1 E cco la parola che fu rivolta a Geremia da parte del Signore:

The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying:

2 « Ascoltate le parole di questo patto e parlate agli uomini di Giuda e agli abitanti di Gerusalemme!

`Hear ye the words of this covenant, and ye have spoken unto the men of Judah, and unto the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

3 D i’ loro: “Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: Maledetto l’uomo che non ascolta le parole di questo patto,

and thou hast said unto them, Thus said Jehovah God of Israel: Cursed the man who doth not obey the words of this covenant,

4 c he io comandai ai vostri padri il giorno che li feci uscire dal paese d’Egitto, dalla fornace di ferro, dicendo: ‘Ascoltate la mia voce e fate tutto quello che vi comanderò; voi sarete mio popolo e io sarò vostro Dio,

That I commanded your fathers, In the day of My bringing them out from the land of Egypt, Out of the iron furnace, saying, Hearken to My voice, and ye have done them, According to all that I command you, And ye have been to Me for a people, And I am to you for God,

5 a ffinché io possa mantenere il giuramento che feci ai vostri padri, di dar loro un paese dove scorre il latte e il miele’, come oggi si vede”». Allora io risposi: «Amen, Signore!»

In order to establish the oath that I have sworn to your fathers, To give to them a land flowing with milk and honey, as this day. And I answer and say, `Amen, O Jehovah.'

6 I l Signore mi disse: «Proclama tutte queste parole nelle città di Giuda e per le strade di Gerusalemme, dicendo: “Ascoltate le parole di questo patto e mettetele in pratica!

And Jehovah saith unto me, `Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying: Hear ye the words of this covenant, And ye have done them.

7 I o infatti ho scongiurato i vostri padri dal giorno che li feci uscire dal paese d’Egitto fino a questo giorno, li ho scongiurati fin dal mattino, dicendo: ‘Ascoltate la mia voce!’

For I certainly testified against your fathers, In the day of My bringing them up out of the land of Egypt -- till this day, Rising early and testifying, saying, Hearken to My voice,

8 M a essi non l’hanno ascoltata, non hanno prestato orecchio e hanno camminato seguendo ciascuno la caparbietà del loro cuore malvagio; perciò io ho fatto venire su di loro tutto quello che avevo detto in quel patto che io avevo comandato loro di osservare, e che essi non hanno osservato”».

And they have not hearkened nor inclined their ear, And they walk each in the stubbornness of their evil heart, And I bring on them all the words of this covenant, That I commanded to do, and they did not.'

9 P oi il Signore mi disse: «Esiste una congiura tra gli uomini di Giuda e fra gli abitanti di Gerusalemme.

And Jehovah saith unto me: `A conspiracy is found in the men of Judah, And in the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

10 S ono tornati alle iniquità dei loro padri antichi, i quali rifiutarono di ascoltare le mie parole; sono andati anch’essi dietro ad altri dèi, per servirli. La casa d’Israele e la casa di Giuda hanno rotto il patto che io avevo fatto con i loro padri.

They have turned back to the iniquities of their first fathers, Who refused to hear My words, And they have gone after other gods to serve them, The house of Israel, and the house of Judah, Have made void My covenant, that I made with their fathers.

11 P erciò così parla il Signore: “Ecco, io faccio venire su di loro una calamità, alla quale non potranno sfuggire. Essi grideranno a me, ma io non li ascolterò.

Therefore thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am bringing in unto them evil, That they are not able to go out from, And they have cried unto Me, And I do not hearken unto them.

12 A llora le città di Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme andranno a gridare agli dèi a cui offrono profumi; ma essi non li salveranno nel tempo della calamità!

And the cities of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem have gone, And they have cried unto the gods, To whom they are making perfume, And they give no deliverance at all to them, In the time of their vexation.

13 I nfatti, o Giuda, tu hai tanti dèi quante sono le tue città; e quante sono le strade di Gerusalemme, tanti sono gli altari che avete eretti alla vergogna, altari per offrire profumi a Baal”.

For -- the number of thy cities have been thy gods, O Judah, And -- the number of the streets of Jerusalem Ye have placed altars to a shameful thing, Altars to make perfume to Baal.

14 T u non pregare per questo popolo, non ti mettere a gridare né a fare suppliche per loro; perché io non li esaudirò quando grideranno a me a causa della calamità che li avrà colpiti.

And thou, thou dost not pray for this people, Nor dost thou lift up for them cry and prayer, For I do not hearken in the time of their calling unto Me for their vexation.

15 “ Che ha da fare l’amato mio nella mia casa, quando vi si commettono molte scelleratezze? Forse che della carne consacrata allontanerà da te la calamità, perché tu possa rallegrarti?”».

What -- to My beloved in My house, Her doing wickedness with many, And the holy flesh do pass over from thee? When thou dost evil, then thou exultest.

16 I l Signore ti aveva chiamato Ulivo verdeggiante, adorno di bei frutti. Al rumore di un gran tumulto egli vi appicca il fuoco, e i rami ne sono danneggiati.

`An olive, green, fair, of goodly fruit,' Hath Jehovah called thy name, At the noise of a great tumult He hath kindled fire against it, And broken have been its thin branches.

17 I l Signore degli eserciti che ti aveva piantato pronuncia del male contro di te, a causa della malvagità commessa a loro danno dalla casa d’Israele e dalla casa di Giuda, quando hanno provocato la mia ira offrendo profumi a Baal. Congiura contro Geremia

And Jehovah of Hosts, who is planting thee, Hath spoken evil concerning thee, For the evil of the house of Israel, and of the house of Judah, That they have done to themselves, To provoke Me to anger, to make perfume to Baal.

18 I l Signore me l’ha fatto sapere, e io l’ho saputo; allora tu mi hai mostrato le loro azioni.

And, O Jehovah, cause me to know, and I know, Then Thou hast showed me their doings.

19 I o ero come un docile agnello che si conduce al macello; io non sapevo che tramavano macchinazioni contro di me, dicendo: «Distruggiamo l’albero con il suo frutto, sterminiamolo dalla terra dei viventi, affinché il suo nome non sia più ricordato».

And I as a trained lamb brought to slaughter, And I have not known That against me they have devised devices: We destroy the tree with its food, and cut him off From the land of the living, And his name is not remembered again.

20 M a, o Signore degli eserciti, giusto giudice, che scruti le reni e il cuore, io vedrò la tua vendetta su di loro, poiché a te io rimetto la mia causa.

And O Jehovah of Hosts, judging righteousness, Trying reins and heart, I do see Thy vengeance against them, For unto Thee I have revealed my cause.'

21 P erciò così parla il Signore riguardo a quelli di Anatot che cercano la tua vita e dicono: «Non profetizzare nel nome del Signore, se non vuoi morire per mano nostra».

Therefore, thus said Jehovah concerning the men of Anathoth, who are seeking thy life, saying: Do not prophesy in the name of Jehovah, And thou dost not die by our hands.

22 P erciò così parla il Signore degli eserciti: «Ecco, io sto per punirli; i giovani moriranno per la spada, i loro figli e le loro figlie moriranno di fame.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah of Hosts: `Lo, I am seeing after them, The chosen ones die by sword, Their sons and their daughters die by famine,

23 N on resterà di loro nessun residuo, poiché io farò venire la calamità su quelli di Anatot, l’anno in cui li visiterò».

And they have no remnant, For I bring evil unto the men of Anathoth, The year of their inspection!'
