1 C osí dice l'Eterno: «Ecco, io susciterò contro Babilonia e contro gli abitanti di Leb Kamai un vento distruttore.

Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am stirring up against Babylon, And the inhabitants of Leb -- My withstanders, A destroying wind,

2 M anderò contro Babilonia degli stranieri che la vaglieranno e svuoteranno il suo paese, perché nel giorno della calamità piomberanno su di lei da tutte le parti.

And I have sent to Babylon fanners, And they have fanned it, and they empty its land, For they have been against it, Round about -- in the day of evil.

3 N on lasciare che colui che tende l'arco tenda il suo arco o si rizzi nella sua corazza. Non risparmiate i suoi giovani, votate allo sterminio tutto il suo esercito.

Let not the treader tread his bow, Nor lift himself up in his coat of mail, Nor have ye pity on her young men, Devote ye to destruction all her host.

4 C osí essi cadranno uccisi nel paese dei Caldei e trafitti per le vie di Babilonia.

And fallen have the wounded in the land of the Chaldeans, And the pierced-through in her streets.

5 P oiché Israele, e Giuda non sono stati ripudiati dal loro DIO, dall'Eterno degli eserciti, anche se il loro paese era pieno di colpe contro il Santo d'Israele».

For, not forsaken is Israel and Judah, By its God -- by Jehovah of Hosts, For their land hath been full of guilt, Against the Holy One of Israel.

6 F uggite di mezzo a Babilonia e salvi ognuno la propria vita, guardate di non essere distrutti nella sua iniquità. Poiche questo è il tempo di vendetta dell'Eterno; egli le darà la giusta ricompensa.

Flee ye from the midst of Babylon, And deliver ye each his soul, Be not cut off in its iniquity, For a time of vengeance it to Jehovah, Recompence He is rendering to her.

7 B abilonia era nelle mani dell'Eterno una coppa d'oro che inebriava tutta la terra; le nazioni hanno bevuto del suo vino, perciò le nazioni sono divenute deliranti.

A golden cup Babylon in the hand of Jehovah, Making drunk all the earth, Of its wine drunk have nations, Therefore boast themselves do nations.

8 I mprovvisamente Babilonia è caduta è stata distrutta. Innalzate lamenti su di essa, prendete del balsamo per il suo dolore; forse può essere guarita.

Suddenly hath Babylon fallen, Yea, it is broken, howl ye for it, Take balm for her pain, if so be it may be healed.

We healed Babylon, and she was not healed, Forsake her, and we go, each to his land, For come unto the heavens hath its judgment, And it hath been lifted up unto the clouds.

10 L 'Eterno ha fatto trionfare la nostra giusta causa. Venite, raccontiamo in Sion l'opera dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO.

Jehovah hath brought forth our righteousnesses, Come, and we recount in Zion the work of Jehovah our God.

11 A ffilate le frecce, imbracciate gli scudi, L'Eterno ha risvegliato lo spirito dei re dei Medi, perché il suo disegno contro Babilonia è di distruggerla, poiché questa è la vendetta dell'Eterno, la vendetta del suo tempio.

Cleanse ye the arrows, fill the shields, Stirred up hath Jehovah the spirit of the kings of Madia, For against Babylon His device to destroy it, For the vengeance of Jehovah it, The vengeance of His temple.

12 A lzate la bandiera sulle mura di Babilonia. Rafforzate le guardie, disponete le sentinelle, preparate gli agguati. Poiché l'Eterno ha escogitato ed eseguito ciò che ha detto contro gli abitanti di Babilonia.

Unto the walls of Babylon lift up an ensign, Strengthen the watch, Establish the watchers, prepare the ambush, For Jehovah hath both devised and done that which He spake, Concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.

13 O tu che abiti presso grandi acque, ricca di tesori, la tua fine è giunta, il termine dei tuoi ingiusti guadagni.

O dweller on many waters, abundant in treasures, Come in hath thine end, the measure of thy dishonest gain.

