1 O r i Filistei vennero a battaglia con Israele e gl'Israeliti fuggirono davanti ai Filistei, e caddero uccisi sul monte Ghilboa.

And the Philistines are fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel flee from the face of the Philistines, and fall wounded in mount Gilboa,

2 I Filistei inseguirono accanitamente Saul e i suoi figli; così i Filistei uccisero Gionathan, Abinadab e Malkishuah figli di Saul.

and the Philistines follow Saul and his sons, and the Philistines smite Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, sons of Saul.

3 L a battaglia si fece aspra contro Saul; gli arcieri lo raggiunsero ed egli fu gravemente ferito dagli arcieri.

And the battle is hard against Saul, and the archers find him -- men with bow -- and he is pained greatly by the archers;

4 S aul disse al suo scudiero: «Sfodera la tua spada e trafiggimi con essa, non vengano questi incirconcisi a trafiggermi e a farsi beffe di me». Ma il suo scudiero non volle, perché era tutto spaventato. Allora Saul prese la spada e vi si gettò sopra.

and Saul saith to the bearer of his weapons, `Draw thy sword, and pierce me with it, lest they come -- these uncircumcised -- and have pierced me, and rolled themselves on me;' and the bearer of his weapons hath not been willing, for he is greatly afraid, and Saul taketh the sword, and falleth upon it.

5 Q uando lo scudiero vide che Saul era morto, si gettò anch'egli sulla propria spada e morì con lui.

And the bearer of his weapons seeth that Saul dead, and he falleth -- he also -- on his sword, and dieth with him;

6 C osì in quel giorno morirono insieme Saul, i suoi tre figli il suo scudiero e tutti i suoi uomini.

and Saul dieth, and three of his sons, and the bearer of his weapons, also all his men, on that day together.

7 Q uando gli Israeliti che erano di là dalla valle e che erano di là dal Giordano videro che gli uomini d'Israele si erano dati alla fuga e che Saul e i suoi figli erano morti. abbandonarono le città e fuggirono. Allora vennero i Filistei e vi si stabilirono.

And they see -- the men of Israel, who beyond the valley, and who beyond the Jordan -- that the men of Israel have fled, and that Saul and his sons have died, and they forsake the cities and flee, and Philistines come in, and dwell in them.

8 I l giorno dopo; i Filistei vennero a spogliare gli uccisi e trovarono Saul e i suoi tre figli caduti sul monte Ghilboa.

And it cometh to pass on the morrow, that the Philistines come to strip the wounded, and they find Saul and his three sons fallen on mount Gilboa,

9 E ssi tagliarono la testa a Saul, lo spogliarono della sua armatura e mandarono messaggeri per tutto il paese dei Filistei a portare la notizia nel tempio dei loro idoli e al popolo.

and they cut off his head, and strip off his weapons, and send into the land of the Philistines round about, to proclaim tidings the house of their idols, and the people;

10 C ollocarono quindi la sua armatura nel tempio di Ashtaroth, e appesero il suo cadavere alle mura di Beth-Shan.

and they place his weapons the house of Ashtaroth, and his body they have fixed on the wall of Beth-Shan.

11 M a quando gli abitanti di Jabesh di Galaad vennero a sapere ciò che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul,

And they hear regarding it -- the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead -- that which the Philistines have done to Saul,

12 t utti gli uomini valorosi si levarono, camminarono tutta la notte e tolsero dalle mura di Beth-Shan il cadavere di Saul e i cadaveri dei suoi figli; poi tornarono a Jabesh e qui li bruciarono.

and all the men of valour arise, and go all the night, and take the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Beth-Shan, and come in to Jabesh, and burn them there,

13 P resero quindi le loro ossa, le seppellirono sotto il tamarisco di Jabesh e digiunarono per sette giorni.

and they take their bones, and bury under the tamarisk in Jabesh, and fast seven days.
