1 Q uanto poi ai tempi e ai momenti, fratelli, non avete bisogno che ve ne scriva;

And concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need of my writing to you,

2 p erché voi stessi sapete molto bene che il giorno del Signore verrà come viene un ladro nella notte.

for yourselves have known thoroughly that the day of the Lord as a thief in the night doth so come,

3 Q uando diranno: «Pace e sicurezza», allora una rovina improvvisa verrà loro addosso, come le doglie alla donna incinta; e non scamperanno.

for when they may say, Peace and surety, then sudden destruction doth stand by them, as the travail her who is with child, and they shall not escape;

4 M a voi, fratelli, non siete nelle tenebre, così che quel giorno abbia a sorprendervi come un ladro;

and ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day may catch you as a thief;

5 p erché voi tutti siete figli di luce e figli del giorno; noi non siamo della notte né delle tenebre.

all ye are sons of light, and sons of day; we are not of night, nor of darkness,

6 N on dormiamo dunque come gli altri, ma vegliamo e siamo sobri;

so, then, we may not sleep as also the others, but watch and be sober,

7 p oiché quelli che dormono, dormono di notte, e quelli che si ubriacano, lo fanno di notte.

for those sleeping, by night do sleep, and those making themselves drunk, by night are drunken,

8 M a noi, che siamo del giorno, siamo sobri, avendo rivestito la corazza della fede e dell’amore e preso per elmo la speranza della salvezza.

and we, being of the day -- let us be sober, putting on a breastplate of faith and love, and an helmet -- a hope of salvation,

9 D io infatti non ci ha destinati a ira, ma ad ottenere salvezza per mezzo del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo,

because God did not appoint us to anger, but to the acquiring of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 i l quale è morto per noi affinché, sia che vegliamo sia che dormiamo, viviamo insieme con lui.

who did die for us, that whether we wake -- whether we sleep -- together with him we may live;

11 P erciò, consolatevi a vicenda ed edificatevi gli uni gli altri, come d’altronde già fate. Ultime raccomandazioni

wherefore, comfort ye one another, and build ye up, one the one, as also ye do.

12 F ratelli, vi preghiamo di avere riguardo per coloro che faticano in mezzo a voi, che vi sono preposti nel Signore e vi istruiscono,

And we ask you, brethren, to know those labouring among you, and leading you in the Lord, and admonishing you,

13 e di tenerli in grande stima e di amarli a motivo della loro opera. Vivete in pace tra di voi.

and to esteem them very abundantly in love, because of their work; be at peace among yourselves;

14 V i esortiamo, fratelli, ad ammonire i disordinati, a confortare gli scoraggiati, a sostenere i deboli, a essere pazienti con tutti.

and we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, comfort the feeble-minded, support the infirm, be patient unto all;

15 G uardate che nessuno renda ad alcuno male per male; anzi cercate sempre il bene gli uni degli altri e quello di tutti.

see no one evil for evil may render to any one, but always that which is good pursue ye, both to one another and to all;

16 S iate sempre gioiosi;

always rejoice ye;

17 n on cessate mai di pregare;

continually pray ye;

18 i n ogni cosa rendete grazie, perché questa è la volontà di Dio in Cristo Gesù verso di voi.

in every thing give thanks, for this the will of God in Christ Jesus in regard to you.

19 N on spegnete lo Spirito.

The Spirit quench not;

20 N on disprezzate le profezie,

prophesyings despise not;

21 m a esaminate ogni cosa e ritenete il bene;

all things prove; that which is good hold fast;

22 a stenetevi da ogni specie di male.

from all appearance of evil abstain ye;

23 O r il Dio della pace vi santifichi egli stesso completamente; e l’intero essere vostro, lo spirito, l’anima e il corpo, sia conservato irreprensibile per la venuta del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.

and the God of the peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your whole spirit, and soul, and body, be preserved unblameably in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ;

24 F edele è colui che vi chiama, ed egli farà anche questo.

stedfast is He who is calling you, who also will do.

25 F ratelli, pregate per noi.

Brethren, pray for us;

26 S alutate tutti i fratelli con un santo bacio.

salute all the brethren in an holy kiss;

27 I o vi scongiuro per il Signore che si legga questa lettera a tutti i fratelli.

I charge you the Lord, that the letter be read to all the holy brethren;

28 L a grazia del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo sia con voi.

the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ with you! Amen.
