1 Q ueste sono le parole della lettera che il profeta Geremia mandò da Gerusalemme al residuo degli anziani esiliati, ai sacerdoti, ai profeti e a tutto il popolo che Nabucodonosor aveva deportato da Gerusalemme a Babilonia,

And these words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the remnant of the elders of the removal, and unto the priests, and unto the prophets, and unto all the people -- whom Nebuchadnezzar removed from Jerusalem to Babylon,

2 d opo che il re Ieconia, la regina, gli eunuchi, i prìncipi di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, i falegnami e i fabbri furono usciti da Gerusalemme.

After the going forth of Jeconiah the king, and the mistress, and the officers, heads of Judah and Jerusalem, and the artificer, and the smith, from Jerusalem --

3 L a lettera fu portata per mano di Elasa, figlio di Safan, e di Ghemaria, figlio di Chilchia, che Sedechia, re di Giuda, mandava a Babilonia da Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia. Essa diceva:

By the hand of Eleasah son of Shaphan, and Gemariah son of Hilkijah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon -- to Babylon, saying,

4 « Così parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele, a tutti i deportati che io ho fatto condurre da Gerusalemme a Babilonia:

`Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, to all the removal that I removed from Jerusalem to Babylon,

5 “ Costruite case e abitatele; piantate giardini e mangiatene il frutto;

Build ye houses, and abide; and plant ye gardens, and eat their fruit;

6 p rendete mogli e generate figli e figlie; prendete mogli per i vostri figli, date marito alle vostre figlie perché facciano figli e figlie; moltiplicate là dove siete e non diminuite.

Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take for your sons wives, and your daughters give to husbands, and they bear sons and daughters; and multiply there, and ye are not few;

7 C ercate il bene della città dove io vi ho fatti deportare e pregate il Signore per essa; poiché dal bene di questa dipende il vostro bene”.

And seek the peace of the city whither I have removed you, and pray for it unto Jehovah, for in its peace ye have peace.

8 I nfatti così dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: “I vostri profeti, che sono in mezzo a voi, e i vostri indovini non v’ingannino e non date retta ai sogni che fate.

`For thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, Let not your prophets who in your midst, and your diviners, lift you up, nor hearken ye unto their dreams, thay ye are causing to dream;

9 P oiché quelli vi profetizzano falsamente nel mio nome; io non li ho mandati”, dice il Signore.

For with falsehood they are prophesying to you in My name; I have not sent them, an affirmation of Jehovah.

10 P oiché così parla il Signore: “Quando settant’anni saranno compiuti per Babilonia, io vi visiterò e manderò a effetto per voi la mia buona parola facendovi tornare in questo luogo.

`For thus said Jehovah, Surely at the fulness of Babylon -- seventy years -- I inspect you, and have established towards you My good word, to bring you back unto this place.

11 I nfatti io so i pensieri che medito per voi”, dice il Signore, “pensieri di pace e non di male, per darvi un avvenire e una speranza.

For I have known the thoughts that I am thinking towards you -- an affirmation of Jehovah; thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give to you posterity and hope.

12 V oi m’invocherete, verrete a pregarmi e io vi esaudirò.

`And ye have called Me, and have gone, and have prayed unto Me, and I have hearkened unto you,

13 V oi mi cercherete e mi troverete, perché mi cercherete con tutto il vostro cuore;

And ye have sought Me, and have found, for ye seek Me with all your heart;

14 i o mi lascerò trovare da voi”, dice il Signore. “Vi farò tornare dalla vostra prigionia e vi raccoglierò da tutte le nazioni e da tutti i luoghi dove vi ho cacciati”, dice il Signore; “vi ricondurrò nel luogo da cui vi ho fatti deportare”.

And I have been found of you -- an affirmation of Jehovah; and I have turned back your captivity, and have gathered you out of all the nations, and out of all the places whither I have driven you -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- and I have brought you back unto the place whence I removed you.

15 « Voi dite: “Il Signore ci ha suscitato dei profeti in Babilonia”.

`Because ye have said, Jehovah hath raised up to us prophets in Babylon,

16 E bbene, così parla il Signore riguardo al re che siede sul trono di Davide, riguardo a tutto il popolo che abita in questa città, ai vostri fratelli che non sono stati deportati con voi;

Surely thus said Jehovah concerning the king who is sitting on the throne of David, and concerning all the people that is dwelling in this city, your brethren who went not forth with you in the removal;

17 c osì parla il Signore degli eserciti: “Ecco, io manderò contro di loro la spada, la fame, la peste, e li renderò come quegli orribili fichi che non si possono mangiare, tanto sono cattivi.

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, Lo, I am sending among them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and I have given them up as figs that vile, that are not eaten for badness.

