1 I l re cananeo di Arad, che abitava nella regione meridionale, avendo udito che Israele veniva per la via di Atarim, combattè contro Israele e fece alcuni prigionieri.

And the Canaanite -- king Arad -- dwelling in the south, heareth that Israel hath come the way of the Atharim, and he fighteth against Israel, and taketh of them captive.

2 A llora Israele fece un voto al Signore e disse: «Se tu dai nelle mie mani questo popolo, le loro città saranno da me votate allo sterminio».

And Israel voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost certainly give this people into my hand, then I have devoted their cities;'

3 I l Signore ascoltò la voce d’Israele e gli diede nelle mani i Cananei; Israele votò allo sterminio i Cananei e le loro città e a quel luogo fu messo il nome di Corma.

and Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Israel, and giveth up the Canaanite, and he devoteth them and their cities, and calleth the name of the place Hormah.

4 P oi gli Israeliti partirono dal monte Or, andarono verso il mar Rosso per fare il giro del paese di Edom; durante il viaggio il popolo si perse d’animo.

And they journey from mount Hor, the way of the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom, and the soul of the people is short in the way,

5 I l popolo parlò contro Dio e contro Mosè, e disse: «Perché ci avete fatti salire fuori d’Egitto per farci morire in questo deserto? Poiché qui non c’è né pane né acqua, e siamo nauseati di questo cibo tanto leggero».

and the people speak against God, and against Moses, `Why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to die in a wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water, and our soul hath been weary of this light bread.'

6 A llora il Signore mandò tra il popolo dei serpenti velenosi i quali mordevano la gente, e un gran numero d’Israeliti morì.

And Jehovah sendeth among the people the burning serpents, and they bite the people, and much people of Israel die;

7 I l popolo venne da Mosè e disse: «Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo parlato contro il Signore e contro di te; prega il Signore che allontani da noi questi serpenti». E Mosè pregò per il popolo.

and the people come in unto Moses and say, `We have sinned, for we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, and He doth turn aside from us the serpent;' and Moses prayeth in behalf of the people.

8 I l Signore disse a Mosè: «Fòrgiati un serpente velenoso e mettilo sopra un’asta: chiunque sarà morso, se lo guarderà, resterà in vita».

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Make for thee a burning, and set it on an ensign; and it hath been, every one who is bitten and hath seen it -- he hath lived.

9 M osè allora fece un serpente di bronzo e lo mise sopra un’asta; e avveniva che, quando un serpente mordeva qualcuno, se questi guardava il serpente di bronzo, restava in vita.

And Moses maketh a serpent of brass, and setteth it on the ensign, and it hath been, if the serpent hath bitten any man, and he hath looked expectingly unto the serpent of brass -- he hath lived.

10 P oi i figli d’Israele partirono e si accamparono a Obot;

And the sons of Israel journey, and encamp in Oboth.

11 e , dopo essere partiti da Obot, si accamparono a Iie-Abarim nel deserto che è di fronte a Moab dal lato dove sorge il sole.

And they journey from Oboth, and encamp in Ije-Abarim, in the wilderness that on the front of Moab, at the rising of the sun.

12 D i là partirono e si accamparono nella valle di Zered.

From thence they have journeyed, and encamp in the valley of Zared.

13 P oi partirono di là e si accamparono dall’altro lato dell’Arnon, che scorre nel deserto e nasce sul territorio degli Amorei; poiché l’Arnon è il confine di Moab, tra Moab e gli Amorei.

From thence they have journeyed, and encamp beyond Arnon, which in the wilderness which is coming out of the border of the Amorite, for Arnon the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorite;

14 P er questo è detto nel libro delle guerre del Signore: «Vaeb in Sufa e gli affluenti dell’Arnon

therefore it is said in a book, `The wars of Jehovah,' -- `Waheb in Suphah, And the brooks of Arnon;

15 e i letti dei torrenti che scendono verso le dimore di Ar e si appoggiano alla frontiera di Moab».

And the spring of the brooks, Which turned aside to the dwelling of Ar, And hath leaned to the border of Moab.'

16 D i là andarono a Beer, che è il pozzo a proposito del quale il Signore disse a Mosè: «Raduna il popolo e io gli darò l’acqua».

And from thence to Beer; it the well which Jehovah said to Moses, `Gather the people, and I give to them -- water.'