14 L 'Eterno degli eserciti lo ha giurato per se stesso: «Io ti riempirò di uomini come di locuste che eleveranno contro di te grida di guerra».

Sworn hath Jehovah of Hosts by Himself, That, Surely I have filled thee men as the cankerworm, And they have cried against thee -- shouting.

15 E gli ha fatto la terra con la sua potenza, ha stabilito il mondo con la sua sapienza e con la sua intelligenza ha disteso i cieli,

The maker of earth by His power, The establisher of the world by His wisdom, Who by His understanding stretched out the heavens,

16 Q uando emette la sua voce, c'è un rumore di acque nel cielo; egli fa salire i vapori dalle estremità della terra, produce i lampi per la pioggia e fa uscire il vento dai suoi depositi.

At the voice He giveth forth, A multitude of waters in the heavens, And He causeth vapours to come up from the end of the earth, Lightnings for rain He hath made, And He bringeth out wind from His treasures.

17 O gni uomo allora diventa stupido, privo di conoscenza ogni orafo ha vergogna della sua immagine scolpita, perché la sua immagine fusa è una menzogna, e non c'è soffio vitale in loro.

Brutish hath been every man by knowledge, Put to shame hath been every refiner by a graven image, For false his molten image, And there is no breath in them.

18 S ono vanità, opera d'inganno; nel tempo della loro punizione periranno.

Vanity they -- work of errors, In the time of their inspection they perish.

19 L 'eredità di Giacobbe non è come loro, perché egli ha formato tutte le cose, e Israele è la tribú della sua eredità. Il suo nome è l'Eterno degli eserciti.

Not like these the portion of Jacob, For He former of all things, And the rod of His inheritance, Jehovah of Hosts His name.

20 « Tu sei per me un martello, uno strumento di guerra, con te schiaccerò le nazioni, con te distruggerò i regni;

An axe thou to me -- weapons of war, And I have broken in pieces by thee nations, And I have destroyed by thee kingdoms,

21 c on te frantumerò cavallo e cavaliere, con te frantumerò carro e cocchiere;

And I have broken in pieces by thee horse and its rider, And I have broken in pieces by thee chariot and its charioteer,

22 c on te frantumerò uomo e donna, con te frantumerò vecchio e fanciullo, con te frantumerò giovane e vergine;

And I have broken in pieces by thee man and woman, And I have broken in pieces by thee old and young, And I have broken in pieces by thee young man and virgin,

23 c on te frantumerò il pastore e il suo gregge, con te frantumerò il contadino e il suo paio di buoi, con te frantumerò governatori e magistrati.

And I have broken in pieces by thee shepherd and his drove, And I have broken in pieces by thee husbandman and his team, And I have broken in pieces by thee governors and prefects.

24 M a io ripagherò Babilonia e tutti gli abitanti della Caldea per tutto il male che hanno fatto a Sion sotto i vostri occhi». dice l'Eterno.

And I have recompensed to Babylon, And to all inhabitants of Chaldea, All the evil that they have done in Zion, Before your eyes -- an affirmation of Jehovah.

25 « Eccomi contro di te, o montagna di distruzione», dice l'Eterno, «tu che distruggi tutta la terra. Io stenderò la mia mano contro di te, ti rotolerò giú dalle rocce e farò di te una montagna bruciata.

Lo, I against thee, O destroying mount, An affirmation of Jehovah, That is destroying all the earth, And I have stretched out My hand against thee, And I have rolled thee from the rocks, And given thee for a burnt mountain.

26 D a te non si prenderà piú né pietra angolare, né pietra da fondamento, ma tu diventerai una desolazione per sempre» dice l'Eterno.

And they take not out of thee a stone for a corner, And a stone for foundations, For desolations age-during art thou, An affirmation of Jehovah.

