1 ث ُمَّ تابَعَ ألِيهُو فَقالَ:

And Elihu answereth and saith:

2 « استَمِعُوا أيُّها الحُكَماءُ إلَى كَلامِي، وَأصغُوا إلَيَّ يا أصحابَ المَعرِفَةِ.

Hear, O wise men, my words, And, O knowing ones, give ear to me.

3 ل أنَّ الأُذُنَ تَتَفَحَّصُ الكَلامَ، كَما يَذُوقُ اللِّسانُ الطَعامَ.

For the ear doth try words, And the palate tasteth to eat.

4 ف َلْنُقَرِّرْ لِأنفُسَنا ما هُوَ العَدلُ، وَلِنَكْتَشِفْ مَعاً ما هُوَ صالِحٌ.

Judgment let us choose for ourselves, Let us know among ourselves what good.

5 ل أنَّ أيُّوبَ يَقُولُ: ‹أنا بَرِيءٌ، وَقَد ظَلَمَنِي القَدِيرُ.

For Job hath said, `I have been righteous, And God hath turned aside my right,

6 أ ُدعَى كاذِباً رُغْمَ حَقِّي. وَلا شِفاءَ لِجُرحِي مَعَ أنِّي لَمْ أقتَرِفْ ذَنباً.›

Against my right do I lie? Mortal mine arrow -- without transgression.'

7 « فَأيُّ إنسانٍ كَأيُّوبَ؟ يَشرَبُ السُّخْرِيَةَ كَالماءِ!

Who a man like Job? He drinketh scoffing like water,

8 و َيَسلُكُ طَرِيقاً لِيَنضَمَّ إلَى فاعِلِي الشَّرِّ، وَيُرافِقُ المُجرِمِينَ.

And he hath travelled for company With workers of iniquity, So as to go with men of wickedness.

9 ل أنَّهُ يَقُولُ: ‹لا فائِدَةَ مِنْ أنْ يُحاوِلَ الإنسانُ إرضاءَ اللهِ.›

For he hath said, `It doth not profit a man, When he delighteth himself with God.'

10 « لِهَذا اسْمَعُونِي يا أصحابَ الفَهْمِ. حاشا أنْ يَرتَبِطَ اللهُ بِذَنبٍ، وَأنْ تَكُونَ لِلقَدِيرِ عَلاقَةٌ بِالشَّرِّ.

Therefore, O men of heart, hearken to me; Far be it from God to do wickedness, And the Mighty to do perverseness:

11 ل أنَّ اللهَ يُعطِي الإنسانَ أُجرَةَ أعمالِهِ، وَيَجلُبُ عَلَيهِ ما يَستَحِقُّهُ.

For the work of man he repayeth to him, And according to the path of each He doth cause him to find.

12 و َحاشا للهِ أنْ يَحكُمَ عَلَى النّاسِ ظُلماً، وَللِقَدِيرِ أنْ يَعمَلَ بِغَيرِ عَدلٍ.

Yea, truly, God doth not do wickedly, And the Mighty doth not pervert judgment.

13 ف َمَنِ الَّذِي أوْكَلَهُ عَلَى الأرْضِ؟ وَمَن عَيَّنَهُ عَلَى كُلِّ الكَوْنِ؟

Who hath inspected for Himself the earth? And who hath placed all the habitable world?

14 إ ذا قَرَّرَ أنْ يَستَرِدَّ رُوحَهُ وَيَستَعِيدَ نَسَمَةَ الحَياةِ،

If He doth set on him His heart, His spirit and his breath unto Him He gathereth.

15 ف َسَيَمُوتُ كُلُّ جَسَدٍ عَلَى الأرْضِ. وَيَعُودُ الإنْسانُ إلَى التُّرابِ.

Expire doth all flesh together, And man to dust returneth.

16 « إنْ كانَ لَكَ فَهْمٌ فَاسْمَعْ هَذا، اسْتَمِعْ إلَى كَلامِي:

And if understanding, hear this, Give ear to the voice of my words.

17 إ نْ كانَ القَدِيرُ يُبْغِضُ العَدلَ، فَكَيفَ يَحْكُمُ؟ وَإنْ كُنْتَ بارّاً، فَلِماذا تَدينُ القَدِيرَ؟

Yea, doth one hating justice govern? Or the Most Just dost thou condemn?

18 ه ُوَ الَّذِي يَقُولُ لِلمَلِكِ: ‹أنتَ بِلا قِيمَةٍ.› وَللِشَّرِيفِ: ‹أنتَ شِرِّيرٌ.›

Who hath said to a king -- `Worthless,' Unto princes -- `Wicked?'

19 ه ُوَ اللهُ الَّذِي لا يُفَرِّقُ بَينَ النّاسِ، وَلا يَسمَعُ طِلْباتِ الغَنِيِّ قَبلَ الفَقِيرِ، لأنَّ كِلَيْهِما عَمَلُ يَدَيهِ.

That hath not accepted the person of princes, Nor hath known the rich before the poor, For a work of His hands all of them.

