3 L a protezione del faraone vi tornerà a confusione e il riparo all’ombra dell’Egitto a vergogna.

And the strength of Pharaoh Hath been to you for shame, And the trust in the shadow of Egypt confusion,

4 I prìncipi di Giuda sono già a Soan e i suoi ambasciatori sono già arrivati a Canes;

For in Zoan were his princes, And his messengers reach Hanes.

5 m a tutti saranno delusi di un popolo che a nulla giova loro, che non reca aiuto né giovamento alcuno, ma è la loro infamia e la loro vergogna.

6 È pronto il carico delle bestie per la regione meridionale; attraverso un paese di pericoli e angoscia, da cui vengono la leonessa e il leone, la vipera e il drago volante; essi portano le loro ricchezze sul dorso degli asinelli e i loro tesori sulla gobba dei cammelli a un popolo che non gioverà loro nulla.

9 P oiché questo è un popolo ribelle, sono figli bugiardi, figli che non vogliono ascoltare la legge del Signore,

That a rebellious people this, sons -- liars, Sons not willing to hear the law of Jehovah.

10 c he dicono ai veggenti: «Non vedete!» e a quelli che hanno visioni: «Non ci annunciate visioni di cose vere! Diteci cose piacevoli, vedete cose immaginarie!

Who have said to seers, `Ye do not see,' And to prophets, `Ye do not prophesy to us Straightforward things, Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits,

11 U scite fuori di strada, abbandonate il sentiero retto, allontanateci dagli occhi il Santo d’Israele!»

Turn aside from the way, decline from the path, Cause to cease from before us the Holy One of Israel.'

12 P erciò così dice il Santo d’Israele: «Poiché voi disprezzate questa parola e confidate nell’oppressione e nelle vie oblique, e ne fate il vostro appoggio,

Therefore, thus said the Holy One of Israel, Because of your kicking against this word, And ye trust in oppression, And perverseness, and rely on it,

13 q uesta iniquità sarà per voi come una breccia che minaccia rovina, che sporge in un alto muro, il cui crollo avviene a un tratto, in un istante,

Therefore is this iniquity to you as a breach falling, Swelled out in a wall set on high, Whose destruction suddenly, at an instant cometh.

14 e che si spezza come si spezza un vaso del vasaio che uno frantuma senza pietà, e tra i rottami del quale non si trova frammento che serva a prendere fuoco dal focolare o ad attingere acqua dalla cisterna.

And He hath broken it As the breaking of the potters' bottle, Beaten down -- He doth not spare, Nor is there found, in its beating down, A potsherd to take fire from the burning, And to draw out waters from a ditch.

15 P oiché così aveva detto il Signore, Dio, il Santo d’Israele: «Nel tornare a me e nello stare sereni sarà la vostra salvezza; nella calma e nella fiducia sarà la vostra forza». Ma voi non avete voluto!

For thus said the Lord Jehovah, The Holy One of Israel: `In returning and rest ye are saved, In keeping quiet and in confidence is your might, And ye have not been willing.

16 A vete detto: «No, noi galopperemo sui nostri cavalli!» E per questo galopperete! E: «Cavalcheremo su veloci destrieri!» E per questo quelli che v’inseguiranno saranno veloci!

And ye say, No, for on a horse we flee? Therefore ye flee, And on the swift we ride! Therefore swift are your pursuers.

17 M ille di voi fuggiranno alla minaccia di uno solo; alla minaccia di cinque vi darete alla fuga, finché rimaniate come un palo in vetta a un monte, come uno stendardo sopra un colle. Promesse per l’avvenire

One thousand because of the rebuke of one, Because of the rebuke of five ye flee, Till ye have been surely left as a pole On the top of the mountain, And as an ensign on the height.

18 T uttavia il Signore desidera farvi grazia, per questo sorgerà per concedervi misericordia; poiché il Signore è un Dio di giustizia. Beati quelli che sperano in lui!

And therefore doth wait Jehovah to favour you, And therefore He is exalted to pity you, For a God of judgment Jehovah, O the blessedness of all waiting for Him.

19 S ì, o popolo di Sion che abiti a Gerusalemme, tu non piangerai più! Egli, certo, ti farà grazia all’udire il tuo grido; appena ti avrà udito, ti risponderà.

For the people in Zion dwell in Jerusalem, Weep thou not, weeping, Pitying, He pitieth thee at the voice of thy cry, When He heareth He answereth thee.

20 I l Signore vi darà, sì, del pane d’angoscia e dell’acqua d’oppressione, ma quelli che ti insegnano non dovranno più nascondersi; e i tuoi occhi vedranno chi ti insegna.