27 A lzate una bandiera nel paese, suonate la tromba fra le nazioni; preparate le nazioni contro di lei, chiamate a raccolta contro di lei i regni: Ararat, Minni e Ashkenaz. Nominate contro di lei un comandante. Fate avanzare i cavalli come locuste irsute.

Lift ye up an ensign in the land, Blow a trumpet among nations, Sanctify against it nations, Summon against it the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz, Appoint against it an infant head, Cause the horse to ascend as the rough cankerworm.

28 P reparate contro di lei le nazioni, con i re di Media i suoi governatori, tutti i suoi magistrati e tutti i paesi dei suoi domini.

Sanctify against it the nations with the kings of Media, Its governors and all its prefects, And all the land of its dominion.

29 L a terra tremerà e sarà in doglie, perché i disegni dell'Eterno contro Babilonia si compiranno, di ridurre il paese di Babilonia una desolazione, senza abitanti.

And shake doth the land, and it is pained, For stood against Babylon have the purposes of Jehovah, To make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitant.

30 I prodi di Babilonia hanno smesso di combattere; sono rimasti nelle loro fortezze; la loro forza è venuta meno sono divenuti come donne. Hanno incendiato le sue abitazioni, le sbarre delle sue porte sono spezzate.

Ceased have the mighty of Babylon to fight, They have remained in strongholds, Failed hath their might, they have become woman, They have burnt her tabernacles, Broken have been her bars.

31 C orriere corre incontro a corriere e messaggero incontro a messaggero, per annunciare al re di Babilonia che la sua città è presa da ogni lato;

Runner to meet runner doth run, And announcer to meet announcer, To announce to the king of Babylon, For, captured hath been his city -- at the extremity.

32 i guadi sono occupati, le paludi sono in preda alle fiamme e gli uomini di guerra sono terrorizzati.

And the passages have been captured, And the reeds they have burnt with fire, And the men of war have been troubled.

33 P oiché cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele: «La figlia di Babilonia è come un'aia al tempo in cui la si calpesta; ancora un poco, e verrà per lei il tempo della mietitura».

For thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, The daughter of Babylon as a threshing-floor, The time of her threshing -- yet a little, And come hath the time of her harvest.

34 « Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia, ci ha divorati, ci ha schiacciati, ci ha ridotti a un vaso vuoto; ci ha inghiottiti come un dragone, ha riempito il suo ventre con i nostri cibi squisiti, ci ha cacciati via.

Devoured us, crushed us, hath Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, He hath set us an empty vessel, He hath swallowed us as a dragon, He hath filled his belly with my dainties, He hath driven us away.

35 L a violenza che è stata fatta a me e alla mia carne ricada su Babilonia» dirà l'abitante di Sion. «Il mio sangue ricada sugli abitanti di Caldea», dirà Gerusalemme.

My wrong, and my flesh on Babylon, Say doth the inhabitant of Zion, And my blood on the inhabitants of Chaldea, Say doth Jerusalem.

36 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno: «Ecco, io difenderò la tua causa e compirò la tua vendetta. Io farò prosciugare il suo mare e farò inaridire la sua sorgente.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am pleading thy cause, And I have avenged thy vengeance, And dried up its sea, and made its fountains dry.

37 B abilonia diventerà un cumulo di rovine, un rifugio per sciacalli un oggetto di stupore e di scherno, senza abitanti.

And Babylon hath been for heaps, A habitation of dragons, An astonishment, and a hissing, without inhabitant.

38 E ssi ruggiranno assieme come leoni, ringhieranno come cuccioli di leoni.

Together as young lions they roar, They have shaken themselves as lions' whelps.

39 Q uando avranno caldo, darò loro da bere, li inebrierò perché si rallegrino e si addormentino di un sonno perenne, senza piú risvegliarsi», dice l'Eterno.

In their heat I make their banquets, And I have caused them to drink, so that they exult, And have slept a sleep age-during, And awake not -- an affirmation of Jehovah.

