1 L a parola che fu rivolta dall'Eterno a Geremia, quando Nebukadnetsar re di Babilonia con tutto il suo esercito e tutti i regni della terra su cui egli dominava e tutti i popoli combattevano contro Gerusalemme e contro tutte le sue città, dicendo:

The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah -- and Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his force, and all kingdoms of the land of the dominion of his hand, and all the peoples are fighting against Jerusalem, and against all its cities -- saying:

2 « Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: Va' e parla a Sedekia, re di Giuda, e digli: Cosí dice l'Eterno: Ecco, io do questa città in mano del re di Babilonia che la darà alle fiamme

`Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel: Go, and thou hast spoken unto Zedekiah king of Judah, and hast said unto him, Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he hath burned it with fire,

3 T u non scamperai dalla sua mano ma sarai certamente preso e dato in suo potere, i tuoi occhi vedranno gli occhi del re di Babilonia, egli ti parlerà faccia a faccia e tu andrai a Babilonia».

and thou, thou dost not escape out of his hand, for thou art certainly caught, and into his hand thou art given, and thine eyes see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and his mouth with thy mouth speaketh, and Babylon thou enterest.

4 T uttavia ascolta la parola dell'Eterno, o Sedekia, re di Giuda: «Cosí dice l'Eterno riguardo a te: Non morirai di spada.

`Only, hear a word of Jehovah, O Zedekiah king of Judah, Thus said Jehovah unto thee: Thou dost not die by sword,

5 M a morirai in pace; e come bruciarono aromi per i tuoi padri, gli antichi re che furono prima di te, cosí bruceranno aromi per te e faranno cordoglio per te dicendo: Ahimè, Signore! Sí, io ho pronunciato questa parola», dice l'Eterno.

in peace thou diest, and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings who have been before thee, so they make a burning for thee; and Ah, lord, they lament for thee, for the word I have spoken -- an affirmation of Jehovah.'

6 I l profeta Geremia disse tutte queste parole a Sedekia, re di Giuda, in Gerusalemme,

And Jeremiah the prophet speaketh unto Zedekiah king of Judah all these words in Jerusalem,

7 m entre l'esercito del re di Babilonia combatteva contro Gerusalemme e contro tutte le città di Giuda che ancora rimanevano, cioè contro Lakish e Azekah, che erano le uniche città fortificate rimaste fra le città di Giuda.

and the forces of the king of Babylon are fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that are left -- against Lachish, and against Azekah, for these have been left among the cities of Judah, cities of fortresses.

8 Q uesta è la parola che fu rivolta dall'Eterno a Geremia, dopo che il re Sedekia ebbe fatto un patto con tutto il popolo che era in Gerusalemme per proclamare ad essi libertà:

The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after the making by the king Zedekiah of a covenant with all the people who in Jerusalem, to proclaim to them liberty,

9 c ioè che ognuno rimandasse liberi i suoi schiavi ebrei, tanto maschi che femmine, uomo o donna, affinché nessuno tenesse piú schiavo alcun suo fratello giudeo.

to send out each his man-servant, and each his maid-servant -- the Hebrew and the Hebrewess -- free, so as not to lay service on them, any on a Jew his brother;

10 T utti i principi e tutto il popolo che avevano aderito al patto acconsentirono a rimandare liberi ognuno il proprio schiavo e la propria schiava e a non tenerli piú in schiavitú, e li rimandarono.

and hearken do all the heads, and all the people who have come in to the covenant to send forth each his man-servant and each his maid-servant free, so as not to lay service on them any more, yea, they hearken, and send them away;

11 I n seguito però cambiarono parere e fecero ritornare gli schiavi e le schiave che avevano rimandati liberi e li assoggettarono di nuovo come loro schiavi e schiave.

and they turn afterwards, and cause the men-servants and the maid-servants to return, whom they had sent forth free, and they subdue them for men-servants and for maid-servants.

