1 G li uomini di Efraim dissero a Gedeone: «Perché ci hai trattati in questo modo? Perché non ci hai chiamati quando sei andato a combattere contro Madian?» Ebbero con lui una disputa violenta.

And the men of Ephraim say unto him, `What this thing thou hast done to us -- not to call for us when thou didst go to fight with Midian?' and they strive with him severely;

2 E gli rispose loro: «Che ho fatto io in confronto a voi? La racimolatura di Efraim non vale forse più della vendemmia di Abiezer?

and he saith unto them, `What have I done now like you? are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?

3 D io vi ha messo in mano i prìncipi di Madian, Oreb e Zeeb; che dunque ho potuto fare in confronto a voi?» Quand’egli ebbe loro detto quella parola, la loro ira contro di lui si calmò.

Into your hand hath God given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what have I been able to do like you?' Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.

4 G edeone arrivò al Giordano, lo passò con i suoi trecento uomini, i quali, benché stanchi, continuavano a inseguire il nemico,

And Gideon cometh in unto the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who with him -- wearied, and pursuing,

5 e disse a quelli di Succot: «Date, vi prego, dei pani alla gente che mi segue, perché è stanca, e io sto inseguendo Zeba e Salmunna, re di Madian».

and he saith to the men of Succoth, `Give, I pray you, cakes of bread to the people who at my feet, for they wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian.'

6 M a i capi di Succot risposero: «Zeba e Salmunna sono forse già nelle tue mani? Perché dovremmo dare del pane al tuo esercito?»

And the heads of Succoth say, `Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we give to thy host bread?'

7 G edeone disse: «Ebbene! Quando il Signore avrà messo nelle mie mani Zeba e Salmunna, io vi lacererò le carni con delle spine del deserto e con dei rovi».

And Gideon saith, `Therefore -- in Jehovah's giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand -- I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.'

8 D i là salì a Penuel e fece la stessa richiesta a quelli di Penuel, ma essi gli risposero come avevano fatto quelli di Succot.

And he goeth up thence Penuel, and speaketh unto them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.

9 E gli disse anche a quelli di Penuel: «Quando tornerò in pace, abbatterò questa torre».

And he speaketh also to the men of Penuel, saying, `In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.'

10 Z eba e Salmunna erano a Carcor con il loro esercito di circa quindicimila uomini, che era tutto quello che rimaneva dell’intero esercito dei popoli dell’Oriente, poiché centoventimila uomini armati di spada erano stati uccisi.

And Zebah and Zalmunna in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling a hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.

11 G edeone salì per la via dei nomadi, a oriente di Noba e di Iogbea, e sconfisse l’esercito, che si credeva sicuro.

And Gideon goeth up the way of those who tabernacle in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smiteth the camp, and the camp was confident;

12 Z eba e Salmunna si diedero alla fuga; ma egli li inseguì, prese i due re di Madian, Zeba e Salmunna, e sbaragliò tutto l’esercito.

and Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursueth after them, and captureth the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and all the camp he hath caused to tremble.

13 P oi Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, tornò dalla battaglia per la salita di Cheres;

And Gideon son of Joash turneth back from the battle, at the going up of the sun,

14 p rese un giovane di Succot e lo interrogò; e quello gli diede per iscritto i nomi dei capi e degli anziani di Succot, che erano settantasette.

and captureth a young man of the men of Succoth, and asketh him, and he describeth unto him the heads of Succoth, and its elders -- seventy and seven men.

15 P oi Gedeone andò da quelli di Succot e disse: «Ecco Zeba e Salmunna, a proposito dei quali mi insultaste dicendo “Zeba e Salmunna sono forse già nelle tue mani? Perché dovremmo dare del pane alla tua gente esausta?”».

And he cometh in unto the men of Succoth, and saith, `Lo Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we give to thy men who wearied bread?'

16 P oi prese gli anziani della città, e con delle spine del deserto e con dei rovi castigò gli uomini di Succot.

And he taketh the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teacheth by them the men of Succoth,

17 A bbatté la torre di Penuel e uccise la gente della città.

and the tower of Penuel he hath broken down, and slayeth the men of the city.

18 P oi disse a Zeba e a Salmunna: «Com’erano gli uomini che avete ucciso sul Tabor?» Quelli risposero: «Erano come te; ognuno di essi aveva l’aspetto di un figlio di re».

And he saith unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, `How -- the men whom ye slew in Tabor?' and they say, `As thou -- so they, one -- as the form of the king's sons.'