20 ي ُمُوتانِ فِي لَحظَةٍ، فِي مُنتَصَفِ اللَّيلِ. يَرتَجِفُ النّاسُ وَيَمُوتُونَ. يُطِيحُ اللهُ بِالأقوِياءِ بِلا جَهْدٍ.

a moment they die, and at midnight Shake do people, and they pass away, And they remove the mighty without hand.

21 « لأنَّ عَينَيْهِ تُراقِبانِ طُرُقَ الإنسانِ وَيَرَى كُلَّ خَطَواتِهِ.

For His eyes on the ways of each, And all his steps He doth see.

22 م ا مِنْ عَتْمَةٍ أوْ حَتَّى ظَلامٍ عَمِيقٍ، يُمكِنُ أنْ يَختَفِي فِيها فاعِلُو الشَّرِّ عَنِ اللهِ.

There is no darkness nor death-shade, For workers of iniquity to be hidden there;

23 و َلَيسَ لِلإنسانِ أنْ يُحَدِّدَ مَوعِداً فِيهِ يَأتِي فِي حَضْرَةِ اللهِ للِدَّينُونَةِ.

For He doth not suffer man any more, To go unto God in judgment,

24 ي ُحَطِّمُ الأقوِياءَ وَلا يَسألُ أحَداً. وَيُعَيِّنُ آخَرِينَ مَكانَهُمْ.

He breaketh the mighty -- no searching! And He appointeth others in their stead.

25 إ نَّهُ يَعرِفُ أفعالَهُمْ حَقّاً، يَسحَقُهُمْ فِي لَيلَةٍ واحِدَةٍ.

Therefore He knoweth their works, And He hath overturned by night, And they are bruised.

26 ي ُعاقِبُهُمْ عَلَى أعمالِهِمِ الشِّرِّيرَةِ فِي العَلَنِ،

As wicked He hath stricken them, In the place of beholders.

27 ل أنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَعُودُوا يَتْبَعُونَ اللهَ، وَلا يَلتَفِتُونَ إلَى طُرُقِهِ،

Because that against right They have turned aside from after Him, And none of His ways have considered wisely,

28 ح َتَّى جَعَلُوا صُراخَ الفَقِيرِ يَصِلُ إلَيْهِ. هُوَ يَسمَعُ صَرخَةَ المُضْطَهَدِينَ.

To cause to come in unto Him The cry of the poor, And the cry of the afflicted He heareth.

29 ف َإنْ لَمْ يَفعَلْ شَيئاً، فَمَنْ يَستَذنِبهُ؟ وَإذا حَجَبَ وَجهَهُ، فَمَنْ يَقْدِرُ أنْ يَراهُ – أكانَ شَعباً أمْ فَرْداً؟

And He giveth rest, and who maketh wrong? And hideth the face, and who beholdeth it? And in reference to a nation and to a man, the same.

30 ي َمنَعَ الفاسِدَ مِنْ أنْ يَصِيرَ مَلِكاً، فَيَقُودَ شَعباً إلَى الدَّمارِ.

From the reigning of a profane man, From the snares of a people;

31 « لَكِنْ قُلْ للهِ، ‹أذنَبتُ، وَلَنْ أنْحَرِفَ ثانِيَةً.

For unto God hath any said: `I have taken away, I do not corruptly,

32 ع َلِّمْنِي ما لا أقدِرُ أنْ أراهُ. إنْ أخطَأتُ، فَلَنْ أعُودَ إلَيهِ.›

Besides I see, shew Thou me, If iniquity I have done -- I do not add?'

33 ف َهَلْ يُجازِيكَ اللهُ حَسَبَ قَولِكَ إذا رَفَضتَ حَقَّهُ؟ لأنَّكَ أنتَ الَّذِي يَختارُ، لا أنا. فَتَكَلَّمْ بِما تَعرِفُ.

By thee doth He recompense, That thou hast refused -- That thou dost choose, and not I? And what thou hast known, speak.

34 س َيَقُولُ لِي أصحابُ الفَهْمِ وَالحَكِيمُ الَّذِي يَسمَعُنِي:

Let men of heart say to me, And a wise man is hearkening to me.

35 ‹ يَتَحَدَّثُ أيُّوبُ بِلا فِهمٍ، وَكَلامُهُ يَخلو مِنَ البَصِيرَةِ.›

Job -- not with knowledge doth he speak, And his words not with wisdom.

36 ل َيتَ أيُّوبَ يُجَرَّبُ إلَى آخِرِ حَدٍّ، لأنَّهُ يُجِيبُ كَالأشرارِ.

My Father! let Job be tried -- unto victory, Because of answers for men of iniquity,

37 ف َهُوَ يُضِيفُ إلَى خَطِيَّتِهِ خَطِيَّةً. يَزِيدُ الشَّرَّ بَينَنا، وَيَكثِّرُ اتِّهاماتِهِ للهِ.»

For he doth add to his sin, Transgression among us he vomiteth, And multiplieth his sayings to God.
