1 G iuseppe diede quest'ordine al maggiordomo di casa sua dicendo: Riempi i sacchi di questi uomini di tanti viveri quanti ne possono portare e metti il denaro di ciascuno alla bocca del suo sacco.

And he commandeth him who over his house, saying, `Fill the bags of the men food, as they are able to bear, and put the money of each in the mouth of his bag;

2 I noltre metti la mia coppa, la coppa d'argento, alla bocca del sacco del piú giovane, assieme al denaro del suo grano». Ed egli fece come Giuseppe aveva detto.

and my cup, the silver cup, thou dost put in the mouth of the bag of the young one, and his corn-money;' and he doth according to the word of Joseph which he hath spoken.

3 L a mattina, non appena fu giorno, quegli uomini furono fatti partire coi loro asini.

The morning is bright, and the men have been sent away, they and their asses --

4 E rano appena usciti dalla città e non erano ancora lontani, quando Giuseppe disse al maggiordomo di casa sua: Levati, insegui quegli uomini e, quando li avrai raggiunti, di' loro: "Perché avete reso male per bene?

they have gone out of the city -- they have not gone far off -- and Joseph hath said to him who over his house, `Rise, pursue after the men; and thou hast overtaken them, and thou hast said unto them, Why have ye recompensed evil for good?

5 N on è quella la coppa in cui il mio signore beve, e della quale si serve per indovinare? Avete fatto male a fare così"».

Is not this that with which my lord drinketh? and he observeth diligently with it; ye have done evil that which ye have done.'

6 E gli li raggiunse e disse loro queste parole.

And he overtaketh them, and speaketh unto them these words,

7 E ssi allora gli risposero: Perché il mio signore ci rivolge parole come queste? Lungi dai tuoi servi il fare una tale cosa!

and they say unto him, `Why doth my lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word;

8 E cco, noi ti abbiamo riportato dal paese di Canaan il denaro che avevamo trovato alla bocca dei nostri sacchi; come avremmo potuto rubare dell'argento o dell'oro dalla casa del tuo signore?

lo, the money which we found in the mouth of our bags we brought back unto thee from the land of Canaan, and how do we steal from the house of thy lord silver or gold?

9 Q uello dei tuoi servi presso il quale si troverà la coppa, sia messo a morte; e noi pure diventeremo schiavi del tuo signore».

with whomsoever of thy servants it is found, he hath died, and we also are to my lord for servants.'

10 E gli disse: «Ebbene, sia fatto come dite: colui presso il quale la coppa si troverà sarà mio schiavo; e voi sarete innocenti».

And he saith, `Now, also, according to your words, so it; he with whom it is found becometh my servant, and ye are acquitted;'

11 C osì ciascuno di loro si affrettò a mettere a terra il suo sacco, e ciascuno aprì il suo.

and they hasten and take down each his bag to the earth, and each openeth his bag;

12 I l maggiordomo li frugò, cominciando col maggiore, per finire col piú giovane; e la coppa fu trovata nel sacco di Beniamino.

and he searcheth -- at the eldest he hath begun, and at the youngest he hath completed -- and the cup is found in the bag of Benjamin;

13 A llora essi si stracciarono le vesti ricaricarono ciascuno il suo asino e tornarono nella città.

and they rend their garments, and each ladeth his ass, and they turn back to the city.

14 G iuda e i suoi fratelli arrivarono alla casa di Giuseppe, che si trovava ancora là, e si gettarono a terra davanti a lui.

And Judah -- his brethren also -- cometh in unto the house of Joseph, and he is yet there, and they fall before him to the earth;

15 E Giuseppe disse loro: «Che azione è questa che avete fatto? Non lo sapete che un uomo come me è in grado di indovinare?».

and Joseph saith to them, `What this deed that ye have done? have ye not known that a man like me doth diligently observe?'

16 G iuda rispose: «Che diremo al mio signore? Quali parole useremo, o come ci potremo giustificare? DIO ha ritrovato l'iniquità dei tuoi servi. Ecco, siamo schiavi del mio signore, tanto noi quanto colui in mano del quale è stata trovata la coppa».

And Judah saith, `What do we say to my lord? what do we speak? and what -- do we justify ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants; lo, we servants to my lord, both we, and he in whose hand the cup hath been found;'

17 M a Giuseppe disse: «Lungi da me il fare questo! L'uomo, in mano del quale è stata trovata la coppa, sarà mio schiavo; quanto a voi, ritornate in pace da vostro padre».

and he saith, `Far be it from me to do this; the man in whose hand the cup hath been found, he becometh my servant; and ye, go ye up in peace unto your father.'