19 E d egli riprese: «Erano miei fratelli, figli di mia madre; com’è vero che il Signore vive, se aveste risparmiato la loro vita, io non vi ucciderei!»

And he saith, `My brethren -- sons of my mother -- they; Jehovah liveth, if ye had kept them alive -- I had not slain you.'

20 P oi disse a Ieter, suo primogenito: «Àlzati, uccidili!» Ma il giovane non estrasse la spada, perché aveva paura, essendo ancora un ragazzo.

And he saith to Jether his first-born, `Rise, slay them;' and the young man hath not drawn his sword, for he hath been afraid, for he yet a youth.

21 Z eba e Salmunna dissero: «Àlzati tu stesso e dacci il colpo mortale; poiché qual è l’uomo tale è la sua forza». Gedeone si alzò, uccise Zeba e Salmunna e prese le mezzelune che i loro cammelli portavano al collo. Gedeone, giudice d’Israele

And Zebah saith -- also Zalmunna -- `Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man -- his might;' and Gideon riseth, and slayeth Zebah and Zalmunna, and taketh their round ornaments which on the necks of their camels.

22 A llora gli uomini d’Israele dissero a Gedeone: «Regna su di noi, tu, tuo figlio e il figlio di tuo figlio, poiché ci hai salvati dalla mano di Madian».

And the men of Israel say unto Gideon, `Rule over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, for thou hast saved us from the hand of Midian.'

23 M a Gedeone rispose loro: «Io non regnerò su di voi, né mio figlio regnerà su di voi; il Signore è colui che regnerà su di voi!»

And Gideon saith unto them, `I do not rule over you, nor doth my son rule over you; Jehovah doth rule over you.'

24 P oi Gedeone disse loro: «Una cosa voglio chiedervi: che ciascuno di voi mi dia gli anelli del suo bottino». – I nemici avevano degli anelli d’oro perché erano Ismaeliti. –

And Gideon saith unto them, `Let me ask of you a petition, and give ye to me each the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they Ishmaelites.'

25 Q uelli risposero: «Li daremo volentieri». E stesero un mantello, sul quale ciascuno gettò gli anelli del suo bottino.

And they say, `We certainly give;' and they spread out the garment, and cast thither each the ring of his prey;

26 I l peso degli anelli d’oro, che egli aveva chiesto, fu di millesettecento sicli d’oro, oltre alle mezzelune, ai pendenti e alle vesti di porpora che i re di Madian avevano addosso, e oltre ai collari che i loro cammelli avevano al collo.

and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked is a thousand and seven hundred of gold, apart from the round ornaments, and the drops, and the purple garments, which on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which on the necks of their camels,

27 G edeone ne fece un efod, che pose in Ofra, sua città, e tutto Israele si prostituì al seguito di quello; ed esso diventò un’insidia per Gedeone e per la sua casa.

and Gideon maketh it into an ephod, and setteth it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go a-whoring after it there, and it is to Gideon and to his house for a snare.

28 C osì Madian fu umiliato davanti ai figli d’Israele e non alzò più il capo; e il paese ebbe pace per quarant’anni, durante la vita di Gedeone.

And Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land resteth forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 I erubbaal, figlio di Ioas, tornò ad abitare a casa sua.

And Jerubbaal son of Joash goeth and dwelleth in his own house,

30 G edeone ebbe settanta figli, che gli nacquero dalle sue molte mogli.

and to Gideon there have been seventy sons, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives;

31 L a sua concubina, che stava a Sichem, gli partorì anche lei un figlio, al quale pose nome Abimelec.

and his concubine, who in Shechem, hath born to him -- even she -- a son, and he appointeth his name Abimelech.

32 P oi Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, morì molto vecchio e fu sepolto nella tomba di Ioas suo padre, a Ofra degli Abiezeriti. Abimelec, re di Sichem

And Gideon son of Joash dieth, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite.

33 D opo la morte di Gedeone, i figli d’Israele ricominciarono a prostituirsi agl’idoli di Baal e presero Baal-Berit come loro dio.

And it cometh to pass, when Gideon dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go a-whoring after the Baalim, and set over them Baal-Berith for a god;

34 I figli d’Israele non si ricordarono del Signore, del loro Dio, che li aveva liberati dalle mani di tutti i nemici che li circondavano;

and the sons of Israel have not remembered Jehovah their God, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their enemies round about,

35 e non dimostrarono nessuna gratitudine alla casa di Ierubbaal, ossia di Gedeone, per tutto il bene che egli aveva fatto a Israele.

neither have they done kindness with the house of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- according to all the good which he did with Israel.
