1 P oiché l'Eterno avrà pietà di Giacobbe, sceglierà ancora Israele e li ristabilirà sulla loro terra, gli stranieri si uniranno a loro e si stringeranno alla casa di Giacobbe.

Because Jehovah loveth Jacob, And hath fixed again on Israel, And given them rest on their own land, And joined hath been the sojourner to them, And they have been admitted to the house of Jacob.

2 I popoli li prenderanno e li ricondurranno nel loro paese e la casa d'Israele li possederà nel paese dell'Eterno come servi e serve; faranno prigionieri quelli che li avevano fatti prigionieri e regneranno sui loro oppressori.

And peoples have taken them, And have brought them in unto their place, And the house of Israel have inherited them, On the land of Jehovah, For men-servants and for maid-servants, And they have been captors of their captors, And have ruled over their exactors.

3 C osí nel giorno in cui l'Eterno ti avrà dato riposo dal tuo affanno, dalla tua agitazione e dalla dura schiavitú alla quale eri stato asservito,

And it hath come to pass, In the day of Jehovah's giving rest to thee, From thy grief, and from thy trouble, And from the sharp bondage, That hath been served upon thee,

4 t u pronunzierai questa sentenza sul re di Babilonia e dirai: «Come è finito l'oppressore, l'esattrice d'oro è finita.

That thou hast taken up this simile Concerning the king of Babylon, and said, How hath the exactor ceased,

5 L 'Eterno ha spezzato il bastone degli empi, lo scettro dei despoti.

Ceased hath the golden one. Broken hath Jehovah the staff of the wicked, The sceptre of rulers.

6 C olui che nel suo furore percuoteva i popoli con colpi incessanti, colui che dominava con ira sulle nazioni è inseguito senza misericordia.

He who is smiting peoples in wrath, A smiting without intermission, He who is ruling in anger nations, Pursuing without restraint!

7 T utta la terra riposa tranquilla, la gente erompe in gridi di gioia.

At rest -- quiet hath been all the earth, They have broken forth singing.

8 P erfino i cipressi e i cedri del Libano gioiscono per te e dicono: "Da quando sei atterrato, nessun tagliabosco è piú salito contro di noi".

Even firs have rejoiced over thee, Cedars of Lebanon --: Since thou hast lain down, The hewer cometh not up against us.

9 L o Sceol, di sotto è in agitazione per te, per farsi incontro al tuo arrivo; esso risveglia gli spiriti dei trapassati, tutti i principi della terra; ha fatto alzare dai loro troni tutti i re delle nazioni.

Sheol beneath hath been troubled at thee, To meet thy coming in, It is waking up for thee Rephaim, All chiefs ones of earth, It hath raised up from their thrones All kings of nations.

10 T utti prendono la parola per dirti: Anche tu sei diventato debole come noi e sei divenuto simile a noi.

All of them answer and say unto thee, Even thou hast become weak like us! Unto us thou hast become like!

11 I l tuo fasto è precipitato nello Sceol assieme al suono delle tue arpe; sotto di te si stende un letto di vermi e i vermi sono la tua coperta

Brought down to Sheol hath been thine excellency, The noise of thy psaltery, Under thee spread out hath been the worm, Yea, covering thee is the worm.

12 C ome mai sei caduto dal cielo, o Lucifero, figlio dell'aurora? Come mai sei stato gettato a terra, tu che atterravi le nazioni?

How hast thou fallen from the heavens, O shining one, son of the dawn! Thou hast been cut down to earth, O weakener of nations.

13 T u dicevi in cuor tuo: "Io salirò in cielo, innalzerò il mio trono al di sopra delle stelle di Dio; mi siederò sul monte dell'assemblea, nella parte estrema del nord;

And thou saidst in thy heart: the heavens I go up, Above stars of God I raise my throne, And I sit in the mount of meeting in the sides of the north.

14 s alirò sulle parti piú alte delle nubi, sarò simile all'Altissimo".

I go up above the heights of a thick cloud, I am like to the Most High.

15 I nvece sarai precipitato nello Sceol, nelle profondità della fossa,

Only -- unto Sheol thou art brought down, Unto the sides of the pit.

16 Q uanti ti vedono ti guardano fisso, ti osservano attentamente e dicono: "E' questo l'uomo che faceva tremare la terra, che scuoteva i regni,

Thy beholders look to thee, to thee they attend, Is this the man causing the earth to tremble, Shaking kingdoms?

