1 G li uomini di Efraim dissero a Gedeone: «Perché ti sei comportato in questo modo con noi, non chiamandoci quando sei andato a combattere contro Madian?». Ed ebbero con lui un'aspra contesa.

And the men of Ephraim say unto him, `What this thing thou hast done to us -- not to call for us when thou didst go to fight with Midian?' and they strive with him severely;

2 E gli rispose loro: «Che ho fatto io a vostro confronto? La racimolatura di Efraim non vale forse di piú della vendemmia di Abiezer?

and he saith unto them, `What have I done now like you? are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?

3 D IO vi ha dato nelle mani i principi di Madian, Oreb e Zeeb; che cosa ho potuto fare io a vostro confronto?». Quando disse questo, la loro ira contro di lui si calmò.

Into your hand hath God given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what have I been able to do like you?' Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.

4 G edeone arrivò quindi al Giordano e lo passò con i trecento uomini che erano con lui; benché stanchi, essi continuavano a inseguire il nemico.

And Gideon cometh in unto the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who with him -- wearied, and pursuing,

5 D isse a quelli di Sukkoth: «Date, vi prego, dei pani alla gente che mi segue, perché è stanca, e io sto inseguendo Zebah e Tsalmunna, re di Madian».

and he saith to the men of Succoth, `Give, I pray you, cakes of bread to the people who at my feet, for they wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian.'

6 M a i capi di Sukkoth risposero: «Sono forse Zebah e Tsalmunna già nelle tue mani, perché dobbiamo dare del pane al tuo esercito?».

And the heads of Succoth say, `Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we give to thy host bread?'

7 A llora Gedeone disse: «Per questo quando l'Eterno mi avrà dato nelle mani Zebah e Tsalmunna, lacererò il vostro corpo con le spine del deserto e con i rovi».

And Gideon saith, `Therefore -- in Jehovah's giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand -- I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.'

8 D i là sali a Penuel e parlò a quei di Penuel nello stesso modo; gli uomini di Penuel gli risposero come avevano fatto gli uomini di Sukkoth.

And he goeth up thence Penuel, and speaketh unto them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.

9 C osì egli parlò anche agli uomini di Penuel, dicendo: «Quando tornerò in pace, abbatterò questa torre».

And he speaketh also to the men of Penuel, saying, `In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.'

10 O r Zebah e Tsalmunna erano a Karkor col loro esercito di circa quindicimila uomini, tutto ciò che rimaneva dell'intero esercito dei figli dell'est, poiché centoventimila uomini che brandivano la spada erano stati uccisi.

And Zebah and Zalmunna in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling a hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.

11 G edeone salì per la via di quelli che abitavano in tende, a est di Nobah e di Jogbehah, e sconfisse l'esercito che si credeva al sicuro.

And Gideon goeth up the way of those who tabernacle in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smiteth the camp, and the camp was confident;

12 E Zebah e Tsalmunna si diedero alla fuga; ma egli li inseguì, prese i due re di Madian, Zebah e Tsalmunna, e sbaragliò l'intero esercito.

and Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursueth after them, and captureth the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and all the camp he hath caused to tremble.

13 P oi Gedeone, figlio di Joash, tornò alla battaglia per la salita di Heres.

And Gideon son of Joash turneth back from the battle, at the going up of the sun,

14 C atturò un giovane della gente di Sukkoth e lo interrogò ed egli gli mise per scritto i nomi dei capi e degli anziani di Sukkoth, settantasette uomini.

and captureth a young man of the men of Succoth, and asketh him, and he describeth unto him the heads of Succoth, and its elders -- seventy and seven men.

15 P oi venne dagli uomini di Sukkoth e disse: «Ecco Zebah e Tsalmunna, a proposito dei quali mi avete deriso dicendo: "Sono forse Zebah e Tsalmunna già nelle tue mani, perché dobbiamo dare del pane alla tua gente stanca?"».

And he cometh in unto the men of Succoth, and saith, `Lo Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we give to thy men who wearied bread?'

16 p rese quindi gli anziani della città e con le spine del deserto e con i rovi diede una lezione agli uomini di Sukkoth.

And he taketh the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teacheth by them the men of Succoth,

17 A bbatté pure la torre di Penuel e uccise gli uomini della città.

and the tower of Penuel he hath broken down, and slayeth the men of the city.

18 P oi disse a Zebah e a Tsalmunna: «Come erano gli uomini che avete ucciso al Tabor?». Essi risposero: «Erano come te ognuno di loro aveva l'aspetto di un figlio di re».

And he saith unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, `How -- the men whom ye slew in Tabor?' and they say, `As thou -- so they, one -- as the form of the king's sons.'

