1 « Porgete orecchio, o cieli, e io parlerò; e ascolta, o terra, le parole della mia bocca.

`Give ear, O heavens, and I speak; And thou dost hear, O earth, sayings of my mouth!

2 I l mio insegnamento scenderà come la pioggia, la mia parola stillerà come la rugiada, come la pioggerella sull'erba tenera e come un acquazzone sugli arbusti,.

Drop as rain doth My doctrine; Flow as dew doth My sayings; As storms on the tender grass, And as showers on the herb,

3 p oiché io proclamo il nome dell'Eterno. Magnificate il nostro DIO!

For the Name of Jehovah I proclaim, Ascribe ye greatness to our God!

4 E gli è la Roccia, l'opera sua è perfetta, poiché tutte le sue vie sono giustizia. E' un Dio di fedeltà e senza ingiustizia; egli è giusto e retto.

The Rock! -- perfect His work, For all His ways just; God of stedfastness, and without iniquity: Righteous and upright He.

5 M a essi si sono corrotti; non sono suoi figli, a motivo della loro colpa, generazione contorta e perversa.

It hath done corruptly to Him; Their blemish is not His sons', A generation perverse and crooked!

6 E ' così che ripagate l'Eterno, o popolo stolto e insensato? Non è lui tuo padre che ti ha comprato? Non è lui che ti ha fatto e ti ha stabilito?

To Jehovah do ye act thus, O people foolish and not wise? Is not He thy father -- thy possessor? He made thee, and doth establish thee.

7 R icorda i giorni antichi, considera gli anni delle molte età passate, interroga tuo padre, ed egli te lo annuncierà, ai tuoi vecchi ed essi te lo diranno.

Remember days of old -- Understand the years of many generations -- Ask thy father, and he doth tell thee; Thine elders, and they say to thee:

8 Q uando l'Altissimo diede alle nazioni la loro eredità, quando separò i figli di Adamo, egli fissò i confini dei popoli, in base al numero dei figli d'Israele.

In the Most High causing nations to inherit, In His separating sons of Adam -- He setteth up the borders of the peoples By the number of the sons of Israel.

9 P oiché la parte dell'Eterno è il suo popolo, Giacobbe è la porzione della sua eredità.

For Jehovah's portion His people, Jacob the line of His inheritance.

10 E gli lo trovò in una terra deserta, in una solitudine desolata e squallida. Egli lo circondò, ne prese cura e lo custodì come la pupilla del suo occhio.

He findeth him in a land -- a desert, And in a void -- a howling wilderness, He turneth him round -- He causeth him to understand -- He keepeth him as the apple of His eye.

11 C ome un'aquila incita la sua nidiata, si libra sopra i suoi piccoli, spiega le sue ali, li prende e li porta sulle sue ali,

As an eagle waketh up its nest, Over its young ones fluttereth, Spreadeth its wings -- taketh them, Beareth them on its pinions; --

12 l 'Eterno lo guidò da solo, e non c'era con lui alcun dio straniero.

Jehovah alone doth lead him, And there is no strange god with him.

13 E gli l'ha fatto cavalcare sulle alture della terra, perché potesse mangiare il prodotto dei campi; gli ha fatto succhiare il miele dalla roccia e l'olio dalla roccia di silice,

He maketh him ride on high places of earth, And he eateth increase of the fields, And He maketh him suck honey from a rock, And oil out of the flint of a rock;

14 l a crema delle vacche e il latte delle pecore con il grasso degli agnelli, i montoni di Bashan e i capri con il fior di farina di frumento; e tu hai bevuto il vino, il sangue dell'uva.

Butter of the herd, and milk of the flock, With fat of lambs, and rams, sons of Bashan, And he-goats, with fat of kidneys of wheat; And of the blood of the grape thou dost drink wine!

15 M a Jeshurun si è ingrassato e ha recalcitrato (ti sei fatto grasso, grosso e pingue); ha abbandonato Dio che l'ha fatto e ha disprezzato la Roccia della sua salvezza.

And Jeshurun waxeth fat, and doth kick: Thou hast been fat -- thou hast been thick, Thou hast been covered. And he leaveth God who made him, And dishonoureth the Rock of his salvation.

16 E ssi l'hanno mosso a gelosia con dèi stranieri, l'hanno provocato ad ira con abominazioni.

They make Him zealous with strangers, With abominations they make Him angry.

17 H anno sacrificato a dèmoni che non sono Dio, a dèi che non avevano conosciuto, a dèi nuovi, apparsi di recente, che i vostri padri non avevano temuto.

