1 A chab in Samaria, aveva settanta figli. Jehu scrisse delle lettere e le mandò a Samaria ai capi della città, agli anzianie ai tutori dei figli di Achab; in esse diceva:

And Ahab hath seventy sons in Samaria, and Jehu writeth letters, and sendeth to Samaria, unto the heads of Jezreel, the elders, and unto the supporters of Ahab, saying,

2 « Appena vi giungerà questa lettera, siccome avete con voi i figli del vostro signore e avete carri e cavalli, una città fortificata e le armi,

`And now, at the coming in of this letter unto you, and with you sons of your lord, and with you the chariots and the horses, and a fenced city, and the armour,

3 s cegliete il figlio migliore e piú adatto del vostro signore, mettetelo sul trono di suo padre e combattete per la casa del vostro signore».

and ye have seen the best and the uprightest of the sons of your lord, and have set on the throne of his father, and fight ye for the house of your lord.'

4 M a quelli ebbero una grande paura e dissero: «Ecco due re non hanno potuto resistergli; come potremo resistergli noi?».

And they fear very greatly, and say, `Lo, the two kings have not stood before him, and how do we stand -- we?'

5 P erciò il prefetto del palazzo, il governatore della città, gli anziani e i tutori dei figli di Achab mandarono a dire a Jehu: «Noi siamo tuoi servi e faremo tutto quello che ci ordinerai; non eleggeremo re nessuno; fa' ciò che meglio ti pare»

And he who over the house, and he who over the city, and the elders, and the supporters, send unto Jehu, saying, `Thy servants we, and all that thou sayest unto us we do; we do not make any one king -- that which good in thine eyes do.'

6 A llora egli scrisse loro una seconda lettera, in cui diceva: «Se siete con me e volete ubbidire alla mia voce, prendete le teste di quegli uomini, dei figli del vostro signore e venite da me a Jezreel, domani a quest'ora». Ora i figli del re, in numero di settanta, stavano con i nobili della città, che li educavano.

And he writeth unto them a letter a second time, saying, `If ye for me, and to my voice are hearkening, take the heads of the men -- the sons of your lord, and come unto me about this time to-morrow, to Jezreel;' and the sons of the king seventy men, with the great ones of the city those bringing them up.

7 C ome questi ricevettero la lettera, presero i figli del re e li scannarono tutti e settanta, poi misero le loro teste in ceste e le mandarono a Jehu in Jezreel.

And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the letter unto them, that they take the sons of the king, and slaughter seventy men, and put their heads in baskets, and send unto him to Jezreel,

8 C osí venne un messaggero a riferirgli la cosa, dicendo: «Hanno portato le teste dei figli del re». Jehu rispose: «Mettetele in due mucchi all'entrata della porta fino a domani mattina».

and the messenger cometh in, and declareth to him, saying, `They have brought in the heads of the sons of the king,' and he saith, `Make them two heaps at the opening of the gate till the morning.'

9 I l mattino seguente egli uscí e, stando in piedi, disse a tutto il popolo: «Voi siete giusti, ecco, io ho cospirato contro il mio signore e l'ho ucciso, ma chi ha uccisi tutti questi?

And it cometh to pass in the morning, that he goeth out, and standeth, and saith unto all the people, `Righteous are ye; lo, I have conspired against my lord, and slay him -- and who smote all these?

10 R iconoscete dunque, che non è caduta a terra neppure una delle parole dell'Eterno che l'Eterno ha pronunciato contro la casa di Achab, l'Eterno infatti ha compiuto ciò che aveva detto per mezzo del suo servo Elia.

Know ye now, that nothing doth fall of the word of Jehovah to the earth that Jehovah spake against the house of Ahab, and Jehovah hath done that which He spake by the hand of His servant Elijah.'

11 C osí Jehu fece morire tutti quelli che erano rimasti della casa di Achab a Jezreel, tutti i suoi grandi i suoi amici e i suoi sacerdoti, senza lasciarne neppure uno.

And Jehu smiteth all those left to the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his acquaintances, and his priests, till he hath not left to him a remnant.

