1 « لَكِنْ اسْمَعِ الآنَ كَلامِي يا أيُّوبُ، وَانتَبِه إلَى كَلِماتِي.

And yet, I pray thee, O Job, Hear my speech and all my words give ear.

2 س َأفتَحُ فَمِي، وَسَأتَحَدَّثُ بِما فِي فِكْرِي.

Lo, I pray thee, I have opened my mouth, My tongue hath spoken in the palate.

3 س َأقُولُ ما يَجُولُ حقّاً فِي خاطِرِي، وَسَيَنقُلُ لِسانِي بِإخلاصٍ ما أعرِفُهُ.

Of the uprightness of my heart my sayings, And knowledge have my lips clearly spoken.

4 ر ُوحُ اللهِ خَلَقَنِي، وَنَسْمَةُ القَدِيرِ أحْيَتنِي.

The Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Mighty doth quicken me.

5 ف َإنْ كُنتَ تَستَطِيعُ الرَّدَّ عَلَيَّ، فَحَضِّرْ حُجَّتَكَ وَقِفْ.

If thou art able -- answer me, Set in array before me -- station thyself.

6 أ نا مِثلُكَ فِي حَضْرَةِ اللهِ. فَقَدْ قُطِعْتُ أيضاً مِنَ الطِّينِ.

Lo, I, according to thy word, for God, From the clay I -- I also, have been formed.

7 ف َلَيسَ هُناكَ ما يُخِيفُكَ مِنِّي، وَقُوَّتِي لَنْ تُثَقِّلَ عَلَيكَ.

Lo, my terror doth not frighten thee, And my burden on thee is not heavy.

8 « غَيرَ أنَّكَ تَكَلَّمْتَ فِي أُذُنِي، فَسَمِعتُ صَوتَكَ حِينَ تَكَلَّمْتَ.

Surely -- thou hast said in mine ears, And the sounds of words I hear:

9 ت َقَولُ: ‹أنا نَقِيٌّ بِلا ذَنبٍ، وَطاهِرٌ بِلا إثمٍ.

`Pure I, without transgression, Innocent I, and I have no iniquity.

10 غ َيرَ أنَّ للهِ أسباباً فِي مُعاداتِي، وَيَحسِبُنِي عَدُوّاً لَهُ.

Lo, occasions against me He doth find, He doth reckon me for an enemy to Him,

11 ي ُقَيِّدُ قَدَمَيَّ بِالحَدِيدِ وَالخَشَبِ، وَيَحرُسُ كُلَّ مَنافِذِ هُرُوبِي.›

He doth put in the stocks my feet, He doth watch all my paths.'

12 « إنَّكَ مُخطِئٌ حَقّاً فِي هَذا، وَلِهَذا سَأُجِيبُكَ: «إنَّ اللهَ أعْظَمُ مِنْ كُلِّ البَشَرِ.

Lo, this thou hast not been righteous, I answer thee, that greater is God than man.

13 ل ِماذا تَتَّهِمُهُ وَتَقُولُ: ‹إنَّ اللهَ لا يُجِيبُ عَنْ كُلِّ اتِّهاماتِ الإنسانِ؟›

Wherefore against Him hast thou striven, When all His matters He answereth not?

14 ل َكِنَّ اللهَ يُكَلِّمُ النّاسَ بِطُرُقٍ مُختَلِفَةٍ، وَالإنسانُ لا يُدرِكُ ذَلِكَ.

For once doth God speak, and twice, (He doth not behold it.)

15 ي َتَحَدَّثُ فِي حُلُمٍ، فِي رُؤيا اللَّيلِ. عِندَما يَنعَسُ النّاسُ وَيَنامُونَ،

In a dream -- a vision of night, In the falling of deep sleep on men, In slumberings on a bed.

16 ح ِينَئِذٍ، يَفتَحُ اللهُ آذانَهُمْ، وَيُخِيفُهُمْ بِتَحْذِيراتِهِ.

Then He uncovereth the ear of men, And for their instruction sealeth:

17 ل ِيُحَوِّلَ الإنسانَ عَمّا يَفعَلُهُ، وَلِيَمنَعَ الإنسانَ مِنَ التَّكَبُّرِ أوِ التَّفاخُرِ.

To turn aside man doing, And pride from man He concealeth.