40 « IO li farò scendere al macello come agnelli, come montoni insieme ai capri.

I cause them to go down as lambs to slaughter, As rams with he-goats.

41 C ome mai è stata presa Sceshak ed è stata conquistata la gloria di tutta la terra? Come mai Babilonia è diventata una desolazione fra le nazioni?

How hath Sheshach been captured, Yea, caught is the praise of the whole earth, How hath Babylon been for an astonishment among nations.

42 I l mare è salito sopra Babilonia; essa è stata sommersa dal fragore delle sue onde.

Come up against Babylon hath the sea, With a multitude of its billows it hath been covered.

43 L e sue città sono diventate una desolazione, una terra arida, un deserto, un paese dove non abita alcuno, attraverso cui non passa alcun figlio d'uomo.

Its cities have been for a desolation, A dry land, and a wilderness, A land -- none doth dwell in them, Nor pass over into them doth a son of man.

44 I O punirò Bel in Babilonia e farò uscire dalla sua bocca ciò che ha ingoiato e le nazioni non affluiranno piú a lui. Perfino le mura di Babilonia cadranno.

And I have seen after Bel in Babylon, And I have brought forth that which he swallowed -- from his mouth, And flow no more unto him do nations, Also the wall of Babylon hath fallen.

45 U scite di mezzo ad essa, o popolo mio, e salvi ciascuno la propria vita davanti all'ardente ira dell'Eterno.

Go forth from its midst, O My people, And deliver ye, each his soul, Because of the fierceness of the anger of Jehovah,

46 N on venga meno il vostro cuore e non spaventatevi delle notizie che si udranno nel paese, perché un anno giungerà una notizia e l'anno dopo un'altra notizia. Ci sarà nel paese violenza, dominatore contro dominatore.

And lest your heart be tender, And ye be afraid of the report that is heard in the land, And come in a year hath the report, And after it in a year the report, And violence in the land, ruler against ruler;

47 P erciò ecco, verranno i giorni nei quali io punirò le immagini scolpite di Babilonia; tutto il suo paese sarà coperto di vergogna e tutti i suoi feriti a morte cadranno in mezzo a lei.

Therefore, lo, days are coming, And I have seen after the graven images of Babylon. And all its land is ashamed, And all its pierced ones do fall in its midst.

48 A llora i cieli, la terra e tutto ciò che è in essi esulteranno su Babilonia, perché i devastatori verranno contro di lei dal nord», dice l'Eterno.

And cried aloud against Babylon Have heavens and earth, and all that in them, For, from the north come to it do the spoilers, An affirmation of Jehovah.

49 C ome Babilonia ha fatto cadere i feriti a morte d'Israele, cosí in Babilonia cadranno i feriti a morte di tutto il paese.

Even Babylon to fall, ye pierced of Israel, Even they of Babylon have fallen, Ye pierced of all the earth.

50 V oi scampati dalla spada partite, non fermatevi; ricordatevi da lontano dell'Eterno, e Gerusalemme vi torni in cuore.

Ye escaped of the sword, go on, stand not, Remember ye from afar Jehovah, And let Jerusalem come up on your heart.

51 C i vergognamo nell'udire il vituperio, la vergogna ha coperto la nostra faccia, perché stranieri sono entrati nel santuario della casa dell'Eterno.

We have been ashamed, for we heard reproach, Covered hath shame our faces, For come in have strangers, against the sanctuaries of the house of Jehovah.

52 « Perciò ecco, verranno i giorni», dice l'Eterno, «nei quali punirò le sue immagini scolpite e in tutto il suo paese gemeranno i feriti a morte.

Therefore, lo, days are coming, An affirmation of Jehovah, And I have seen after its graven images, And in all its land groan doth the wounded.

53 A nche se Babilonia salisse fino al cielo, anche se rendesse inaccessibile la sua elevata forza da parte mia verranno contro di essa dei devastatori», dice l'Eterno.