12 P oi si levò e partí per andare a Samaria. Lungo la strada, giunto a Beth-Eked,

And he riseth, and cometh in and goeth to Samaria; he at the shepherds' shearing-house in the way,

13 J ehu incontrò i fratelli di Achaziah re di Giuda, e disse: «Chi siete?». Quelli risposero: «Siamo i fratelli di Achaziah, e scendiamo a salutare i figli del re e i figli della regina».

and Jehu hath found the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and saith, `Who ye?' and they say, `Brethren of Ahaziah we, and we go down to salute the sons of the king, and the sons of the mistress.'

14 A llora egli ordinò: «Prendeteli vivi!» Cosí li presero vivi e li scannarono presso il pozzo di Beth-Eked, in numero di quarantadue; non ne risparmiò neppure uno

And he saith, `Catch them alive;' and they catch them alive, and slaughter them at the pit of the shearing-house, forty and two men, and he hath not left a man of them.

15 P artito di là, trovò Jehonadab, figlio di Rekab, che gli veniva incontro; lo salutò e gli disse: «E il tuo cuore retto come il mio è verso il tuo?». Jehonadab rispose: «Lo è». «Se è cosí». disse Jehu, «dammi la mano». Allora egli gli diede la mano, cosí lo fece salire con sé sul carro e gli disse:

And he goeth thence, and findeth Jehonadab son of Rechab -- to meet him, and blesseth him, and saith unto him, `Is thy heart right, as my heart with thy heart?' and Jehonadab saith, `It is;' -- `Then it is; give thy hand;' and he giveth his hand, and he causeth him to come up into him into the chariot,

16 « Vieni con me e vedrai il mio zelo per l'Eterno!». Quindi lo portò via nel suo carro.

and saith, `Come with me, and look on my zeal for Jehovah;' and they cause him to ride in his chariot.

17 G iunto a Samaria, uccise tutti quelli che erano rimasti della casa di Achab in Samaria, fino alla sua completa distruzione, secondo la parola che l'Eterno aveva detto a Elia.

And he cometh in to Samaria, and smiteth all those left to Ahab in Samaria, till his destroying him, according to the word of Jehovah that He spake unto Elisha.

18 P oi Jehu radunò tutto il popolo e gli disse: «Achab ha servito un poco Baal, ma Jehu lo servirà molto di piú.

And Jehu gathereth the whole of the people, and saith unto them, `Ahab served Baal a little -- Jehu doth serve him much:

19 O ra convocate presso di me tutti i profeti di Baal, tutti i suoi servi e tutti i suoi sacerdoti, non ne manchi neppure uno, perché devo fare un grande sacrificio a Baal, chiunque mancherà non sarà lasciato in vita». Ma Jehu agiva con inganno per distruggere gli adoratori di Baal.

and now, all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests, call ye unto me; let not a man be lacking, for a great sacrifice I have for Baal; every one who is lacking -- he doth not live;' and Jehu hath done in subtilty, in order to destroy the servants of Baal.

20 Q uindi Jehu ordinò: «Proclamate una festa solenne in onore di Baal!». Cosí la proclamarono.

And Jehu saith, `Sanctify a restraint for Baal;' and they proclaim.

21 P oi Jehu inviò messaggeri per tutto Israele; cosí tutti gli adoratori di Baal vennero, e non vi fu neppure uno che si astenesse di venire, entrarono nel tempio di Baal, e il tempio di Baal fu ripieno da un capo all'altro.

And Jehu sendeth into all Israel, and all the servants of Baal come in, and there hath not been left a man who hath not come in; and they come in to the house of Baal, and the house of Baal is full -- mouth to mouth.

22 J ehu disse quindi al guardarobiere: «Tira fuori le vesti per tutti gli adoratori di Baal». Cosí egli tirò fuori le vesti per loro.

And he saith to him who over the wardrobe, `Bring out clothing to all servants of Baal;' and he bringeth out to them the clothing.

23 A llora Jehu, assieme a Jehonadab figlio di Rekab, entrò nel tempio di Baal e disse agli adoratori di Baal: «Cercate bene e guardate che qui con voi non vi sia alcun servo dell'Eterno, ma soltanto adoratori di Baal».