17 c he ridusse il mondo come un deserto, distrusse le sue città e non lasciò mai andar liberi i suoi prigionieri?"

He hath made the world as a wilderness, And his cities he hath broken down, Of his bound ones he opened not the house.

18 T utti i re delle nazioni, tutti quanti riposano in gloria, ciascuno nel proprio sepolcro;

All kings of nations -- all of them, Have lain down in honour, each in his house,

19 t u invece sei stato gettato lontano dalla tua tomba come un germoglio abominevole, come un vestito di uccisi trafitti colla spada, che scendono sui sassi della fossa, come un cadavere calpestato.

And -- thou hast been cast out of thy grave, As an abominable branch, raiment of the slain, Thrust through ones of the sword, Going down unto the sons of the pit, As a carcase trodden down.

20 T u non sarai riunito a loro nella sepoltura, perché hai distrutto il tuo paese e hai ucciso il tuo popolo; la discendenza dei malfattori non sarà piú nominata.

Thou art not united with them in burial, For thy land thou hast destroyed, Thy people thou hast slain, Not named to the age is the seed of evil doers.

21 P reparate il massacro dei suoi figli a causa della iniquità dei loro padri, perché non si alzino piú a prendere possesso della terra e a riempire la faccia del mondo di città.

Prepare ye for his sons slaughter; Because of the iniquity of their fathers, They rise not, nor have possessed the land, Nor filled the face of the world cities.

22 I o mi leverò contro di loro dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, e sterminerò da Babilonia il nome e i superstiti, la progenie e la discendenza dice l'Eterno.

And I have risen up against them, (The affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts,) And have cut off, in reference to Babylon, Name and remnant, and continuator and successor, The affirmation of Jehovah.

23 e farò il dominio del porcospino e paludi di acqua, la spazzerò con la scopa della distruzione dice l'Eterno degli eserciti».

And have made it for a possession of a bittern, And ponds of waters, And daubed it with the mire of destruction, The affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts!

24 L 'Eterno degli eserciti ha giurato, dicendo: «In verità come ho pensato, cosí sarà, e come ho deciso, cosí accadrà.

Sworn hath Jehovah of Hosts, saying, `As I thought -- so hath it not been? And as I counselled -- it standeth;

25 F rantumerò l'Assiro nel mio paese e lo calpesterò sui miei monti; allora il suo giogo sarà rimosso da essi, e il suo carico sarà rimosso dalle loro spalle.

To break Asshur in My land, And on My mountains I tread him down, And turned from off them hath his yoke, Yea, his burden from off their shoulder turneth aside.

26 Q uesto è il piano deciso contro tutta la terra e questa è la mano stesa contro tutte le nazioni.

This the counsel that is counselled for all the earth, And this the hand that is stretched out for all the nations.

27 P oiché l'Eterno degli eserciti ha deciso questo e chi potrà annullarlo? La sua mano è stesa e chi potrà fargliela ritirare?».

For Jehovah of Hosts hath purposed, And who doth make void? And His hand that is stretched out, Who doth turn it back?'

28 N ell'anno della morte del re Achaz fu pronunciata questa profezia:

In the year of the death of king Ahaz was this burden:

29 « Non ti rallegrare, o Filistia tutta quanta, perché la verga che ti colpiva è spezzata! Poiché dalla radice del serpente uscirà una vipera, e il suo frutto sarà un serpente ardente e volante.

Rejoice not thou, Philistia, all of thee, That broken hath been the rod of thy smiter, For from the root of a serpent cometh out a viper, And its fruit a flying saraph.

30 I primogeniti dei poveri avranno di che cibarsi e i bisognosi riposeranno al sicuro; ma farò morire di fame la tua radice, e questo distruggerà il tuo residuo.

And delighted have the first-born of the poor, And the needy in confidence lie down, And I have put to death with famine thy root, And thy remnant it slayeth.

31 U rla, o porta, grida, o città! Struggi, o Filistia tutta quanta, perché dal nord viene un fumo, e nessuno lascia il suo posto nelle sue schiere».

Howl, O gate; cry, O city, Melted art thou, Philistia, all of thee, For from the north smoke hath come, And there is none alone in his set places.

32 C he si risponderà ai messaggeri di questa nazione? «Che l'Eterno ha fondato Sion e in essa gli afflitti del suo popolo trovano rifugio».

And what doth one answer the messengers of a nation? `That Jehovah hath founded Zion, And in it do the poor of His people trust!'