They sacrifice to demons -- no god! Gods they have not known -- New ones -- from the vicinity they came; Not feared them have your fathers!

18 H ai trascurato la Roccia che ti ha generato e hai dimenticato il Dio che ti ha formato.

The Rock that begat thee thou forgettest, And neglectest God who formeth thee.

19 M a l'Eterno vide questo e li respinse, a motivo della provocazione dei suoi figli e delle sue figlie,

And Jehovah seeth and despiseth -- For the provocation of His sons and His daughters.

20 e disse: lo nasconderò loro la mia faccia e vedrò quale sarà la loro fine, perché sono una generazione perversa, figli in cui non vi è alcuna fedeltà.

And He saith: I hide My face from them, I see what their latter end; For a froward generation they, Sons in whom is no stedfastness.

21 E ssi mi hanno reso geloso con ciò che non è Dio, mi hanno provocato ad ira con i loro idoli vani; e io li renderò gelosi con gente che non è un popolo, li provocherò ad ira con una nazione stolta.

They have made Me zealous by `no-god,' They made Me angry by their vanities; And I make them zealous by `no-people,' By a foolish nation I make them angry.

22 P oiché un fuoco si è acceso nella mia ira e brucerà fino nel piú profondo dello Sceol; divorerà la terra e i suoi prodotti e darà fuoco alle fondamenta delle montagne.

For a fire hath been kindled in Mine anger, And it burneth unto Sheol -- the lowest, And consumeth earth and its increase, And setteth on fire foundations of mountains.

23 I o accumulerò su loro calamità, esaurirò contro di loro le mie frecce.

I gather upon them evils, Mine arrows I consume upon them.

24 E ssi saranno consumati dalla Fame, divorati da un caldo bruciante e da terribile pestilenza; manderò contro di loro le zanne delle belve, con il veleno dei serpenti che strisciano nella polvere.

Exhausted by famine, And consumed by heat, and bitter destruction. And the teeth of beasts I send upon them, With poison of fearful things of the dust.

25 D i fuori li priverà dei figli la spada, di dentro il terrore, facendo perire insieme il giovane e la vergine, il lattante e l'uomo canuto.

Without bereave doth the sword, And at the inner-chambers -- fear, Both youth and virgin, Suckling with man of grey hair.

26 I o ho detto: "Li spazzerò via, farò scomparire il loro ricordo di mezzo agli uomini",

I have said: I blow them away, I cause their remembrance to cease from man;

27 m a temo la provocazione del nemico, perché i loro avversari, mal interpretando, potrebbero dire: "La nostra mano ha trionfato, e non l'Eterno che ha fatto tutto questo!".

If not -- the anger of an enemy I fear, Lest their adversaries know -- Lest they say, Our hand is high, And Jehovah hath not wrought all this.

28 P oiché sono una nazione che ha perso il senno, e non vi è in essi alcuna intelligenza.

For a nation lost to counsels they, And there is no understanding in them.

29 S e fossero saggi comprenderebbero questo, considererebbero la fine che li aspetta.

If they were wise -- They deal wisely this; They attend to their latter end:

30 C ome potrebbe uno solo inseguirne mille e due metterne in fuga diecimila, se non perché la loro Roccia li ha venduti e l'Eterno li ha consegnati al nemico?

How doth one pursue a thousand, And two cause a myriad to flee! If not -- that their rock hath sold them, And Jehovah hath shut them up?

31 P oiché la loro roccia non è come la nostra Roccia; i nostri stessi nemici ne sono giudici;

For not as our Rock their rock, (And our enemies judges!)

32 m a la loro vite viene dalla vite di Sodoma e dalle campagne di Gomorra; le loro uve sono uve avvelenate e i loro grappoli sono amari;

For of the vine of Sodom their vine, And of the fields of Gomorrah; Their grapes grapes of gall -- They have bitter clusters;

33 i l loro vino è un veleno di serpenti, un veleno crudele di aspidi.

The poison of dragons their wine And the fierce venom of asps.

34 T utto questo non è forse conservato presso di me, sigillato nei miei tesori?

Is it not laid up with Me? Sealed among My treasures?

35 A me appartiene la vendetta e la retribuzione; a suo tempo il loro piede vacillerà! Poiché il giorno della loro calamità è vicino, e le cose preparate per loro si affrettano a venire.

Mine vengeance and recompense, At the due time -- doth their foot slide; For near is a day of their calamity, And haste do things prepared for them.