And Jehu goeth in, and Jehonadab son of Rechab, to the house of Baal, and saith to the servants of Baal, `Search and see, lest there be here with you of the servants of Jehovah -- but, the servants of Baal by themselves.'

24 C osí essi entrarono per offrire sacrifici e olocausti. Ora Jehu aveva appostato fuori del tempio ottanta uomini, ai quali aveva detto: «Se qualcuno lascerà fuggire uno solo degli uomini che metto nelle vostre mani, pagherà con la propria vita la vita di quel tale».

And they come in to make sacrifices and burnt-offerings, and Jehu hath set for himself in an out-place eighty men, and saith, `The man who letteth escape of the men whom I am bringing in unto your hand -- his soul for his soul.'

25 C osí, appena terminò di compiere l'offerta dell'olocausto, Jehu ordinò alle guardie e ai capitani: «Entrate, uccideteli e non lasciate che alcuno scappi!». Perciò essi li passarono a fil di spada; poi le guardie e i capitani li buttarono fuori e penetrarono nella parte interna del tempio di Baal;

And it cometh to pass at his finishing to make the burnt-offering, that Jehu saith to the runners, and to the captains, `Go in, smite them, let none come out;' and they smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the runners and the captains cast out; and they go unto the city, to the house of Baal,

26 q uindi portarono fuori le colonne sacre del tempio di Baal e le bruciarono.

and bring out the standing-pillars of the house of Baal, and burn them,

27 P oi demolirono la statua di Baal e demolirono il tempio di Baal, e lo ridussero in un immondezzaio che rimane fino ad oggi.

and break down the standing-pillar of Baal, and break down the house of Baal, and appoint it for a draught-house unto this day.

28 C osí Jehu fece scomparire Baal da Israele;

And Jehu destroyeth Baal out of Israel,

29 t uttavia egli non si ritrasse dai peccati di Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, con i quali aveva fatto peccare Israele, e cioè, dai vitelli d'oro che erano a Bethel e a Dan.

only -- the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, that he caused Israel to sin, Jehu hath not turned aside from after them -- the calves of gold that at Beth-El, and in Dan.

30 L 'Eterno quindi disse a Jehu: «Poiché hai agito bene, facendo ciò che è giusto ai miei occhi, e hai fatto alla casa di Achab tutto quello che avevo in cuore, i tuoi figli siederanno sul trono d'Israele fino alla quarta generazione»

And Jehovah saith unto Jehu, `Because that thou hast done well, to do that which right in Mine eyes -- according to all that in My heart thou hast done to the house of Ahab -- the sons of the fourth do sit for thee on the throne of Israel.'

31 M a Jehu non si curò di seguire con tutto il cuore la legge dell'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele; egli infatti non si allontanò dai peccati di Geroboamo, con i quali aveva fatto peccare Israele.

And Jehu hath not taken heed to walk in the law of Jehovah, God of Israel, with all his heart, he hath not turned aside from the sins of Jeroboam, that he caused Israel to sin.

32 I n quel tempo l'Eterno cominciò a tagliar via alcune parti da Israele; infatti Hazael sconfisse gl'Israeliti su tutta la loro frontiera:

In those days hath Jehovah begun to cut off in Israel, and Hazael smiteth them in all the border of Israel,

33 d al Giordano verso oriente, occupò tutto il paese di Galaad, i Gaditi, i Rubeniti e i Manassiti, da Aroer, che è vicino al torrente Arnon, fino a Galaad e Bashan.

from the Jordan, at the sun-rising, the whole land of Gilead, of the Gadite, and the Reubenite, and the Manassahite (from Aroer, that by the brook Arnon), even Gilead and Bashan.

34 I l resto delle gesta di Jehu, tutto ciò che fece e tutte le sue prodezze non è scritto nel libro delle Cronache dei re d'Israele?

And the rest of the matters of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

35 P oi Jehu si addormentò con i suoi padri e lo seppellirono a Samaria. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Jehoahaz.

And Jehu lieth with his fathers, and they bury him in Samaria, and reign doth Jehoahaz his son in his stead.

36 I l tempo in cui Jehu regnò sopra Israele a Samaria, fu di ventotto anni.

And the days that Jehu hath reigned over Israel twenty and eight years, in Samaria.