18 ي َحفَظُهُ اللهُ مِنَ الهاوِيَةِ، وَيَحفَظُ حَياتَهُ مِنْ عُبُورِ نَهرِ المَوتِ.

He keepeth back his soul from corruption, And his life from passing away by a dart.

19 ي ُؤَدِّبُهُ بِالوَجَعِ عَلَى فِراشِهِ، وَبِألَمٍ مُتَّصِلٍ فِي عِظامِهِ.

And he hath been reproved With pain on his bed, And the strife of his bones enduring.

20 ف َيَكرَهُ الطَعامَ، وَيَنفُرُ حَتَّى مِنْ أطايِبِهِ.

And his life hath nauseated bread, And his soul desirable food.

21 ل ا يَعُودُ لَحمُهُ يُرَى مِنَ الهُزالِ، وَتَبرُزُ عِظامُهُ وَتُرَى.

His flesh is consumed from being seen, And high are his bones, they were not seen!

22 م ِنَ الهاوِيَةِ تَقتَرِبُ نَفسُهُ. مِنَ القَتَلَةِ تَدنُو حَياتُهُ.

And draw near to the pit doth his soul, And his life to those causing death.

23 و َلَو كانَ هُناكَ مَلاكٌ واحِدٌ، وَسِيطٌ هُوَ الأفضَلُ بَينَ ألفٍ، يُدافِعُ عَنِ استِقامَتِهِ،

If there is by him a messenger, An interpreter -- one of a thousand, To declare for man his uprightness:

24 ي َطلُبُ لَهُ رَحمَةً وَيَقُولُ للهِ: «جَنِّبْهُ الهُبُوطَ فِي الهاوِيَةِ، لأنِّي دَبَّرتُ لَهُ فِديَةً.»

Then He doth favour him and saith, `Ransom him from going down to the pit, I have found an atonement.'

25 ف َيَتَجَدَّدُ لَحمُهُ كَشّابٍ، وَإلَيهِ تَعُودُ قُوَّةُ الصِّبا.

Fresher his flesh than a child's, He returneth to the days of his youth.

26 ي ُصَلِّي الإنسانُ إلَى اللهِ فَيَحظَى بِرِضاهُ. وَيُسَرُّ اللهَ أنْ يُعلِنَ نَفسَهُ لِلإنسانِ، فَيَرُدُّ لِلإنسانِ حَقَّهُ.

He maketh supplication unto God, And He accepteth him. And he seeth His face with shouting, And He returneth to man His righteousness.

27 ي َهتِفُ أمامَ النّاسِ وَيَقُولُ: ‹أذْنَبْتُ وَعَوَّجتُ المُستَقِيمَ، لَكِنْ لَمْ أُجازَ عَلَيهِ.

He looketh on men, and saith, `I sinned, And uprightness I have perverted, And it hath not been profitable to me.

28 ب َلْ فَدَى نَفسِي مِنَ الهاوِيَةِ، فَسَأنظُرُ إلَى نُورِ الحَياةِ وَأتَمَتَّعُ.›

He hath ransomed my soul From going over into the pit, And my life on the light looketh.'

29 « نَعَمْ، قَد يَفعَلُ اللهُ كُلَّ هَذِهِ الأُمُورِ مَرَّتَينِ وَثَلاثاً لِلإنسانِ،

Lo, all these doth God work, Twice -- thrice with man,

30 ل ِكَي يَرُدَّ نَفسَهُ مِنَ الهاوِيَةِ وَالهَلاكِ، وَيُنِيرَ عَلَيهِ بِنُورِ الحَياةِ.

To bring back his soul from the pit, To be enlightened with the light of the living.

31 « انتَبِهْ يا أيُّوبُ، وَاستَمِعْ إلَيَّ. اصْمُتْ وَدَعْنِي أتَكَلَّمْ.

Attend, O Job, hearken to me, Keep silent, and I -- I do speak.

32 إ نْ كانَ لَدَيكَ جَوابٌ فَقُلْهُ، لأنِّي أتَمَنَّى أنْ أجِدَكَ مُحِقّاً.

If there are words -- answer me, Speak, for I have a desire to justify thee.

33 و َإنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَدَيكَ جَوابٌ، فَاسْتَمِعْ إلَيَّ. اصمُتْ وَسَأُعَلِّمُكَ الحِكْمَةَ.»

If there are not -- hearken thou to me, Keep silent, and I teach thee wisdom.
