1 L a parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying:

2 « Figlio d’uomo, il legno della vite che cos’è più di qualunque altro legno? Che cos’è il tralcio che è fra gli alberi della foresta?

`Son of man, What is the vine-tree more than any tree? The vine-branch that hath been, Among trees of the forest?

3 S e ne può prendere il legno per farne un qualunque lavoro? Si può forse ricavarne un piolo per appendervi un qualche oggetto?

Is wood taken from it to use for work? Do they take of it a pin to hang any vessel on it?

4 E cco, esso è gettato nel fuoco, perché si consumi: il fuoco ne consuma i due capi e il mezzo si carbonizza; è forse adatto a farne qualcosa?

Lo, to the fire it hath been given for fuel, Its two ends hath the fire eaten, And its midst hath been scorched! Is it profitable for work?

5 E cco, mentre era intatto non se ne poteva fare alcun lavoro; quanto meno se ne potrà fare qualche lavoro quando il fuoco l’abbia consumato o carbonizzato!

Lo, in its being perfect it is not used for work, How much less, when fire hath eaten of it, And it is scorched, Hath it been used yet for work?

6 P erciò, così parla il Signore, Dio: “Com’è tra gli alberi della foresta il legno della vite, che io destino al fuoco perché lo consumi, così farò degli abitanti di Gerusalemme.

Therefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: As the vine-tree among trees of the forest, That I have given to the fire for fuel, So I have given the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

7 I o volgerò la mia faccia contro di loro: dal fuoco sono usciti e il fuoco li consumerà; riconoscerete che io sono il Signore, quando avrò girato la mia faccia contro di loro.

And I have set My face against them, From the fire they have gone forth, And the fire doth consume them, And ye have known that I Jehovah, In My setting My face against them.

8 R enderò il paese desolato, perché hanno agito in modo infedele”, dice il Signore, Dio ».

And I have made the land a desolation, Because they have committed a trespass, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah!'
