saith to me: `Let thy heart retain my words, Keep my commands, and live.

5 A cquista sapienza, acquista intendimento; non dimenticare le parole della mia bocca e non allontanartene;

Get wisdom, get understanding, Do not forget, nor turn away From the sayings of my mouth.

6 n on abbandonare la sapienza, ed essa ti custodirà; amala, ed essa ti proteggerà.

Forsake her not, and she doth preserve thee, Love her, and she doth keep thee.

7 L a sapienza è la cosa piú importante; perciò acquista la sapienza. A costo di tutto ciò che possiedi, acquista l'intelligenza.

The first thing wisdom -- get wisdom, And with all thy getting get understanding.

8 E saltala ed essa ti innalzerà; ti otterrà gloria, se l'abbraccerai.

Exalt her, and she doth lift thee up, She honoureth thee, when thou dost embrace her.

9 E ssa metterà sul tuo capo un ornamento di grazia, ti circonderà di una corona di gloria».

She giveth to thy head a wreath of grace, A crown of beauty she doth give thee freely.

10 A scolta, figlio mio, ricevi le mie parole, e gli anni della tua vita si moltiplicheranno.

Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And years of life multiplied to thee.

11 T i ho ammaestrato nella via della sapienza, ti ho guidato per i sentieri della rettitudine.

In a way of wisdom I have directed thee, I have caused thee to tread in paths of uprightness.

12 Q uando camminerai, i tuoi passi non saranno intralciati; quando correrai, non inciamperai.

In thy walking thy step is not straitened, And if thou runnest, thou stumblest not.

13 A fferra saldamente l'ammaestramento, non lasciarlo andare; custodiscilo, perché esso è la tua vita.

Lay hold on instruction, do not desist, Keep her, for she thy life.

14 N on entrare nel sentiero degli empi e non camminare per la via dei malvagi;

Into the path of the wicked enter not, And be not happy in a way of evil doers.

15 e vitala, non passarvi; allontanati da essa e va' oltre.

Avoid it, pass not over into it, Turn aside from it, and pass on.

16 P oiché essi non possono dormire se non hanno fatto del male; il loro sonno svanisce, se non hanno fatto cadere qualcuno;

For they sleep not if they do not evil, And their sleep hath been taken violently away, If they cause not to stumble.

17 e ssi mangiano il pane dell'empietà e bevono il vino della violenza.

For they have eaten bread of wickedness, And wine of violence they drink.

18 M a il sentiero dei giusti è come la luce dell'aurora, che risplende sempre piú radiosa fino a giorno pieno.

And the path of the righteous as a shining light, Going and brightening till the day is established,

19 L a via degli empi è come l'oscurità; essi non scorgono ciò che li farà cadere.

The way of the wicked as darkness, They have not known at what they stumble.

20 F iglio mio, fa' attenzione alle mie parole, porgi l'orecchio ai miei detti

My son, to my words give attention, To my sayings incline thine ear,

21 n on si allontanino mai dai tuoi occhi, custodiscili nel centro del tuo cuore

Let them not turn aside from thine eyes, Preserve them in the midst of thy heart.

22 p erché sono vita per quelli che li trovano, guarigione per tutto il loro corpo.

For life they to those finding them, And to all their flesh healing.

23 C ustodisci il tuo cuore con ogni cura, perché da esso sgorgano le sorgenti della vita.

Above every charge keep thy heart, For out of it the outgoings of life.

24 R imuovi da te il parlare fraudolento e allontana da te le labbra perverse.

Turn aside from thee a froward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee,

25 I tuoi occhi guardino diritto e le tue palpebre mirino diritto davanti a te.

Thine eyes do look straightforward, And thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 A ppiana il sentiero dei tuoi piedi, e tutte le tue vie siano ben stabilite.

Ponder thou the path of thy feet, And all thy ways established.

27 N on deviare né a destra né a sinistra; ritira il tuo piede dal male.

Incline not the right or to the left, Turn aside thy foot from evil!
