1 C ome mai siede solitaria la città che era gremita di popolo? La grande fra le nazioni è divenuta come una vedova: la principessa fra le province è stata sottoposta a tributo.

How hath she sat alone, The city abounding with people! She hath been as a widow, The mighty among nations! Princes among provinces, She hath become tributary!

2 E ssa piange amaramente nella notte, le sue lacrime le rigano le guance; fra tutti i suoi amanti non ha alcuno che la consoli; tutti i suoi amici l'hanno tradita, le sono diventati nemici.

She weepeth sore in the night, And her tear on her cheeks, There is no comforter for her out of all her lovers, All her friends dealt treacherously by her, They have been to her for enemies.

3 G iuda, è andato in cattività, gravato da afflizione e dura schiavitù, egli abita in mezzo alle nazioni non trova riposo; tutti i suoi persecutori l'hanno raggiunto tra le avversità.

Removed hath Judah because of affliction, And because of the abundance of her service; She hath dwelt among nations, She hath not found rest, All her pursuers have overtaken her between the straits.

4 L e strade di Sion sono in lutto, perché nessuno piú viene alle feste solenni; tutte le sue porte sono deserte, i suoi sacerdoti sospirano, le sue vergini sono afflitte ed essa è nell'amarezza.

The ways of Zion are mourning, Without any coming at the appointed time, All her gates are desolate, her priests sigh, Her virgins are afflicted -- and she hath bitterness.

5 I suoi avversari sono divenuti i dominatori, i suoi nemici prosperano, perché l'Eterno l'ha afflitta per la moltitudine delle sue trasgressioni; i suoi bambini sono andati in cattività davanti al nemico.

Her adversaries have become chief, Her enemies have been at ease, For Jehovah hath afflicted her, For the abundance of her transgressions, Her infants have gone captive before the adversary.

6 D alla figlia di Sion è scomparso tutto il suo splendore; i suoi capi sono diventati come cervi che non trovano pascolo; camminano senza forze davanti a chi li insegue.

And go out from the daughter of Zion doth all her honour, Her princes have been as harts -- They have not found pasture, And they go powerless before a pursuer.

7 N ei giorni della sua afflizione e del suo vagare Gerusalemme, ricorda tutti i beni preziosi che possedeva fin dai giorni antichi. Quando il suo popolo cadeva in mano del nemico e nessuno le veniva in aiuto, i suoi avversari la vedevano e ridevano per la sua rovina.

Remembered hath Jerusalem the days of her affliction and her mournings, all her desirable things that were from the days of old, In the falling of her people into the hand of an adversary, And she hath no helper; Seen her have adversaries, They have laughed at her cessation.

8 G erusalemme ha grandemente peccato, perciò è divenuta una cosa immonda tutti quelli che l'onoravano la disprezzano, perché hanno visto la sua nudità; si essa sospira e si volge indietro.

A sin hath Jerusalem sinned, Therefore impure she hath become, All who honoured her have esteemed her lightly, For they have seen her nakedness, Yea, she herself hath sighed and turneth backward.

9 L a sua lordura era nei lembi della sua veste, non pensava alla sua fine; perciò è caduta in modo sorprendente, senza che alcuno la consoli. «Guarda, o Eterno, la mia afflizione, perché il nemico si innalza».

Her uncleanness in her skirts, She hath not remembered her latter end, And she cometh down wonderfully, There is no comforter for her. See, O Jehovah, mine affliction, For exerted himself hath an enemy.

10 L 'avversario ha steso la sua mano su tutti i tuoi tesori, perché ha visto le nazioni entrare nel suo santuario; quelle a cui tu avevi comandato di non entrare nella tua assemblea.

His hand spread out hath an adversary On all her desirable things, For she hath seen -- Nations have entered her sanctuary, Concerning which Thou didst command, `They do not come into the assembly to thee.'

11 T utto il suo popolo sospira in cerca di pane; danno le loro cose piú preziose in cambio di cibo per riprendere vita. «Guarda, o Eterno, e considera come sono diventata spregevole!».

All her people are sighing -- seeking bread, They have given their desirable things For food to refresh the body; See, O Jehovah, and behold attentively, For I have been lightly esteemed.

