1 P arola del Signore che fu rivolta a Geremia riguardo alle nazioni.

That which hath been the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations,

2 R iguardo all’Egitto. Circa l’esercito del faraone Neco, re d’Egitto, che era presso il fiume Eufrate a Carchemis, e che Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, sconfisse il quarto anno di Ioiachim, figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda.

For Egypt, concerning the force of Pharaoh-Necho king of Egypt, that hath been by the river Phrat, in Carchemish, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath smitten, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:

3 « Preparate lo scudo grande e quello leggero, avvicinatevi per la battaglia!

`Set ye in array shield and buckler, And draw nigh to battle.

4 A ttaccate i cavalli; cavalieri, montate! Presentatevi con gli elmi in capo; lucidate le lance, indossate le corazze!

Gird the horses, and go up, ye horsemen, And station yourselves with helmets, Polish the javelins, put on the coats of mail.

5 P erché li vedo sbigottiti, lanciati in fuga? I loro prodi sono sconfitti, si danno alla fuga senza volgersi indietro; tutto intorno è terrore», dice il Signore.

Wherefore have I seen them dismayed -- They are turned backward, And their mighty ones are beaten down, And a refuge they have fled, and not turned the face? Fear round about -- an affirmation of Jehovah.

6 « Il veloce non fugga, il prode non scampi! Al settentrione, presso il fiume Eufrate, vacillano e cadono.

The swift do not flee, nor do the mighty escape, Northward, by the side of the river Phrat, They have stumbled and fallen.

7 C hi è colui che sale come il Nilo, le cui acque si agitano come quelle dei fiumi?

Who is this? as a flood he cometh up, As rivers do his waters shake themselves!

8 È l’Egitto, che sale come il Nilo, le cui acque si agitano come quelle dei fiumi. Egli dice: “Io salirò, ricoprirò la terra, distruggerò le città e i loro abitanti”.

Egypt, as a flood cometh up, And as rivers the waters shake themselves. And he saith, I go up; I cover the land, I destroy the city and the inhabitants in it.

9 A ll’assalto, cavalli! Al galoppo, carri! Si facciano avanti i prodi, quelli d’Etiopia e di Put che portano lo scudo, quelli di Lud che maneggiano e tendono l’arco.

Go up, ye horses; and boast yourselves, ye chariots, And go forth, ye mighty, Cush and Phut handling the shield, And Lud handling -- treading the bow.

10 Q uesto giorno, per il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, è giorno di vendetta, in cui si vendica dei suoi nemici. La spada divorerà, si sazierà, si ubriacherà del loro sangue; poiché il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, immola le vittime nel paese del settentrione, presso il fiume Eufrate.

And that day to the Lord Jehovah of Hosts A day of vengeance, To be avenged of His adversaries, And the sword hath devoured, and been satisfied, And it hath been watered from their blood, For a sacrifice to the Lord Jehovah of Hosts, In the land of the north, by the river Phrat.

11 S ali a Galaad, prendi del balsamo, o vergine, figlia d’Egitto! Invano moltiplichi i rimedi; non c’è medicazione che valga per te.

Go up to Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt, In vain thou hast multiplied medicines, Healing there is none for thee.

12 L e nazioni odono la tua infamia e la terra è piena del tuo grido; poiché il prode vacilla appoggiandosi al prode, tutti e due cadono assieme».

Nations have heard of thy shame, And thy cry hath filled the land, For the mighty on the mighty did stumble, Together they have fallen -- both of them!'

13 L a parola che il Signore rivolse al profeta Geremia sulla venuta di Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, per colpire il paese d’Egitto.

The word that Jehovah hath spoken unto Jeremiah the prophet concerning the coming in of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, to smite the land of Egypt:

14 « Annunciatelo in Egitto, banditelo a Migdol, banditelo a Nof e a Tapanes! Dite: “Àlzati, prepàrati, poiché la spada divora tutto ciò che ti circonda”.

`Declare ye in Egypt, and sound in Migdol, Yea, sound in Noph, and in Tahpanhes say: Station thyself, yea, prepare for thee, For a sword hath devoured around thee,

15 P erché i tuoi prodi sono atterrati? Non possono resistere, perché il Signore li abbatte.

Wherefore hath thy bull been swept away? He hath not stood, because Jehovah thrust him away.