18 A llora Giuda si accostò a Giuseppe e disse: «Di grazia, signor mio, permetti al tuo servo di far udire una parola al mio signore, e non si accenda l'ira tua contro il tuo servo, perché tu sei come il Faraone.

And Judah cometh nigh unto him, and saith, `O, my lord, let thy servant speak, I pray thee, a word in the ears of my lord, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant -- for thou art as Pharaoh.

19 I l mio signore interrogò i suoi servi, dicendo: "Avete voi padre o fratello?".

My lord hath asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father or brother?

20 E noi rispondemmo al mio signore: "Abbiamo un padre che è vecchio con un giovane figlio, natogli nella vecchiaia; suo fratello è morto, così egli è rimasto l'unico figlio di sua madre; e suo padre l'ama".

and we say unto my lord, We have a father, an aged one, and a child of old age, a little one; and his brother died, and he is left alone of his mother, and his father hath loved him.

21 A llora tu dicesti ai tuoi servi: "Portatemelo, perché lo possa vedere coi miei occhi".

`And thou sayest unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, and I set mine eye upon him;

22 E noi dicemmo al mio signore: "Il fanciullo non può lasciare suo padre, perché se lo dovesse lasciare, suo padre morrebbe".

and we say unto my lord, The youth is not able to leave his father, when he hath left his father, then he hath died;

23 M a tu dicesti ai tuoi servi: "Se il vostro fratello piú giovane non scende con voi, voi non vedrete piú la mia faccia".

and thou sayest unto thy servants, If your young brother come not down with you, ye add not to see my face.

24 C osì quando fummo risaliti dal tuo servo, mio padre, gli riferimmo le parole del mio signore.

`And it cometh to pass, that we have come up unto thy servant my father, that we declare to him the words of my lord;

25 A llora nostro padre disse: "Tornate a comperarci un po' di viveri".

and our father saith, Turn back, buy for us a little food,

26 N oi rispondemmo: "Non possiamo scendere laggiù; solo se il nostro fratello piú giovane verrà con noi, scenderemo; perché non possiamo vedere la faccia di quell'uomo, se il nostro fratello piú giovane non è con noi".

and we say, We are not able to go down; if our young brother is with us, then we have gone down; for we are not able to see the man's face, and our young brother not with us.

27 E il tuo servo, mio padre, ci rispose: "Voi sapete che mia moglie mi partorì due figli;

`And thy servant my father saith unto us, Ye -- ye have known that two did my wife bare to me,

28 u no di essi mi lasciò, e io dissi: Certo, egli è stato sbranato; e non l'ho più rivisto da allora;

and the one goeth out from me, and I say, Surely he is torn -- torn! and I have not seen him since;

29 o r se mi togliete anche questi e se gli avviene qualche disgrazia voi farete scendere nel dolore la mia canizie nella tomba".

when ye have taken also this from my presence, and mischief hath met him, then ye have brought down my grey hairs with evil to sheol.

30 O r dunque quando giungerò dal tuo servo mio padre se il fanciullo non è con noi, poiché la sua vita è legata a quella del fanciullo,

`And now, at my coming in unto thy servant my father, and the youth not with us (and his soul is bound up in his soul),

31 a vverrà che appena avrà visto che il fanciullo non è con noi, egli morirà; e i tuoi servi avranno fatto scendere nel dolore la canizie del tuo servo, nostro padre, nella tomba.

then it hath come to pass when he seeth that the youth is not, that he hath died, and thy servants have brought down the grey hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to sheol;

32 O ra, siccome il tuo servo si è reso garante del fanciullo presso mio padre e gli ha detto: "Se non te lo riconduco sarò per sempre colpevole verso mio padre"

for thy servant obtained the youth by surety from my father, saying, If I bring him not in unto thee -- then I have sinned against my father all the days.

33 d eh, permetti ora che il tuo servo rimanga schiavo del mio signore al posto del fanciullo, e che il fanciullo se ne torni con i suoi fratelli.

`And now, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the youth a servant to my lord, and the youth goeth up with his brethren,

34 P erché, come potrei ritornare da mio padre, se il fanciullo non è con me? Ah, che io non veda il dolore che coglierebbe mio padre!».

for how do I go up unto my father, and the youth not with me? lest I look on the evil which doth find my father.'
