1 A llora Giobbe rispose e disse:

And Job answereth and saith: --

2 « Voi, certo, valete quanto un popolo, e con voi morirà la saggezza.

Truly -- ye the people, And with you doth wisdom die.

3 M a di senno ne ho anch’io quanto voi, non vi sono affatto inferiore; cose come queste chi non le sa?

I also have a heart like you, I am not fallen more than you, And with whom is there not like these?

4 I o dunque dovrei essere il ludibrio degli amici! Io, che invocavo Dio ed egli mi rispondeva; il ludibrio io, l’uomo giusto, integro!

A laughter to his friend I am: `He calleth to God, and He answereth him,' A laughter the perfect righteous one.

5 I l disprezzo per la sventura altrui è nel pensiero di chi vive nella prosperità; esso è sempre pronto a colpire, se uno ha il piede che vacilla.

A torch -- despised in the thoughts of the secure Is prepared for those sliding with the feet.

6 S ono invece tranquille le tende dei ladri; chi provoca Dio, chi si fa un dio della propria forza, se ne sta al sicuro.

At peace are the tents of spoilers, And those provoking God have confidence, He into whose hand God hath brought.

7 M a interroga un po’ gli animali, e te lo insegneranno; gli uccelli del cielo, e te lo mostreranno;

And yet, ask, I pray thee, the beasts, and it doth shew thee, And a fowl of the heavens, And it doth declare to thee.

8 o ppure parla alla terra ed essa te lo insegnerà, e i pesci del mare te lo racconteranno.

Or talk to the earth, and it sheweth thee, And fishes of the sea recount to thee:

9 C hi non sa, fra tutte queste creature, che la mano del Signore ha fatto ogni cosa,

`Who hath not known in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath done this?

10 c he egli tiene in mano l’anima di tutto quel che vive e lo spirito di ogni carne umana?

In whose hand the breath of every living thing, And the spirit of all flesh of man.'

11 L ’orecchio non discerne forse le parole, come il palato assaggia i cibi?

Doth not the ear try words? And the palate taste food for itself?

12 N ei vecchi si trova la saggezza, e lunghezza di giorni dà intelligenza. Giobbe afferma la potenza di Dio

With the very aged wisdom, And length of days understanding.

13 « In Dio stanno la saggezza e la potenza, a lui appartengono il consiglio e l’intelligenza.

With Him wisdom and might, To him counsel and understanding.

14 E gli abbatte, e nessuno può ricostruire. Chiude un uomo in prigione, e non c’è chi gli apra.

Lo, He breaketh down, and it is not built up, He shutteth against a man, And it is not opened.

15 E gli trattiene le acque, e tutto inaridisce; le lascia andare, ed esse sconvolgono la terra.

Lo, He keepeth in the waters, and they are dried up, And he sendeth them forth, And they overturn the land.

16 E gli possiede la forza e l’abilità; da lui dipendono chi erra e chi fa errare.

With Him strength and wisdom, His the deceived and deceiver.

17 E gli manda scalzi i consiglieri, colpisce di demenza i giudici.

Causing counsellors to go away a spoil, And judges He maketh foolish.

18 S cioglie i legami dell’autorità dei re e cinge i loro fianchi di catene.

The bands of kings He hath opened, And He bindeth a girdle on their loins.

19 M anda scalzi i sacerdoti e rovescia i potenti.

Causing ministers to go away a spoil And strong ones He overthroweth.

20 P riva della parola i più eloquenti e toglie il discernimento ai vecchi.

Turning aside the lip of the stedfast, And the reason of the aged He taketh away.

21 S parge il disprezzo sui nobili e scioglie la cintura ai forti.

Pouring contempt upon princes, And the girdle of the mighty He made feeble.

22 R ivela le cose recondite, facendole uscire dalle tenebre, e porta alla luce ciò che è avvolto in ombra di morte.

Removing deep things out of darkness, And He bringeth out to light death-shade.

23 A ccresce i popoli e li annienta, amplia le nazioni e le riconduce nei loro confini;

Magnifying the nations, and He destroyeth them, Spreading out the nations, and He quieteth them.

24 t oglie il senno ai capi della terra e li fa peregrinare in solitudini senza sentiero.

Turning aside the heart Of the heads of the people of the land, And he causeth them to wander In vacancy -- no way!

25 B rancolano nelle tenebre, senza alcuna luce, e li fa barcollare come ubriachi.

They feel darkness, and not light, He causeth them to wander as a drunkard.
