1 F iglio mio, custodisci le mie parole, fa’ tesoro dei miei precetti.

My son! keep my sayings, And my commands lay up with thee.

2 O sserva i miei precetti e vivrai; custodisci il mio insegnamento come la pupilla degli occhi.

Keep my commands, and live, And my law as the pupil of thine eye.

3 L ègateli alle dita, scrivili sulla tavola del tuo cuore.

Bind them on thy fingers, Write them on the tablet of thy heart.

4 D i’ alla sapienza: «Tu sei mia sorella», e chiama l’intelligenza amica tua,

Say to wisdom, `My sister Thou.' And cry to understanding, `Kinswoman!'

5 a ffinché ti preservino dalla donna altrui, dall’estranea che usa parole seducenti.

To preserve thee from a strange woman, From a stranger who hath made smooth her sayings.

6 E ro alla finestra della mia casa, dietro la mia persiana, e stavo guardando;

For, at a window of my house, Through my casement I have looked out,

7 v idi, tra gli sciocchi, scòrsi, tra i giovani, un ragazzo privo di senno

And I do see among the simple ones, I discern among the sons, A young man lacking understanding,

8 c he passava per la strada, presso l’angolo dov’essa abitava, e si dirigeva verso la casa di lei,

Passing on in the street, near her corner, And the way her house he doth step,

9 a l crepuscolo, sul declinare del giorno, quando la notte si faceva nera, oscura.

In the twilight -- in the evening of day, In the darkness of night and blackness.

10 E cco farglisi incontro una donna in abito da prostituta e astuta di cuore,

And, lo, a woman to meet him -- (A harlot's dress, and watchful of heart,

11 t urbolenta e proterva, che non teneva piede in casa:

Noisy she, and stubborn, In her house her feet rest not.

12 o ra in strada, ora per le piazze e in agguato presso ogni angolo.

Now in an out-place, now in broad places, And near every corner she lieth in wait) --

13 E ssa lo prese, lo baciò e sfacciatamente gli disse:

And she laid hold on him, and kissed him, She hath hardened her face, and saith to him,

14 « Dovevo fare un sacrificio di riconoscenza; oggi ho sciolto i miei voti;

`Sacrifices of peace-offerings by me, To-day I have completed my vows.

15 p erciò ti son venuta incontro per cercarti, e ti ho trovato.

Therefore I have come forth to meet thee, To seek earnestly thy face, and I find thee.

16 H o abbellito il mio letto con morbidi tappeti; con coperte ricamate con filo d’Egitto;

ornamental coverings I decked my couch, Carved works -- cotton of Egypt.

17 l ’ho profumato di mirra, di aloè e di cinnamomo.

I sprinkled my bed -- myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

18 V ieni, inebriamoci d’amore fino al mattino, sollazziamoci in amorosi piaceri,

Come, we are filled loves till the morning, We delight ourselves in loves.

19 p oiché mio marito non è a casa: è andato in viaggio lontano;

For the man is not in his house, He hath gone on a long journey.

20 h a preso con sé un sacchetto di denaro, non tornerà a casa che al plenilunio».

A bag of money he hath taken in his hand, At the day of the new moon he cometh to his house.'

21 L ei lo sedusse con le sue molte lusinghe, lo trascinò con la dolcezza delle sue labbra.

She turneth him aside with the abundance of her speech, With the flattery of her lips she forceth him.

22 E gli le andò dietro subito, come un bue va al macello, come uno stolto è condotto ai ceppi che lo castigheranno,

He is going after her straightway, As an ox unto the slaughter he cometh, And as a fetter unto the chastisement of a fool,

23 c ome un uccello si affretta al laccio, senza sapere che è teso contro la sua vita, finché una freccia gli trapassi il fegato.

Till an arrow doth split his liver, As a bird hath hastened unto a snare, And hath not known that it for its life.

24 O r dunque, figlioli, ascoltatemi, state attenti alle parole della mia bocca.

And now, ye sons, hearken to me, And give attention to sayings of my mouth.

25 I l tuo cuore non si lasci trascinare nelle vie di una tale donna; non ti sviare per i suoi sentieri;

Let not thy heart turn unto her ways, Do not wander in her paths,

26 p erché molti ne ha fatti cadere feriti a morte, e grande è il numero di quelli che ha uccisi.

For many the wounded she caused to fall, And mighty all her slain ones.

27 L a sua casa è la via del soggiorno dei morti, la strada che scende in grembo alla morte.

The ways of Sheol -- her house, Going down unto inner chambers of death!
