1 A l tempo di Assuero, di quell’Assuero che regnava dall’India fino all’Etiopia su centoventisette province,

And it cometh to pass, in the days of Ahasuerus -- he Ahasuerus who is reigning from Hodu even unto Cush, seven and twenty and a hundred provinces --

2 i n quel tempo, mentre il re Assuero sedeva sul trono del suo regno a Susa, la residenza reale,

in those days, at the sitting of the king Ahasuerus on the throne of his kingdom, that in Shushan the palace,

3 n el terzo anno del suo regno, fece un convito per tutti i suoi prìncipi e i suoi servi. Riunì l’esercito di Persia e di Media, i nobili e i governatori delle province

in the third year of his reign, he hath made a banquet to all his heads and his servants; of the force of Persia and Media, the chiefs and heads of the provinces before him,

4 e per molti giorni, per centottanta giorni, mostrò le ricchezze e la gloria del suo regno e il fasto magnifico della sua grandezza.

in his shewing the wealth of the honour of his kingdom, and the glory of the beauty of his greatness, many days -- eighty and a hundred days.

5 Q uando questi giorni furono trascorsi, il re fece un altro convito di sette giorni, nel cortile del giardino della reggia, per tutti quelli, dal più grande al più piccolo, che si trovavano a Susa, residenza reale.

And at the fulness of these days hath the king made to all the people who are found in Shushan the palace, from great even unto small, a banquet, seven days, in the court of the garden of the house of the king --

6 A razzi di cotone finissimo, bianchi e viola, stavano sospesi, mediante cordoni di bisso e di porpora, ad anelli d’argento e a colonne di marmo. C’erano divani d’oro e d’argento sopra un pavimento di porfido, di marmo bianco, di madreperla e di pietre nere.

white linen, white cotton, and blue, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple on rings of silver, and pillars of marble, couches of gold, and of silver, on a pavement of smaragdus, and white marble, and mother-of-pearl, and black marble --

7 S i offriva da bere in vasi d’oro di svariate forme, e il vino alla corte era abbondante, grazie alla liberalità del re.

and the giving of drink in vessels of gold, and the vessels divers vessels, and the royal wine abundant, as a memorial of the king.

8 P er ordine del re nessuno doveva essere forzato a bere; infatti il re aveva ordinato a tutti i nobili della sua casa di lasciar fare a ciascuno secondo la propria volontà.

And the drinking according to law, none is pressing, for so hath the king appointed for every chief one of his house, to do according to the pleasure of man and man.

9 A nche la regina Vasti fece un convito per le donne nella reggia del re Assuero. Disubbidienza e ripudio della regina

Also Vashti the queen hath made a banquet for women, in the royal house that the king Ahasuerus hath.

10 I l settimo giorno, il re, che aveva il cuore reso allegro dal vino, ordinò a Meuman, a Bizta, a Carbona, a Bigta, ad Abagta, a Zetar e a Carcas, i sette eunuchi che servivano in presenza del re Assuero,

On the seventh day, as the heart of the king is glad with wine, he hath said to Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven eunuchs who are ministering in the presence of the king Ahasuerus,

11 c he conducessero davanti a lui la regina Vasti con la corona reale, per far vedere al popolo e ai nobili la sua bellezza; perché era bella d’aspetto.

to bring in Vashti the queen before the king, with a royal crown, to shew the peoples and the heads her beauty, for she of good appearance,

12 M a quando gli eunuchi riferirono l’ordine del re alla regina Vasti, lei rifiutò di venire. Il re ne fu irritatissimo, e l’ira divampò in lui.

and the queen Vashti refuseth to come in at the word of the king that by the hand of the eunuchs, and the king is very wroth, and his fury hath burned in him.

13 A llora il re interrogò i saggi che avevano la conoscenza dei tempi, poiché gli affari del re si trattavano così in presenza di quanti conoscevano la legge e il diritto.

And the king saith to wise men, knowing the times -- for so the word of the king before all knowing law and judgment,

14 I più vicini a lui erano Carsena, Setar, Admata, Tarsis, Meres, Marsena e Memucan, sette prìncipi di Persia e di Media che vedevano la faccia del re e occupavano i primi posti nel regno.

and he who is near unto him Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, Memucan, seven heads of Persia and Media seeing the face of the king, who are sitting first in the kingdom --

15 I l re chiese: «In base alla legge, che cosa si deve fare alla regina Vasti che non ha voluto eseguire l’ordine datole dal re Assuero per mezzo degli eunuchi?»

`According to law, what -- to do with queen Vashti, because that she hath not done the saying of the king Ahasuerus by the hand of the eunuchs?'

16 M emucan rispose in presenza del re e dei prìncipi: «La regina Vasti ha mancato non solo verso il re, ma anche verso tutti i prìncipi e tutti i popoli che sono in tutte le province del re Assuero.

And Memucan saith before the king and the heads, `Not against the king by himself hath Vashti the queen done perversely, but against all the heads, and against all the peoples that in all provinces of the king Ahasuerus;

17 I nfatti quello che la regina ha fatto lo verranno a sapere tutte le donne e ciò le spingerà a disprezzare i loro mariti; poiché esse diranno: “Il re Assuero aveva ordinato che si conducesse in sua presenza la regina Vasti, ma lei non è andata”.

for go forth doth the word of the queen unto all the women, to render their husbands contemptible in their eyes, in their saying, The king Ahasuerus said to bring in Vashti the queen before him, and she did not come;

18 D a ora in avanti le principesse di Persia e di Media, che avranno udito il fatto della regina, ne parleranno a tutti i prìncipi del re e ne risulteranno grande disprezzo e molto sdegno.

yea, this day do princesses of Persia and Media, who have heard the word of the queen, say to all heads of the king, even according to the sufficiency of contempt and wrath.

19 S e il re è d’accordo, emani un decreto reale, lo faccia iscrivere tra le leggi di Persia e di Media in modo che sia irrevocabile, per il quale Vasti non possa più comparire in presenza del re Assuero, e il re conferisca la dignità reale a una sua compagna migliore di lei.

`If to the king good, there goeth forth a royal word from before him, and it is written with the laws of Persia and Media, and doth not pass away, that Vashti doth not come in before the king Ahasuerus, and her royalty doth the king give to her companion who better than she;

20 Q uando il decreto emanato dal re sarà conosciuto nell’intero suo regno, che è vasto, tutte le donne renderanno onore ai loro mariti, dal più grande al più piccolo».

and the sentence of the king that he maketh hath been heard in all his kingdom -- for it great -- and all the wives give honour to their husbands, from great even unto small.'

21 L a cosa piacque al re e ai prìncipi, e il re fece come aveva detto Memucan.

And the thing is good in the eyes of the king, and of the princes, and the king doth according to the word of Memucan,

22 C osì mandò lettere a tutte le province del regno, a ogni provincia secondo il suo modo di scrivere e a ogni popolo secondo la sua lingua, perché ogni uomo fosse padrone in casa sua e potesse parlare secondo il modo di esprimersi del suo popolo.

and sendeth letters unto all provinces of the king, unto province and province according to its writing, and unto people and people according to its tongue, for every man being head in his own house -- and speaking according to the language of his people.