12 « Nulla di simile vi avvenga, o voi che passate vicino. Mirate e guardate, se c'è dolore simile al mio dolore, quello che mi tormenta è che l'Eterno mi ha inflitto nel giorno della sua ira ardente.

nothing to you, all ye passing by the way? Look attentively, and see, If there is any pain like my pain, That He is rolling to me? Whom Jehovah hath afflicted In the day of the fierceness of His anger.

13 D all'alto ha mandato un fuoco nelle mie ossa, si è impadronito di esse, ha teso una rete ai miei piedi, mi ha fatto tornare indietro, mi ha reso desolata, nel languore tutti i giorni.

From above He hath sent fire into my bone, And it subdueth it, He hath spread a net for my feet, He hath turned me backward, He hath made me desolate -- all the day sick.

14 D alla sua mano è stato legato il giogo delle mie trasgressioni, che s'intrecciano insieme e gravano sul mio collo ha fatto venir meno la mia forza; il Signore mi ha dato nelle mani di coloro ai quali non posso resistere.

Bound hath been the yoke of my transgressions by His hand, They are wrapped together, They have gone up on my neck, He hath caused my power to stumble, The Lord hath given me into hands, I am not able to rise.

15 I l Signore ha atterrato nel mio mezzo tutti i miei prodi; ha convocato contro di me un'assemblea, per schiacciare i miei giovani; il Signore ha pigiato come in un tino la vergine figlia di Giuda.

Trodden down all my mighty ones hath the Lord in my midst, He proclaimed against me an appointed time, To destroy my young men, A wine-press hath the Lord trodden, To the virgin daughter of Judah.

16 P er questo io piango, i miei occhi, i miei stessi occhi si sciolgono in lacrime, perché il consolatore che potrebbe ridarmi la vita è lontano da me. I miei figli sono desolati, perché il nemico ha trionfato».

For these I am weeping, My eye, my eye, is running down with waters, For, far from me hath been a comforter, Refreshing my soul, My sons have been desolate, For mighty hath been an enemy.

17 S ion tende le sue mani, ma non c'è alcuno che la consoli. Riguardo a Giacobbe, l'Eterno ha comandato che quelli attorno a lui divenissero suoi nemici. Gerusalemme è diventata in mezzo a loro come una cosa impura.

Spread forth hath Zion her hands, There is no comforter for her, Jehovah hath charged concerning Jacob, His neighbours his adversaries, Jerusalem hath become impure among them.

18 L 'Eterno è giusto, perché mi sono ribellata alla sua parola. Deh, ascoltate, o popoli tutti, e vedete il mio dolore! Le mie vergini e i miei giovani sono andati in cattività.

Righteous is Jehovah, For His mouth I have provoked. Hear, I pray you, all ye peoples, and see my pain, My virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.

19 H o chiamato i miei amanti, ma essi mi hanno ingannata; i miei sacerdoti e i miei anziani, hanno esalato l'ultimo respiro nella città, mentre cercavano cibo per salvare la loro vita.

I called for my lovers, they -- they have deceived me, My priests and my elders in the city have expired; When they have sought food for themselves, Then they give back their soul.

20 V edi, o Eterno, che io sono in angoscia. Le mie viscere fremono, il mio cuore è sconvolto dentro di me, perché sono stata grandemente ribelle. Fuori mi priva di figli la spada, in casa è come morte.

See, O Jehovah, for distress to me, My bowels have been troubled, Turned hath been my heart in my midst, For I have greatly provoked, From without bereaved hath the sword, In the house as death.

21 M i odono sospirare, nessuno mi consola. Tutti i miei nemici hanno saputo della mia sciagura e sono contenti che tu hai fatto questo. Tu farai venire il giorno che hai annunciato, e allora saranno come me

They have heard that I have sighed, There is no comforter for me, All my enemies have heard of my calamity, They have rejoiced that Thou hast done, Thou hast brought in the day Thou hast called, And they are like to me.

22 V enga davanti a te tutta la loro malvagità, e trattali come hai trattato me a motivo di tutte le mie trasgressioni. Poiché molti sono i miei sospiri e il mio cuore languisce.

Come in doth all their evil before Thee, And one is doing to them as Thou hast done to me, For all my transgressions, For many my sighs, and my heart sick!
