1 أ يُّها الإخوَةُ، أنتُمْ تُؤمِنونَ بِرَبِّنا يَسُوعَ المَسِيحِ، فَلا يَجوزُ لَكُمْ أنْ تُمَيِّزوا بَينَ النّاسِ.

My brethren, hold not, in respect of persons, the faith of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ,

2 ف َلنَفتَرِضْ أنَّ رَجُلَينِ دَخَلا إلَى مَكانِ اجتِماعِكُمْ: أحَدُهُما يَلبِسُ ثِياباً ثَمِينَةً وَفِي يَدِهِ خاتَمٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، وَالآخَرُ فَقِيرٌ يَلبِسُ ثِياباً قَذِرَةً بالِيَةً.

for if there may come into your synagogue a man with gold ring, in gay raiment, and there may come in also a poor man in vile raiment,

3 و َلْنَقُلْ إنَّكُمْ أظهَرتُمُ اهتِماماً خاصّاً بِالَّذِي يَلبِسُ ثِياباً ثَمِينَةً، فَقُلتُمْ لَهُ: «تَفَضَّلِ اجلِسْ هُنا فِي أفضَلِ مَكانٍ.» بَينَما قُلْتُمْ لِلفَقَيرِ: «قِفْ هُناكَ!» أوِ «اجلِسْ عَلَى الأرْضِ عِندَ أقدامِنا!»

and ye may look upon him bearing the gay raiment, and may say to him, `Thou -- sit thou here well,' and to the poor man may say, `Thou -- stand thou there, or, Sit thou here under my footstool,' --

4 أ لا تَضَعُونَ بِذَلِكَ حَواجِزَ فِيما بَينَكُمْ، وَتُصبِحُونَ قُضاةً ذَوي أفكارٍ شِرِّيرَةٍ؟

ye did not judge fully in yourselves, and did become ill-reasoning judges.

5 ا سْمَعُوا يا إخْوَتِي الأحِبّاءُ، ألَمْ يَختَرِ اللهُ الفُقَراءَ فِي نَظَرِ النّاسِ، لِيَكُونُوا أغنِياءَ فِي الإيمانِ، وَوَرَثَةً لِلمَلَكُوتِ الَّذِي وَعَدَ اللهُ بِهِ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَهُ؟

Hearken, my brethren beloved, did not God choose the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the reign that He promised to those loving Him?

6 أ مّا أنتُمْ فَقَدْ أهَنتُمُ الفَقِيرَ! لَكِنْ ألَيسَ الأغنِياءُ هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَضطَهِدونَكُمْ وَيَسُوقُونَكُمْ إلَى المَحاكِمِ؟

and ye did dishonour the poor one; do not the rich oppress you and themselves draw you to judgment-seats;

7 أ لَيسُوا هُمِ الَّذِينَ يُهِينُونَ الاسْمَ الجَمِيلَ الَّذِي تُنسَبُونَ إلَيْهِ؟

do they not themselves speak evil of the good name that was called upon you?

8 أ نتُمْ تَعمَلُونَ الصَّوابَ إنْ كُنتُمْ تُطِيعُونَ الوَصِيَّةَ المُلُوكِيَّةَ الوارِدَةَ فِي الكَلِمَةِ المَكتُوبَةِ: «تُحِبُّ صاحِبَكَ كَما تُحِبُّ نَفسَكَ.»

If, indeed, royal law ye complete, according to the Writing, `Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself,' -- ye do well;

9 أ مّا إذا مَيَّزتُمْ بَينَ النّاسِ، فَأنتُمْ تَكسِرُونَ شَرِيعَةَ اللهِ.

and if ye accept persons, sin ye do work, being convicted by the law as transgressors;

10 أ قُولُ هَذا لِأنَّ مَنْ يُطَبِّقُ الشَّرِيعَةَ كُلَّها، وَلَكِنَّهُ يَكسِرُ وَصِيَّةً واحِدَةً، يَكُونُ مُذنِباً بِكَسرِ الوَصايا كُلِّها!

for whoever the whole law shall keep, and shall stumble in one, he hath become guilty of all;

11 ف َالَّذِي قالَ: «لا تَزْنِ.» قالَ أيضاً: «لا تَقتُلْ.» فَإنْ كُنتَ لا تَزْني، لَكِنَّكَ تَقتُلُ، فَقَدْ كَسَرتَ الشَّرِيعَةَ.

for He who is saying, `Thou mayest not commit adultery,' said also, `Thou mayest do no murder;' and if thou shalt not commit adultery, and shalt commit murder, thou hast become a transgressor of law;

12 ف َتَكَلَّمُوا وَاعْمَلُوا كَأُناسٍ سَيُحاكَمُونَ بِحَسَبِ الشَّرِيعَةِ بِحُرِّيَّةٍ.

so speak ye and so do, as about by a law of liberty to be judged,

13 ل ِأنَّ دَينُونَةَ اللهِ سَتَكُونُ بِلا رَحمَةٍ تُجاهَ عَدِيمِي الرَّحمَةِ، أمّا الرَّحمَةَ، فَإنَّها تَنتَصِرُ عَلَى الدَّينُونَةِ! الإيمانُ وَالأعمال

for the judgment without kindness to him not having done kindness, and exult doth kindness over judgment.