17 F u in quell’occasione che Israele cantò questo cantico: «Scaturisci, o pozzo! Salutatelo con canti!

Then singeth Israel this song, concerning the well -- they have answered to it:

18 P ozzo che i capi hanno scavato, che i nobili del popolo hanno aperto con lo scettro, con i loro bastoni!»

`A well -- digged it have princes, Prepared it have nobles of the people, With the lawgiver, with their staves.' And from the wilderness to Mattanah,

19 P oi dal deserto andarono a Mattana; da Mattana a Naaliel; da Naaliel a Bamot,

and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

20 e da Bamot nella valle che è nella campagna di Moab, verso l’altura del Pisga che domina il deserto. Conquista dei due regni amorei

and from Bamoth in the valley which in the field of Moab the top of Pisgah, which hath looked on the front of the wilderness.

21 I sraele mandò ambasciatori a Sicon, re degli Amorei, per dirgli:

And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorite, saying,

22 « Lasciami passare per il tuo paese; noi non ci svieremo per i campi né per le vigne, non berremo l’acqua dei pozzi; seguiremo la strada pubblica finché abbiamo oltrepassato i tuoi confini».

`Let me pass through thy land, we do not turn aside into a field, or into a vineyard, we do not drink waters of a well; in the king's way we go, till that we pass over thy border.'

23 M a Sicon non permise a Israele di passare per il suo territorio; anzi radunò tutta la sua gente e uscì fuori contro Israele nel deserto; giunse a Iaas e affrontò Israele.

And Sihon hath not suffered Israel to pass through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and cometh out to meet Israel into the wilderness, and cometh in to Jahaz, and fighteth against Israel.

24 I sraele lo sconfisse passandolo a fil di spada, e conquistò il suo paese dall’Arnon fino al Iabboc, fino ai confini degli Ammoniti, poiché la frontiera degli Ammoniti era forte.

And Israel smiteth him by the mouth of the sword, and possesseth his land from Arnon unto Jabbok -- unto the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon strong.

25 I sraele prese tutte queste città e abitò in tutte le città degli Amorei: a Chesbon e in tutte le città del suo territorio;

And Israel taketh all these cities, and Israel dwelleth in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon, and in all its villages;

26 p oiché Chesbon era la città di Sicon, re degli Amorei, il quale aveva mosso guerra al precedente re di Moab e gli aveva tolto tutto il suo paese fino all’Arnon.

for Heshbon is a city of Sihon king of the Amorite, and he hath fought against the former king of Moab, and taketh all his land out of his hand, unto Arnon;

27 P er questo dicono i poeti: «Venite a Chesbon! La città di Sicon sia ricostruita e fortificata!

therefore those using similes say -- `Enter ye Heshbon, Let the city of Sihon be built and ready,

28 P oiché un fuoco è uscito da Chesbon, una fiamma dalla città di Sicon; essa ha divorato Ar di Moab,

For fire hath gone out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon, It hath consumed Ar of Moab, Owners of the high places of Arnon.

29 i dominatori delle alture dell’Arnon. Guai a te, Moab! Sei perduto, o popolo di Chemos! Chemos ha fatto dei suoi figli tanti fuggiaschi e ha dato le sue figlie come schiave a Sicon, re degli Amorei.

Wo to thee, O Moab, Thou hast perished, O people of Chemosh, He hath given his sons who escape -- Also his daughters -- Into captivity, to a king of the Amorite -- Sihon!

30 N oi abbiamo scagliato su di loro le nostre frecce; Chesbon è distrutta fino a Dibon. Abbiamo tutto devastato fino a Nofa, il fuoco è giunto fino a Medeba».

And we shoot them, Perished hath Heshbon unto Dibon, And we make desolate unto Nophah, Which unto Medeba.'

31 C osì Israele si stabilì nel paese degli Amorei.

And Israel dwelleth in the land of the Amorite,

32 P oi Mosè mandò a esplorare Iaezer, e gl’Israeliti presero le città del suo territorio e ne scacciarono gli Amorei che vi si trovavano.

and Moses sendeth to spy out Jaazer, and they capture its villages, and dispossess the Amorite who there,

33 M utata direzione, risalirono il paese in direzione di Basan; e Og, re di Basan, uscì contro di loro con tutta la sua gente per dar loro battaglia a Edrei.

and turn and go up the way of Bashan, and Og king of Bashan cometh out to meet them, he and all his people, to battle, Edrei.

34 M a il Signore disse a Mosè: «Non lo temere, poiché io lo do nelle tue mani: lui, tutta la gente e il suo paese; trattalo come hai trattato Sicon, re degli Amorei che abitava a Chesbon».

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Fear him not, for into thy hand I have given him, and all his people, and his land, and thou hast done to him as thou hast done to Sihon king of the Amorite, who is dwelling in Heshbon.'

35 E gli Israeliti sconfissero lui, con i suoi figli e con tutto il suo popolo, finché non ne rimase in vita neppure uno; e si impadronirono del suo paese.

And they smite him, and his sons, and all his people, until he hath not left to him a remnant, and they possess his land.