36 S i, l'Eterno giudicherà il suo popolo, ma avrà compassione dei suoi servi quando vedrà che la loro forza è scomparsa e che non rimane più alcuno, né schiavo né libero.

For Jehovah doth judge His people, And for His servants doth repent Himself. For He seeth -- the going away of power, And none is restrained and left.

37 A llora egli dirà: "Dove sono i loro dèi, la roccia nella quale si rifugiavano,

And He hath said, Where their gods -- The rock in which they trusted;

38 c he mangiavano il grasso dei loro sacrifici bevevano il vino delle loro libazioni? Si levino a soccorrervi e siano il vostro rifugio!".

Which the fat of their sacrifices do eat, They drink the wine of their libation! Let them arise and help you, Let it be for you a hiding-place!

39 O ra vedete che io, io sono Lui, e che non vi è altro DIO accanto a me. Io faccio morire e faccio vivere, ferisco e risano, e non vi è nessuno che possa liberare dalla mia mano.

See ye, now, that I -- I He, And there is no god with Me: I put to death, and I keep alive; I have smitten, and I heal; And there is not from My hand a deliverer,

40 S i, io alzo la mia mano al cielo e dico: lo vivo per sempre

For I lift up unto the heavens My hand, And have said, I live -- to the age!

41 q uando affilerò la mia folgorante spada e la mia mano si preparerà a giudicare, farò vendetta dei miei nemici e ripagherò quelli che mi odiano.

If I have sharpened the brightness of My sword, And My hand doth lay hold on judgment, I turn back vengeance to Mine adversaries, And to those hating Me -- I repay!

42 I nebrierò di sangue le mie frecce e la mia spada divorerà la carne, con il sangue degli uccisi e dei prigionieri, dei capitani chiomati del nemico.

I make drunk Mine arrows with blood, And My sword devoureth flesh, From the blood of the pierced and captive, From the head of the freemen of the enemy.

43 E sultate, o nazioni, con il suo popolo, perché l'Eterno vendica il sangue dei suoi servi, fa vendetta sopra i suoi avversari, ma avrà misericordia della sua terra e del suo popolo».

Sing ye nations -- his people, For the blood of His servants He avengeth, And vengeance He turneth back on His adversaries, And hath pardoned His land -- His people.'

44 C osì Mosè venne con Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e pronunziò tutte e parole di questo cantico agli orecchi del popolo.

And Moses cometh and speaketh all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Hoshea son of Nun;

45 Q uando Mosè ebbe finito di pronunziare tutte queste parole davanti a tutto Israele,

and Moses finisheth to speak all these words unto all Israel,

46 d isse loro: «Prendete a cuore tutte le parole con cui oggi ho testimoniato contro di voi. Le prescriverete ai vostri figli affinché abbiano cura di mettere in pratica tutte le parole di questa legge.

and saith unto them, `Set your heart to all the words which I am testifying against you to-day, that ye command your sons to observe to do all the words of this law,

47 P oiché questa non è una parola senza valore per voi, ma è la vostra vita; e per questa parola prolungherete i vostri giorni nel paese che entrate ad occupare, passando il Giordano».

for it not a vain thing for you, for it your life, and by this thing ye prolong days on the ground whither ye are passing over the Jordan to possess it.'

48 I n quello stesso giorno l'Eterno parlò a Mosè, dicendo:

And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, in this self-same day, saying,

49 « Sali su questo monte degli Abarim, sul monte Nebo, che è nel paese di Moab, sulla sponda opposta a Gerico, e mira il paese di Canaan, che io do in proprietà ai figli d'Israele.

`Go up unto this mount Abarim, mount Nebo, which in the land of Moab, which on the front of Jericho, and see the land of Canaan which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession;

50 T u morrai sul monte su cui stai per salire e sarai riunito al tuo popolo, come Aaronne tuo fratello è morto sul monte di Hor ed è stato riunito al suo popolo,

and die in the mount whither thou art going up, and be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother hath died in the mount Hor, and is gathered unto his people:

51 p erché foste infedeli con me in mezzo ai figli d'Israele, alle acque di Meriba a Kadesh, nel deserto di Tsin, e perché non mi santificaste in mezzo ai figli d'Israele.

`Because ye trespassed against me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribath-Kadesh, the wilderness of Zin -- because ye sanctified Me not in the midst of the sons of Israel;

52 T u vedrai il paese davanti a te, ma là, nel paese che io do ai figli d'Israele, non entrerai».

but over-against thou seest the land, and thither thou dost not go in, unto the land which I am giving to the sons of Israel.'