12 L a parola dell'Eterno fu quindi rivolta dall'Eterno a Geremia, dicendo:

And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying:

13 « Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: Io stabilii un patto con i vostri padri il giorno che li feci uscire dal paese d'Egitto, dalla casa di servitú, dicendo:

`Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I -- I made a covenant with your fathers in the day of My bringing them forth from the land of Egypt, from a house of servants, saying,

14 A l termine di sette anni ognuno rimanderà libero il proprio fratello ebreo che gli è stato venduto; egli ti servirà sei anni, poi lo manderai via da te libero. Ma i vostri padri non mi ubbidirono e non prestarono orecchio.

At the end of seven years ye do send forth each his brother, the Hebrew, who is sold to thee, and hath served thee six years, yea, thou hast sent him forth free from thee: and your fathers hearkened not unto Me, nor inclined their ear.

15 V oi oggi eravate tornati a fare ciò che è retto ai miei occhi, proclamando ciascuno la libertà del proprio fratello, e avevate stabilito un patto davanti a me, nel tempio, dove è invocato il mio nome.

`And ye turn back, ye to-day, and ye do that which is right in Mine eyes, to proclaim liberty each to his neighbour, and ye make a covenant before Me in the house over which My name is called.

16 I n seguito però avete cambiato parere e avete profanato il mio nome, perché avete fatto ritornare ciascuno il suo schiavo e la sua schiava che avevate rimandati liberi a loro piacere, e li avete assoggettati ad esservi come schiavi e schiave».

And -- ye turn back, and pollute My name, and ye cause each his man-servant and each his maid-servant, whom he had sent forth free, (at their pleasure,) to return, and ye subdue them to be to you for men-servants and for maid-servants.

17 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno: «Voi non mi avete ubbidito proclamando la libertà ciascuno del proprio fratello e ciascuno del proprio prossimo. Ora ecco, io proclamo a voi la libertà», dice l'Eterno, «per la spada, per la peste e per la fame e vi abbandonerò ad essere maltrattati in tutti i regni della terra.

`Therefore, thus said Jehovah: Ye have not hearkened unto Me to proclaim freedom, each to his brother, and each to his neighbour; lo, I am proclaiming to you liberty -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- unto the sword, unto the pestilence, and unto the famine, and I have given you for a trembling to all kingdoms of the earth.

18 E darò gli uomini che hanno trasgredito il mio patto e non hanno eseguito le parole del patto che avevano stabilito davanti a me, passando in mezzo alle parti del vitello che avevano tagliato in due:

`And I have given the men who are transgressing My covenant, who have not established the words of the covenant that they have made before Me, by the calf, that they have cut in two, and pass through between its pieces --

19 i principi di Giuda e i principi di Gerusalemme, gli eunuchi, i sacerdoti e tutto il popolo del paese che passarono in mezzo alle parti del vitello,

heads of Judah, and heads of Jerusalem, the officers, and the priests, and all the people of the land those passing through between the pieces of the calf --

20 l i darò in mano dei loro nemici e in mano di quelli che cercano la loro vita; e i loro cadaveri saranno pasto per gli uccelli del cielo e per le bestie della terra.

yea, I have given them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their soul, and their carcase hath been for food to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth.

21 D arò Sedekia, re di Giuda, e i suoi principi in mano dei loro nemici, in mano di quelli che cercano la loro vita e in mano dell'esercito del re di Babilonia che si è allontanato da voi.

`And Zedekiah king of Judah, and his heads, I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their soul, and into the hand of the forces of the king of Babylon, that are going up from off you.

22 E cco, io darò l'ordine». dice l'Eterno, «e li farò ritornare contro questa città, combatteranno contro di lei, la prenderanno, la daranno alle fiamme, e farò delle città di Giuda una desolazione senza abitanti».

Lo, I am commanding -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- and have brought them back unto this city, and they have fought against it, and captured it, and burned it with fire, and the cities of Judah I do make a desolation -- without inhabitant.'