16 E gli ne fa vacillare molti; essi cadono l’uno sopra l’altro e dicono: “Andiamo, torniamo al nostro popolo e al nostro paese natìo, lontani dalla spada micidiale”.

He hath multiplied the stumbling, Yea one hath fallen upon his neighbour, And they say: Rise, and we turn back to our people, And unto the land of our birth, Because of the oppressing sword.

17 L à essi gridano: “Il faraone, re d’Egitto, non è che un vano rumore, ha lasciato passare il tempo fissato”.

They have cried there: Pharaoh king of Egypt a desolation, Passed by hath the appointed time.

18 C om’è vero che io vivo», dice il re che si chiama il Signore degli eserciti, «il nemico verrà come un Tabor, fra le montagne, come un Carmelo che avanza sul mare.

I live -- an affirmation of the King, Jehovah of Hosts His name, Surely as Tabor among mountains, And as Carmel by the sea -- he cometh in,

19 O figlia che abiti l’Egitto, fa’ il tuo bagaglio per la deportazione! Poiché Nof diventerà una desolazione, sarà devastata, nessuno vi abiterà più.

Goods for removal make for thee, O inhabitant, daughter of Egypt, For Noph becometh a desolation, And hath been burnt up, without inhabitant.

20 L ’Egitto è una giovenca bellissima, ma viene un tafano, viene dal settentrione.

A heifer very fair Egypt, Rending from the north doth come into her.

21 A nche i mercenari che sono in mezzo all’Egitto sono come vitelli da ingrasso; anch’essi volgono il dorso, fuggono tutti assieme, non resistono; poiché piomba su di loro il giorno della loro calamità, il tempo del loro castigo.

Even her hired ones in her midst as calves of the stall, For even they have turned, They have fled together, they have not stood, For the day of their calamity hath come on them, The time of their inspection.

22 L a sua voce giunge come quella di un serpente; poiché avanzano con un esercito, marciano contro di lui con asce, come tanti tagliaboschi.

Its voice as a serpent goeth on, For with a force they go, And with axes they have come in to her, As hewers of trees.

23 E ssi abbattono la sua foresta», dice il Signore, «sebbene sia impenetrabile, perché quelli sono più numerosi delle locuste, non si possono contare.

They have cut down her forest, An affirmation of Jehovah -- for it is not searched, For they have been more than the grasshopper, And they have no numbering.

24 L a figlia dell’Egitto è coperta di vergogna, è data in mano del popolo del settentrione».

Ashamed hath been the daughter of Egypt, She hath been given into the hand of the people of the north.

25 I l Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele, dice: «Ecco, io punirò Amon di No, il faraone, l’Egitto, i suoi dèi, i suoi re, il faraone e quelli che confidano in lui;

Said hath Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: Lo, I am seeing after Amon of No, And after Pharaoh, and after Egypt, And after her gods, and after her kings, And after Pharaoh, and after those trusting in him,

26 l i darò nelle mani di quelli che cercano la loro vita, nelle mani di Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, e nelle mani dei suoi servitori; ma, dopo questo, l’Egitto sarà abitato come ai giorni di prima», dice il Signore.

And I have given them into the hand of those seeking their life, And into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, And into the hand of his servants, And afterwards it is inhabited, As days of old -- an affirmation of Jehovah.

27 « Tu dunque non temere, Giacobbe mio servitore, non ti sgomentare, Israele! Poiché, ecco, io ti salverò dal lontano paese, salverò la tua discendenza dalla terra della sua deportazione. Giacobbe ritornerà, sarà in riposo, sarà tranquillo; nessuno più lo spaventerà.

And thou, thou dost not fear, my servant Jacob, Nor thou dismayed, O Israel, For lo, I am saving thee from afar, And thy seed from the land of their captivity, And Jacob hath turned back, And hath been at rest, and been at ease, And there is none disturbing.

28 T u non temere, Giacobbe, mio servitore», dice il Signore; «poiché io sono con te, io annienterò tutte le nazioni fra le quali ti ho disperso, ma non annienterò te; però ti castigherò con giusta misura e non ti lascerò del tutto impunito».

Thou, thou dost not fear, My servant Jacob, An affirmation of Jehovah -- for with thee I, For I make an end of all the nations Whither I have driven thee, And of thee I do not make an end, And I have reproved thee in judgment, And do not entirely acquit thee!'