19 E gli riprese: «Erano miei fratelli, figli di mia madre; come è vero che l'Eterno vive, se aveste risparmiato la loro vita, io non vi ucciderei!».

And he saith, `My brethren -- sons of my mother -- they; Jehovah liveth, if ye had kept them alive -- I had not slain you.'

20 P oi disse a Jether, suo primogenito: «Levati e uccidili!». Ma il giovane non estrasse la spada, perché aveva paura poiché era ancora giovane.

And he saith to Jether his first-born, `Rise, slay them;' and the young man hath not drawn his sword, for he hath been afraid, for he yet a youth.

21 A llora Zebah e Tsalmunna dissero: «Levati tu stesso e dacci addosso, poiché qual è l'uomo tale è la sua forza». Così Gedeone si levò e uccise Zebah e Tsalmunna, e prese le mezzelune che i loro camelli portavano al collo.

And Zebah saith -- also Zalmunna -- `Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man -- his might;' and Gideon riseth, and slayeth Zebah and Zalmunna, and taketh their round ornaments which on the necks of their camels.

22 A llora gli uomini d'Israele dissero a Gedeone: Regna su di noi tu, tuo figlio e il figlio di tuo figlio, perché ci hai liberati dalla mano di Madian».

And the men of Israel say unto Gideon, `Rule over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, for thou hast saved us from the hand of Midian.'

23 M a Gedeone rispose loro: «Io non regnerò su di voi, e neppure mio figlio regnerà su di voi!».

And Gideon saith unto them, `I do not rule over you, nor doth my son rule over you; Jehovah doth rule over you.'

24 P oi Gedeone disse loro: «Voglio però chiedervi una cosa: ciascuno di voi mi dia gli orecchini del suo bottino». Essi avevano degli orecchini d'oro perché erano Ismaeliti.

And Gideon saith unto them, `Let me ask of you a petition, and give ye to me each the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they Ishmaelites.'

25 E ssi risposero: «Noi li daremo volentieri». Così stesero un mantello e ciascuno vi gettò gli orecchini del suo bottino.

And they say, `We certainly give;' and they spread out the garment, and cast thither each the ring of his prey;

26 I l peso degli orecchini d'oro che egli aveva chiesto fu di millesettecento sicli d'oro oltre le mezzelune, i pendenti e le vesti di porpora che i re di Madian indossavano, e oltre i collari che i loro cammelli avevano al collo.

and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked is a thousand and seven hundred of gold, apart from the round ornaments, and the drops, and the purple garments, which on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which on the necks of their camels,

27 P oi Gedeone ne fece un efod, che pose in Ofrah, sua città; tutto Israele vi andò a prostituirsi con esso, e diventò un laccio per Gedeone e per la sua casa.

and Gideon maketh it into an ephod, and setteth it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go a-whoring after it there, and it is to Gideon and to his house for a snare.

28 C osì Madian fu umiliato davanti ai figli d'Israele e non alzò piú il capo; e il paese ebbe riposo per quarant'anni, durante la vita di Gedeone.

And Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land resteth forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 P oi Jerubbaal, figlio di Joash, tornò a dimorare a casa sua.

And Jerubbaal son of Joash goeth and dwelleth in his own house,

30 O r Gedeone ebbe settanta figli che uscirono dai suoi lombi, perché ebbe molte mogli.

and to Gideon there have been seventy sons, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives;

31 L a sua concubina, che stava a Sichem, gli partorì anch'ella un figlio, a cui pose nome Abimelek.

and his concubine, who in Shechem, hath born to him -- even she -- a son, and he appointeth his name Abimelech.

32 P oi Gedeone, figlio di Joash, morì in buona vecchiaia e fu sepolto nella tomba di Joash suo padre, a Ofrah degli Abiezeriti.

And Gideon son of Joash dieth, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite.

33 D opo la morte di Gedeone i figli d'Israele ricominciarono a prostituirsi ai Baal, e presero Baal-Berith come loro dio.

And it cometh to pass, when Gideon dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go a-whoring after the Baalim, and set over them Baal-Berith for a god;

34 I figli d'Israele non si ricordarono dell'Eterno, il loro DIO, che li aveva liberati dalle mani di tutti i loro nemici tutt'intorno,

and the sons of Israel have not remembered Jehovah their God, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their enemies round about,

35 e non dimostrarono alcuna gratitudine alla casa di Jerubbaal (cioè di Gedeone per tutto il bene che egli aveva fatto a Israele.

neither have they done kindness with the house of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- according to all the good which he did with Israel.