Because Babylon goeth up to the heavens, And because it fenceth the high place of its strength, From Me come into it do spoilers, An affirmation of Jehovah.

54 I l rumore di un grido giunge da Babilonia di una grande distruzione dal paese dei Caldei.

A voice of a cry from Babylon, And of great destruction from the land of the Chaldean.

55 P oiché l'Eterno devasta Babilonia e fa cessare il suo grande rumore; le loro onde tumultuano, il rumore della loro voce si eleva.

For Jehovah is spoiling Babylon, And hath destroyed out of it a great voice, And sounded have its billows as many waters, Given forth a noise hath their voice.

56 I l devastatore infatti è venuto contro di essa, contro Babilonia; i suoi prodi sono catturati, i loro archi spezzati, perché l'Eterno è il Dio delle retribuzioni; egli ripagherà certamente.

For come in against it -- against Babylon -- hath a spoiler, And captured have been its mighty ones, Broken have been their bows, For the God of recompences -- Jehovah -- doth certainly repay.

57 I O inebrierò i suoi principi, i suoi savi, i suoi governatori, i suoi magistrati e i suoi prodi, ed essi dormiranno un sonno eterno e non si desteranno piú», dice il Re, il cui nome è l'Eterno degli eserciti.

And I have caused its princes to drink, And its wise men, its governors, And its prefects, and its mighty ones, And they have slept a sleep age-during, And they awake not -- an affirmation of the king, Jehovah of Hosts His name.

58 C osí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti: «Le larghe mura di Babilonia saranno interamente distrutte, le sue alte porte saranno arse col fuoco; cosí i popoli avranno lavorato per nulla e le nazioni si saranno stancate solamente per il fuoco».

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, the wall of Babylon -- The broad one -- is utterly made bare, And her high gates with fire are burnt, And peoples labour in vain, And nations in fire, and have been weary!

59 O rdine che il profeta Geremia diede a Seraiah figlio di Neriah, figlio di Mahseiah, quando andò a Babilonia con Sedekia, re di Giuda, nell'anno quarto del suo regno. Seraiah era capo dei ciambellani.

The word that Jeremiah the prophet hath commanded Seraiah son of Neriah, son of Maaseiah, in his going with Zedekiah king of Judah to Babylon, in the fourth year of his reign -- and Seraiah a quiet prince;

60 C osí Geremia scrisse in un libro tutto il male che doveva accadere a Babilonia, tutte queste parole che sono scritte contro Babilonia.

and Jeremiah writeth all the evil that cometh unto Babylon on one book -- all these words that are written concerning Babylon.

61 E Geremia disse a Seraiah: «Quando arriverai a Babilonia, abbi cura di leggere tutte queste parole,

And Jeremiah saith unto Seraiah, `When thou dost enter Babylon, then thou hast seen, and hast read all these words,

62 e dirai: "O Eterno, tu hai detto di questo luogo che lo avresti distrutto, e che non vi sarebbe rimasto piú nessuno, né uomo né bestia, ma che sarebbe diventato una desolazione perpetua"

and hast said: Jehovah, Thou, Thou hast spoken concerning this place, to cut it off, that there is none dwelling in it, from man even unto cattle, for it is a desolation age-during.

63 Q uando poi avrai finito di leggere questo libro, legherai su di esso una pietra e lo getterai in mezzo all'Eufrate,

And it hath come to pass, when thou dost finish reading this book, thou dost bind to it a stone, and hast cast it into the midst of Phrat,

64 e dirai: Cosí affonderà Babilonia e non si rialzerà piú dalla calamità che farò venire su di lei; ed essi saranno esausti. Fin qui le parole di Geremia.

and said, Thus sink doth Babylon, and it doth not arise, because of the evil that I am bringing in against it, and they have been weary.' Hitherto words of Jeremiah.
