1 G li uomini d’Israele avevano giurato a Mispa, dicendo: «Nessuno di noi darà sua figlia in moglie a un Beniaminita».

And the men of Israel have sworn in Mizpeh, saying, `None of us doth give his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.'

2 I l popolo venne a Betel, dove rimase fino alla sera in presenza di Dio; alzando la voce, pianse a dirotto e disse:

And the people come in to Beth-El, and sit there till the evening before God, and lift up their voice, and weep -- a great weeping,

3 « Signore, Dio d’Israele, perché mai è avvenuto questo in Israele? Perché oggi c’è in Israele una tribù di meno?

and say, `Why, O Jehovah, God of Israel, hath this been in Israel -- to be lacking to-day, from Israel, one tribe?'

4 I l giorno seguente, il popolo si alzò di buon mattino, costruì là un altare e offrì olocausti e sacrifici di riconoscenza.

And it cometh to pass on the morrow, that the people rise early, and build there an altar, and cause to ascend burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.

5 I figli d’Israele dissero: «Chi è, fra tutte le tribù d’Israele, che non sia salito all’assemblea davanti al Signore ?» Poiché avevano fatto questo giuramento solenne contro chiunque non fosse salito in presenza del Signore a Mispa: «Quel tale dovrà essere messo a morte».

And the sons of Israel say, `Who he that hath not come up in the assembly out of all the tribes of Israel unto Jehovah?' for the great oath hath been concerning him who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh, saying, `He is surely put to death.'

6 I figli d’Israele ebbero pietà di Beniamino, loro fratello, e dissero: «Oggi è stata soppressa una tribù d’Israele.

And the sons of Israel repent concerning Benjamin their brother, and say, `There hath been to-day cut off one tribe from Israel,

7 C ome faremo a procurare delle donne ai superstiti, visto che abbiamo giurato nel nome del Signore di non dar loro in moglie nessuna delle nostre figlie?»

what do we do for them -- for those who are left -- for wives, and we -- we have sworn by Jehovah not to give to them of our daughters for wives?'

8 D issero dunque: «Qual è fra le tribù d’Israele quella che non è salita in presenza del Signore a Mispa?» Ecco che nessuno di Iabes in Galaad era venuto all’accampamento, all’assemblea;

And they say, `Who is one out of the tribes of Israel who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh?' and lo, none hath come in unto the camp from Jabesh-Gilead -- unto the assembly.

9 p oiché, fatto il censimento del popolo, si trovò che là non vi era nessuno degli abitanti di Iabes in Galaad.

And the people numbered themselves, and lo, there is not there a man of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead.

10 A llora la comunità mandò là dodicimila uomini fra i più valorosi e diede loro quest’ordine: «Andate e passate a fil di spada gli abitanti di Iabes in Galaad, con le donne e i bambini.

And the company send there twelve thousand men of the sons of valour, and command them, saying, `Go -- and ye have smitten the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead by the mouth of the sword, even the women and the infants.

11 F arete questo: voterete allo sterminio ogni maschio e ogni donna che ha avuto relazioni carnali con un uomo».

And this the thing which ye do; every male, and every woman knowing the lying of a male, ye devote.'

12 Q uelli trovarono, fra gli abitanti di Iabes in Galaad, quattrocento fanciulle che non avevano avuto relazioni carnali con uomini e le condussero all’accampamento, a Silo, che è nel paese di Canaan.

And they find out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead four hundred young women, virgins, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them in unto the camp at Shiloh, which in the land of Canaan.

13 T utta la comunità inviò dei messaggeri per parlare ai figli di Beniamino che erano al masso di Rimmon per annunciare loro la pace.

And all the company send, and speak, unto the sons of Benjamin who in the rock Rimmon, and proclaim to them peace;

14 A llora i Beniaminiti tornarono e furono loro date le donne di Iabes in Galaad a cui era stata risparmiata la vita; ma non ve ne fu abbastanza per tutti.

and Benjamin turneth back at that time, and they give to them the women whom they have kept alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead, and they have not found for them so.

15 I l popolo dunque ebbe pietà di Beniamino, perché il Signore aveva aperto una breccia fra le tribù d’Israele.

And the people repented concerning Benjamin, for Jehovah had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.

16 G li anziani della comunità dissero: «Come faremo a procurare delle donne ai superstiti, visto che le donne beniaminite sono state distrutte?»

And the elders of the company say, `What do we do to the remnant for wives -- for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?'

17 P oi dissero: «Quelli che sono scampati rimangano in possesso di ciò che apparteneva a Beniamino, affinché non sia soppressa una tribù in Israele.

And they say, `A possession of an escaped party to Benjamin, and a tribe is not blotted out from Israel;

18 M a noi non possiamo dar loro le nostre figlie in moglie». Poiché i figli d’Israele avevano giurato, dicendo: «Maledetto chi darà una moglie a Beniamino!»

and we -- we are not able to give to them wives out of our daughters, for the sons of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed he who is giving a wife to Benjamin.'

19 A llora dissero: «Ecco, ogni anno si fa una festa in onore del Signore a Silo, che è a nord di Betel, a oriente della strada che sale da Betel a Sichem e a mezzogiorno di Lebna».

And they say, `Lo, a festival of Jehovah in Shiloh, from time to time, which on the north of Beth-El, at the rising of the sun, by the highway which is going up from Beth-El to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.'

20 D iedero quest’ordine ai figli di Beniamino: «Andate e fate un’imboscata nelle vigne;

And they command the sons of Benjamin, saying, `Go -- and ye have laid wait in the vineyards,

21 s tate attenti, e quando le figlie di Silo usciranno per danzare in gruppo, sbucherete dalle vigne; ciascuno rapirà una delle figlie di Silo per prenderla in moglie e ve ne andrete nel paese di Beniamino.

and have seen, and lo, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances -- then ye have gone out from the vineyards, and caught for you each his wife out of the daughters of Shiloh, and gone to the land of Benjamin;

22 Q uando i loro padri o i loro fratelli verranno a lamentarsi con noi, noi diremo loro: “Datecele, per favore, poiché in questa guerra non abbiamo preso una donna per uno. Inoltre non siete voi che gliele avete date; in quel caso, voi sareste colpevoli”».

and it hath been, when their fathers or their brethren come in to plead unto us, that we have said unto them, Favour us them, for we have not taken each his wife in battle, for ye -- ye have not given to them at this time ye are guilty.'

23 I figli di Beniamino fecero a quel modo: si presero delle mogli, secondo il loro numero, fra le danzatrici; le rapirono, poi partirono e tornarono nella loro eredità, ricostruirono le città e vi stabilirono la loro dimora.

And the sons of Benjamin do so, and take women according to their number, out of the dancers whom they have taken violently away; and they go, and turn back unto their inheritance, and build the cities, and dwell in them.

24 I n quel medesimo tempo, i figli d’Israele se ne andarono di là e tornarono ciascuno nella sua tribù e nella sua famiglia, ciascuno nel luogo della sua eredità.

And the sons of Israel go up and down thence at that time, each to his tribe, and to his family; and they go out thence each to his inheritance.

25 I n quel tempo non c’era re in Israele; ognuno faceva quello che gli pareva meglio.

In those days there is no king in Israel; each doth that which is right in his own eyes.