18 L i inseguirò con la spada, con la fame, con la peste; farò in modo che siano agitati fra tutti i regni della terra e li abbandonerò all’esecrazione, allo stupore, alla derisione e al vituperio fra tutte le nazioni dove li scaccerò,

And I have pursued after them with sword, with famine, and with pestilence, and have given them for a trembling to all kingdoms of the earth, for a curse and for an astonishment, and for a hissing, and for a reproach among all the nations whither I have driven them,

19 p erché non hanno dato ascolto alle mie parole”, dice il Signore, “che io ho mandate loro a dire dai miei servitori i profeti, continuamente, fin dal mattino; ma essi non hanno dato ascolto”, dice il Signore.

Because that they have not hearkened unto My words -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- that I sent unto them by My servants the prophets, rising early and sending, and ye hearkened not -- an affirmation of Jehovah.

20 « Ascoltate dunque la parola del Signore, voi tutti che ho fatto deportare da Gerusalemme a Babilonia!

`And ye, hear ye a word of Jehovah, all ye of the captivity that I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon,

21 C osì parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele, riguardo ad Acab, figlio di Colaia, e riguardo a Sedechia, figlio di Maaseia, che vi profetizzano la menzogna nel mio nome: “Ecco, io do costoro in mano a Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, ed egli li metterà a morte davanti ai vostri occhi.

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, concerning Ahab son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying to you in My name falsehood: Lo, I am giving them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he hath smitten them before your eyes,

22 D a essi si trarrà una formula di maledizione fra tutti quelli di Giuda che sono deportati a Babilonia, e si dirà: ‘Il Signore ti tratti come Sedechia e come Acab, che il re di Babilonia ha fatti arrostire al fuoco!’

And taken from them hath been a reviling by all the removed of Judah that in Babylon, saying, Jehovah doth set thee as Zedekiah, and as Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted with fire;

23 C ostoro infatti hanno compiuto cose nefande in Israele, hanno commesso adulterio con le mogli del loro prossimo e hanno pronunciato in mio nome parole di menzogna, il che io non avevo loro comandato. Io stesso lo so e ne sono testimone”, dice il Signore ».

Because that they have done folly in Israel, and commit adultery with the wives of their neighbours, and speak a word in My name falsely that I have not commanded them, and I He who knoweth and a witness -- an affirmation of Jehovah.

24 « Quanto a Semaia, il Neelamita, gli parlerai in questo modo:

`And unto Shemaiah the Nehelamite thou dost speak, saying,

25 C osì dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: “Tu hai mandato in tuo nome una lettera a tutto il popolo residente a Gerusalemme, a Sofonia, figlio di Maaseia il sacerdote, e a tutti i sacerdoti, per dire:

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, saying, Because that thou hast sent in thy name letters unto all the people who in Jerusalem, and unto Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest, and unto all the priests, saying,

26 ‘ Il Signore ti ha costituito sacerdote al posto del sacerdote Ieoiada, perché vi siano nella casa del Signore dei sovrintendenti per sorvegliare ogni uomo che è pazzo e che fa il profeta, e perché tu lo incateni e lo metta nei ceppi.

Jehovah hath made thee priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, for there being inspectors of the house of Jehovah, for every one mad and making himself a prophet, and thou hast put him unto the torture and unto the stocks.

27 O ra perché non tieni a freno Geremia di Anatot, che fa il profeta in mezzo a voi?

And now, why hast thou not pushed against Jeremiah of Anathoth, who is making himself a prophet to you?

28 E gli ci ha perfino mandato a dire a Babilonia: L’esilio sarà lungo; costruitevi case e abitatele; piantate giardini e mangiatene il frutto’”».

Because that he hath sent unto us to Babylon, saying, It long, build ye houses, and abide; and plant ye gardens, and eat their fruit.'

29 I l sacerdote Sofonia lesse questa lettera in presenza del profeta Geremia.

And Zephaniah the priest readeth this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

30 L a parola del Signore fu rivolta a Geremia, dicendo:

And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah, saying,

31 « Manda a dire a tutti quelli che sono deportati: “Così parla il Signore riguardo a Semaia il Neelamita: ‘Poiché Semaia vi ha profetizzato, sebbene io non l’abbia mandato, e vi ha fatto confidare nella menzogna,

`Send unto all the removal, saying, Thus said Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite, Because that Shemaiah prophesied to you, and I -- I have not sent him, and he doth cause you to trust on falsehood,

32 c osì parla il Signore: Ecco, io punirò Semaia, il Neelamita, e la sua discendenza; non ci sarà nessuno dei suoi discendenti che abiti in mezzo a questo popolo ed egli non vedrà il bene che io farò al mio popolo’, dice il Signore, ‘poiché egli ha parlato di ribellione contro il Signore ’”».

Therefore, thus said Jehovah, Lo, I am seeing after Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and after his seed, he hath none dwelling in the midst of this people, nor doth he look on the good that I am doing to My people -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- for apostacy he hath spoken against Jehovah.'
