1 ف َأجابَ أيُّوبُ:

And Job answereth and saith: --

2 « لا بُدَّ أنَّكُمْ أهلُ الحِكْمَةِ. وَتَمُوتُ الحِكْمَةُ بِمَوْتِكُمْ!

Truly -- ye the people, And with you doth wisdom die.

3 ل َكِنْ لِي أنا أيضاً عَقلٌ مِثلَكُمْ، فَلَسْتُ أقِلَّ مِنكُمْ. فَمَنْ لا يَعْرِفُ هَذا الَّذِي تَقُولُونَهُ؟

I also have a heart like you, I am not fallen more than you, And with whom is there not like these?

4 « ها قَد أصبَحْتُ أُضْحُوكَةً لِأصدِقائِي. يَقُولُونَ دَعا اللهَ، فَاسْتَجابَ إلَيهِ بِالآلامِ. فَها هُوَ البّارُّ وَالمُستَقِيمُ يُصبِحُ أُضْحُوكَةً.

A laughter to his friend I am: `He calleth to God, and He answereth him,' A laughter the perfect righteous one.

5 ف َالَّذِينَ يَعِيشُونَ حَياةً هانِئَةً، يَستَخِفُّونَ بِمَصائِبِ الآخَرِينَ، يَضرِبُونَ الإنسانَ بَعْدَ أنْ يَسقُطَ!

A torch -- despised in the thoughts of the secure Is prepared for those sliding with the feet.

6 ب ُيُوتُ اللُّصُوصِ تَسلَمُ، وَالَّذِينَ يُغِيظُونَ اللهَ يَعِيشُونَ بِأمانٍ! مَعَ أنَّ مَصَائِرَهُمْ فِي يَدِ اللهِ!

At peace are the tents of spoilers, And those provoking God have confidence, He into whose hand God hath brought.

7 « اسْألِ البَهائِمَ فَتُعَلِّمَكَ، وَطُيُورَ السَّماءِ فَسَتُخبِرَكَ.

And yet, ask, I pray thee, the beasts, and it doth shew thee, And a fowl of the heavens, And it doth declare to thee.

8 أ وْ حَدِّثِ الأرْضَ فَتُرشِدَكَ، أوْ سَمَكَ البَحرِ فَيَروِيَ لَكَ.

Or talk to the earth, and it sheweth thee, And fishes of the sea recount to thee:

9 م َنْ مِنْها لا يَعرِفُ أنَّ يَدَ اللهِ هِيَ الَّتِي فَعَلَتْ هَذا بِكَ،

`Who hath not known in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath done this?

10 ف َهُوَ يَتَحَكَّمُ بِنَفَسِ كُلِّ شَيءٍ حَيٍّ، وَبِرُوحِ كُلِّ بَشَرٍ.

In whose hand the breath of every living thing, And the spirit of all flesh of man.'

11 أ لا تَزِنُ الأُذُنُ الكَلامَ، كَما يَفحَصُ اللِّسانُ الطَعامَ؟

Doth not the ear try words? And the palate taste food for itself?

12 ه َلِ الحِكْمَةُ لِلشُّيُوخِ، وَالفَهُمُ لِمَنْ يَعِيشُونَ طَوِيلاً؟

With the very aged wisdom, And length of days understanding.

13 ب َلِ الحِكْمَةُ وَالقُوَّةُ للهِ، لَهُ الحُكمُ الصّائِبُ وَالفَهْمُ.

With Him wisdom and might, To him counsel and understanding.

14 إ ذا هَدَمَ، فَلا أحَدَ يَبنِي. إذا أغلَقَ عَلَى أحَدٍ، فَلا أحَدَ يَفتَحُ.

Lo, He breaketh down, and it is not built up, He shutteth against a man, And it is not opened.

15 إ ذا حَجَزَ المَطَرَ، يَجِفُّ كُلَّ شَيءٍ، وَإذا أرْسَلَهُ، فَإنَّهُ يَغمُرُ الأرْضَ.

Lo, He keepeth in the waters, and they are dried up, And he sendeth them forth, And they overturn the land.

16 ل َهُ القُوَّةُ وَالحِكْمَةُ. الرّابِحُونَ وَالخاسِرُونَ كُلُّهُمْ للهِ.

With Him strength and wisdom, His the deceived and deceiver.

17 ي َنزِعُ الحِكْمَةَ مِنَ النّاصِحِينَ، وَيَجعَلُ القُضاةَ يَبدُونَ كَحَمقَى.

Causing counsellors to go away a spoil, And judges He maketh foolish.

18 ي َنزِعُ قُوَّةَ المُلُوكِ، وَيُطَوِّقُهُمْ بِقُيُودِ.

The bands of kings He hath opened, And He bindeth a girdle on their loins.

19 ي َنزِعُ قُوَّةَ الكَهَنَةِ، وَيُنزِلُ ذَوِي المَراكِزَ الَّتِي يَظُنُّونَها خالِدَةً.

Causing ministers to go away a spoil And strong ones He overthroweth.

20 ي ُخْرِسُ النّاصِحِينَ المُؤتَمَنِينَ، وَيَنزِعُ حُسْنَ التَميِيزِ مِنَ الشُّيُوخِ.

Turning aside the lip of the stedfast, And the reason of the aged He taketh away.

21 ي َسكُبُ الخَجَلَ عَلَى النُّبَلاءِ، وَيَنزِعُ قُوَّةَ الأقوِياءِ.

Pouring contempt upon princes, And the girdle of the mighty He made feeble.

22 ي َكشِفُ أعمَقَ أسرارِ الظُلمَةِ، وَيُعلِنَ ما هُوَ مُظلِمٌ كَالمَوتِ.

Removing deep things out of darkness, And He bringeth out to light death-shade.

23 ي ُقَوِّي الأُمَمَ، ثُمَّ يُدَمِّرُها، يُوَسِّعُ حُدُودَ البِلادِ، ثُمَّ يُشَتِّتُ شُعُوبَها.

Magnifying the nations, and He destroyeth them, Spreading out the nations, and He quieteth them.

24 ي َنزِعُ فَهْمَ قادَةِ شَعبِ الأرْضِ، وَيُضِلُّهُمْ فِي أرْضٍ قاحِلَةٍ بِلا طَرِيقٍ.

Turning aside the heart Of the heads of the people of the land, And he causeth them to wander In vacancy -- no way!

25 ف َيَدُورُونَ كَالسُّكارَى، يَتَلَمَّسُونَ طَرِيقَهُمْ فِي الظُّلمَةِ دُونَ نُورٍ.

They feel darkness, and not light, He causeth them to wander as a drunkard.
