1 « Io vi ho detto queste cose affinché non siate sviati.

`These things I have spoken to you, that ye may not be stumbled,

2 V i espelleranno dalle sinagoghe; anzi, l’ora viene che chiunque vi ucciderà, crederà di rendere un culto a Dio.

out of the synagogues they will put you; but an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God;

3 F aranno questo perché non hanno conosciuto né il Padre né me.

and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me.

4 M a io vi ho detto queste cose affinché, quando sia giunta l’ora, vi ricordiate che ve le ho dette. Non ve le dissi da principio perché ero con voi. Lo Spirito agisce nel mondo e nei discepoli

`But these things I have spoken to you, that when the hour may come, ye may remember them, that I said to you, and these things to you from the beginning I did not say, because I was with you;

5 « Ma ora vado a colui che mi ha mandato; e nessuno di voi mi domanda: “Dove vai?”

and now I go away to Him who sent me, and none of you doth ask me, Whither dost thou go?

6 I nvece, perché vi ho detto queste cose, la tristezza vi ha riempito il cuore.

but because these things I have said to you, the sorrow hath filled your heart.

7 E ppure, io vi dico la verità: è utile per voi che io me ne vada; perché se non me ne vado, non verrà a voi il Consolatore; ma se me ne vado, io ve lo manderò.

`But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I may not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you, and if I go on, I will send Him unto you;

8 Q uando sarà venuto, convincerà il mondo quanto al peccato, alla giustizia e al giudizio.

and having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment;

9 Q uanto al peccato, perché non credono in me;

concerning sin indeed, because they do not believe in me;

10 q uanto alla giustizia, perché vado al Padre e non mi vedrete più;

and concerning righteousness, because unto my Father I go away, and no more do ye behold me;

11 q uanto al giudizio, perché il principe di questo mondo è stato giudicato.

and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged.

12 H o ancora molte cose da dirvi, ma non sono per ora alla vostra portata;

`I have yet many things to say to you, but ye are not able to bear now;

13 q uando però sarà venuto lui, lo Spirito della verità, egli vi guiderà in tutta la verità, perché non parlerà di suo, ma dirà tutto quello che avrà udito, e vi annuncerà le cose a venire.

and when He may come -- the Spirit of truth -- He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you;

14 E gli mi glorificherà perché prenderà del mio e ve lo annuncerà.

He will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you.

15 T utte le cose che ha il Padre, sono mie; per questo ho detto che prenderà del mio e ve lo annuncerà. Gesù parla della sua morte, della sua risurrezione e della sua venuta

`All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you;

16 « Tra poco non mi vedrete più; e tra un altro poco mi vedrete ».

a little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go away unto the Father.'

17 A llora alcuni dei suoi discepoli dissero tra di loro: «Che cos’è questo che ci dice: “Tra poco non mi vedrete più” e: “Tra un altro poco mi vedrete” e: “Perché vado al Padre”?»

Therefore said of his disciples one to another, `What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away unto the Father?'

18 D icevano dunque: «Che cos’è questo “tra poco” {che egli dice}? Noi non sappiamo quello che egli voglia dire».

they said then, `What is this he saith -- the little while? we have not known what he saith.'

19 G esù comprese che volevano interrogarlo e disse loro: «Voi vi domandate l’un l’altro che cosa significano quelle mie parole: “Tra poco non mi vedrete più” e: “Tra un altro poco mi vedrete”?

Jesus, therefore, knew that they were wishing to ask him, and he said to them, `Concerning this do ye seek one with another, because I said, A little while, and you do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?

20 I n verità, in verità vi dico che voi piangerete e farete cordoglio, e il mondo si rallegrerà. Sarete rattristati, ma la vostra tristezza sarà cambiata in gioia.

verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, and the world will rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow joy will become.

21 L a donna, quando partorisce, prova dolore perché è venuta la sua ora; ma quando ha dato alla luce il bambino, non si ricorda più dell’angoscia, per la gioia che sia venuta al mondo una creatura umana.

`The woman, when she may bear, hath sorrow, because her hour did come, and when she may bear the child, no more doth she remember the anguish, because of the joy that a man was born to the world.

22 C osì anche voi siete ora nel dolore; ma io vi vedrò di nuovo e il vostro cuore si rallegrerà, e nessuno vi toglierà la vostra gioia.

`And ye, therefore, now, indeed, have sorrow; and again I will see you, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one doth take from you,

23 I n quel giorno non mi rivolgerete alcuna domanda. In verità, in verità vi dico che qualsiasi cosa domanderete al Padre nel mio nome, egli ve la darà.

and in that day ye will question me nothing; verily, verily, I say to you, as many things as ye may ask of the Father in my name, He will give you;

24 F ino ad ora non avete chiesto nulla nel mio nome; chiedete e riceverete, affinché la vostra gioia sia completa.

till now ye did ask nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

25 « Vi ho detto queste cose in similitudini; l’ora viene che non vi parlerò più in similitudini, ma apertamente vi farò conoscere il Padre.

`These things in similitudes I have spoken to you, but there cometh an hour when no more in similitudes will I speak to you, but freely of the Father, will tell you.

26 I n quel giorno chiederete nel mio nome; e non vi dico che io pregherò il Padre per voi,

`In that day, in my name ye will make request, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you,

27 p oiché il Padre stesso vi ama, perché mi avete amato e avete creduto che sono proceduto da Dio.

for the Father himself doth love you, because me ye have loved, and ye have believed that I from God came forth;

28 S ono proceduto dal Padre e sono venuto nel mondo; ora lascio il mondo, e vado al Padre».

I came forth from the Father, and have come to the world; again I leave the world, and go on unto the Father.'

29 I suoi discepoli dissero: «Ecco, adesso tu parli apertamente e non usi similitudini.

His disciples say to him, `Lo, now freely thou dost speak, and no similitude speakest thou;

30 O ra sappiamo che sai ogni cosa e non hai bisogno che nessuno ti interroghi; perciò crediamo che sei proceduto da Dio».

now we have known that thou hast known all things, and hast no need that any one do question thee; in this we believe that from God thou didst come forth.'

31 G esù rispose loro: «Adesso credete ?

Jesus answered them, `Now do ye believe? lo, there doth come an hour,

32 L ’ora viene, anzi è venuta, che sarete dispersi, ciascuno per conto suo, e mi lascerete solo; ma io non sono solo, perché il Padre è con me.

and now it hath come, that ye may be scattered, each to his own things, and me ye may leave alone, and I am not alone, because the Father is with me;

33 V i ho detto queste cose, affinché abbiate pace in me. Nel mondo avete tribolazione; ma fatevi coraggio, io ho vinto il mondo».

these things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation, but take courage -- I have overcome the world.'