14 م ا الفائِدَةُ يا إخْوَتِي، إنْ قالَ أحَدٌ إنَّهُ يُؤمِنُ، لَكِنْ لَيسَ لَهُ أعمالٌ؟ فَذَلِكَ الإيمانُ لا يَستَطِيعُ أنْ يُخَلِّصَهُ.

What the profit, my brethren, if faith, any one may speak of having, and works he may not have? is that faith able to save him?

15 ف َلَوِ احتاجَ أحَدُ الإخوَةِ أوِ الأخَواتِ إلَى ثِيابٍ أوْ طَعامٍ،

and if a brother or sister may be naked, and may be destitute of the daily food,

16 ف َقالَ أحَدُكُمْ لَهُما: «يُبارِكُكُما اللهُ. استَدفِئا وَكُلا حَتَّى الشَّبَعِ!» لَكِنَّكُمْ لَمْ تُعطُوهُما ما يَحتاجُ إلَيهِ الجَسَدُ مِنْ ثِيابٍ وَطَعامٍ، فَما الفائِدَةُ؟

and any one of you may say to them, `Depart ye in peace, be warmed, and be filled,' and may not give to them the things needful for the body, what the profit?

17 ه َكَذا الإيمانُ أيضاً: إنْ لَمْ تُرافِقْهُ أعمالٌ، فَهُوَ إيمانٌ مَيِّتٌ.

so also the faith, if it may not have works, is dead by itself.

18 و َقَدْ يَقُولُ أحَدُهُمْ: «هُناكَ مَنْ لَهُ إيمانٌ، وَهُناكَ مَنْ لَهُ أعمالٌ!» فَأقولُ إنَّكَ لا تَسْتَطيعُ أنْ تُظْهِرَ إيمانَكَ مِنْ دُونِ أعمالٍ، أمّا أنا فَأُظْهِرُ إيمانِي مِنْ خِلالِ أعمالِي.

But say may some one, Thou hast faith, and I have works, shew me thy faith out of thy works, and I will shew thee out of my works my faith:

19 أ تُؤمِنُ أنَّ اللهَ واحِدٌ؟ هَذا حَسَنٌ! لَكِنْ حَتَّى الأرواحُ الشِّرِّيْرَةُ تُؤمِنُ بِذَلِكَ وَتَرتَعِشُ خَوفاً.

thou -- thou dost believe that God is one; thou dost well, and the demons believe, and they shudder!

20 أ يُّها الجاهِلُ، أتُرِيدُ دَلِيلاً عَلَى أنَّ الإيمانَ مِنْ دُونِ أعمالٍ بِلا فائِدَةٍ؟

And dost thou wish to know, O vain man, that the faith apart from the works is dead?

21 أ لَمْ يُعتَبَرْ أبُونا إبراهِيمُ بارّاً فِي نَظَرِ اللهِ بِأعمالِهِ، وَذَلِكَ عِندَما قَدَّمَ ابنَهُ اسحَقَ عَلَى المَذبَحِ؟

Abraham our father -- was not he declared righteous out of works, having brought up Isaac his son upon the altar?

22 ف َأنتَ تَرَى أنَّ الإيمانَ كانَ يَعمَلُ مَعَ أعمالِ إبراهِيمَ، وَأنَّ إيمانَهُ قَدِ اكْتَمَلَ بِأعمالِهِ.

dost thou see that the faith was working with his works, and out of the works the faith was perfected?

23 و َهَكَذا تَمَّ المَكتُوبُ: «آمَنَ إبْراهِيمُ بِاللهِ، فاعتَبَرَهُ اللهُ بارّاً بِسَبَبِ إيمانِهِ.» لِذَلِكَ دُعِيَ «خَلِيلَ اللهِ.»

and fulfilled was the Writing that is saying, `And Abraham did believe God, and it was reckoned to him -- to righteousness;' and, `Friend of God' he was called.

24 ف َالإنسانُ، كَما تَرَى، يُعتَبَرُ بارّاً أمامَ اللهِ بِالأعمالِ لا بِالإيمانِ وَحدَهُ.

Ye see, then, that out of works is man declared righteous, and not out of faith only;

25 و َكَذَلِكَ راحابُ السّاقِطَةُ. ألَمْ يَعتَبِرْها اللهُ بارَّةً عِندَما رَحَّبَتْ بِالجاسُوسَيْنِ، وَساعَدَتْهُما عَلَى الهَرَبِ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ آخَرَ؟

and in like manner also Rahab the harlot -- was she not out of works declared righteous, having received the messengers, and by another way having sent forth?

26 ف َكَما يَكُونُ الجَسَدُ بِلا رُوحٍ جَسَداً مَيِّتاً، كَذَلِكَ الإيمانُ بِلا أعمالٍ هُوَ إيمانٌ مَيِّتٌ.

for as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also the faith apart from the works is dead.