And the Lord hath given to you bread of adversity, And water of oppression. And thy directors remove no more, And thine eyes have seen thy directors,

21 Q uando andrete a destra o quando andrete a sinistra, le tue orecchie udranno dietro a te una voce che dirà: «Questa è la via; camminate per essa!»

And thine ear heareth a word behind thee, Saying, `This the way, go ye in it,' When ye turn to the right, And when ye turn to the left.

22 C onsidererete come cose contaminate le vostre immagini scolpite, ricoperte d’argento, e le vostre immagini fuse, rivestite d’oro; le getterete via come una cosa impura. «Fuori di qui!», direte loro.

And ye have defiled the covering of Thy graven images of silver, And the ephod of thy molten image of gold, Thou scatterest them as a sickening thing, `Go out,' thou sayest to it.

23 E gli ti darà la pioggia per la semenza con cui avrai seminato il suolo, e il pane, che il suolo produrrà saporito e abbondante. In quel giorno il tuo bestiame pascolerà in vasti pascoli;

And He hath given rain thy seed, With which thou dost sow the ground, And bread, the increase of the ground, And it hath been fat and plenteous, Enjoy do thy cattle in that day an enlarged pasture.

24 i buoi e gli asini che lavorano la terra mangeranno foraggi salati, ventilati con la pala e il ventilabro.

And the oxen and the young asses serving the ground, Fermented provender do eat, That one is winnowing with shovel and fan.

25 S opra ogni alto monte e sopra ogni elevato colle ci saranno ruscelli, acque correnti, nel giorno del gran massacro, quando cadranno le torri.

And there hath been on every high mount, And on every exalted hill, Rivulets -- streams of waters, In a day of much slaughter, in the falling of towers.

26 L a luce della luna sarà come la luce del sole e la luce del sole sarà sette volte più viva, come la luce di sette giorni assieme, nel giorno che il Signore fascerà la ferita del suo popolo e guarirà la piaga da lui fatta con le sue percosse. Giudizio contro gli Assiri

27 E cco, il nome del Signore viene da lontano; la sua ira è ardente, grande è il suo furore; le sue labbra sono piene d’indignazione, la sua lingua è come un fuoco divorante;

Lo, the name of Jehovah is coming from far, Burning is His anger, and great the flame, His lips have been full of indignation, And His tongue as a devouring fire.

28 i l suo fiato è come un torrente che straripa, che arriva fino al collo. Egli viene a vagliare le nazioni con il vaglio della distruzione e a mettere tra le mascelle dei popoli un morso che li faccia fuorviare.

And His breath as an overflowing stream, Unto the neck it divideth, To sift nations with a sieve of vanity, And a bridle causing to err, on the jaws of the peoples.

29 A llora intonerete dei canti, come la notte quando si celebra una festa; avrete la gioia nel cuore, come colui che cammina al suono del flauto per andare al monte del Signore, alla Rocca d’Israele.

Singing is to you as in a night sanctified for a festival, And joy of heart as he who is going with a pipe, To go in to the mountain of Jehovah, Unto the rock of Israel.

30 I l Signore farà udire la sua voce maestosa e mostrerà come colpisce con il suo braccio, nel furore della sua ira, tra le fiamme di un fuoco divorante, in mezzo a una tempesta, a un diluvio di pioggia, e a una gragnuola di sassi.

And caused to be heard hath Jehovah The honour of His voice, And the coming down of His arm He doth shew with the raging of anger, And the flame of a consuming fire, Scattering, and inundation, and hailstone.

31 P oiché, alla voce del Signore, l’Assiro sarà costernato; il Signore lo colpirà con il suo bastone;

For from the voice of Jehovah broken down Asshur, With a rod He smiteth.

32 o gni passaggio del flagello destinatogli, che il Signore gli farà piombare addosso, sarà accompagnato dal suono di tamburelli e di cetre; il Signore combatterà contro di lui a mano alzata.

And every passage of the settled staff, That Jehovah causeth to rest on him, Hath been with tabrets, and with harps, And in battles of shaking he hath fought with it.

33 P oiché da lungo tempo Tofet è preparato, è pronto anche per il re; è profondo e ampio. Sul suo rogo c’è fuoco e legna in abbondanza; il soffio del Signore, come un torrente di zolfo, sta per accenderlo.

For, arranged from former time is Tophet, Even it for the king is prepared, He hath made deep, He hath made large, Its pile fire and much wood, The breath of Jehovah, As a stream of brim stone, is burning in it!
