1 « Ascolta, Israele! Oggi tu stai per passare il Giordano per andare a impadronirti di nazioni più grandi e più potenti di te, di città grandi e fortificate fino al cielo,

`Hear, Israel, thou art passing over to-day the Jordan, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself; cities great and fenced in the heavens;

2 d i un popolo grande e alto di statura: dei figli degli Anachiti che tu conosci e dei quali hai sentito dire: “Chi mai può resistere ai figli di Anac?”

a people great and tall, sons of Anakim, whom thou -- thou hast known, (and thou -- thou hast heard: Who doth station himself before sons of Anak?)

3 S appi dunque oggi che il Signore, il tuo Dio, è colui che marcerà alla tua testa come un fuoco che divora; egli li distruggerà e li abbatterà davanti a te; tu li scaccerai e li farai perire in un attimo, come il Signore ti ha detto.

and thou hast known to-day, that Jehovah thy God He who is passing over before thee -- a fire consuming; He doth destroy them, and He doth humble them before thee, and thou hast dispossessed them, and destroyed them hastily, as Jehovah hath spoken to thee.

4 Q uando il Signore, il tuo Dio, li avrà scacciati davanti a te, non dire nel tuo cuore: “È per la mia giustizia che il Signore mi ha fatto entrare in possesso di questo paese”; poiché il Signore scaccia davanti a te queste nazioni, per la loro malvagità.

`Thou dost not speak in thy heart (in Jehovah thy God's driving them away from before thee), saying, For my righteousness hath Jehovah brought me in to possess this land, seeing for the wickedness of these nations is Jehovah dispossessing them from thy presence;

5 N o, tu non entri in possesso del loro paese per la tua giustizia, né per la rettitudine del tuo cuore; ma il Signore, il tuo Dio, sta per scacciare quelle nazioni davanti a te per la loro malvagità e per mantenere la parola giurata ai tuoi padri, ad Abraamo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe.

not for thy righteousness, and for the uprightness of thy heart, art thou going in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations is Jehovah thy God dispossessing them from before thee; and in order to establish the word which Jehovah hath sworn to thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob;

6 N on è dunque per la tua giustizia che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà il possesso di questo buon paese; perché sei un popolo dal collo duro.

and thou hast known, that not for thy righteousness is Jehovah thy God giving to thee this good land to possess it, for a people stiff of neck thou.

7 R icòrdati, non dimenticare come hai provocato all’ira il Signore, il tuo Dio, nel deserto. Dal giorno che uscisti dal paese d’Egitto, fino al vostro arrivo in questo luogo, siete stati ribelli al Signore.

`Remember -- do not forget -- that which thou hast made Jehovah thy God wroth in the wilderness; even from the day that thou hast come out of the land of Egypt till your coming in unto this place rebels ye have been with Jehovah;

8 A nche a Oreb provocaste all’ira il Signore; il Signore si adirò contro di voi, al punto da volervi distruggere.

even in Horeb ye have made Jehovah wroth, and Jehovah sheweth Himself angry against you -- to destroy you.

9 Q uando io salii sul monte a prendere le tavole di pietra, le tavole del patto che il Signore aveva stipulato con voi, io rimasi sul monte quaranta giorni e quaranta notti, senza mangiare pane né bere acqua;

`In my going up into the mount to receive the tables of stone (tables of the covenant which Jehovah hath made with you), and I abide in the mount forty days and forty nights; bread I have not eaten, and water I have not drunk;

10 i l Signore mi diede le due tavole di pietra, scritte con il dito di Dio, sulle quali stavano tutte le parole che il Signore vi aveva dette sul monte, parlandovi dal fuoco, il giorno dell’assemblea.

and Jehovah giveth unto me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God, and on them according to all the words which Jehovah hath spoken with you in the mount, out of the midst of the fire, in the day of the assembly.

11 F u alla fine dei quaranta giorni e delle quaranta notti che il Signore mi diede le due tavole di pietra, le tavole del patto.

`And it cometh to pass, at the end of forty days and forty nights, Jehovah hath given unto me the two tables of stone -- tables of the covenant,

12 P oi il Signore mi disse: “Muoviti, scendi presto di qui, perché il tuo popolo che hai fatto uscire dall’Egitto si è corrotto; hanno ben presto lasciato la via che io avevo loro ordinato di seguire; si sono fatti un’immagine di metallo fuso”.

and Jehovah saith unto me, Rise, go down, hasten from this, for thy people hath done corruptly, whom thou hast brought out of Egypt; they have turned aside hastily out of the way which I have commanded them -- they have made to themselves a molten thing!

13 I l Signore mi parlò ancora e disse: “Io l’ho visto questo popolo; è un popolo dal collo duro;

`And Jehovah speaketh unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and lo, a people stiff of neck it;

14 l asciami fare; io li distruggerò e cancellerò il loro nome sotto il cielo e farò di te una nazione più potente e più grande di loro”.

desist from Me, and I destroy them, and blot out their name from under the heavens, and I make thee become a nation more mighty and numerous than it.

15 C osì io mi volsi e scesi dal monte che era tutto in fiamme; tenevo nelle mie mani le due tavole del patto.

`And I turn, and come down from the mount, and the mount is burning with fire, and the two tables of the covenant on my two hands,

16 G uardai, e vidi che avevate peccato contro il Signore Dio vostro; vi eravate fatti un vitello di metallo fuso, avevate ben presto lasciato la via che il Signore vi aveva ordinato di seguire.

and I see, and lo, ye have sinned against Jehovah your God; ye have made to yourselves a molten calf; ye have turned aside hastily out of the way which Jehovah hath commanded you.

17 P resi le due tavole, le gettai dalle mie mani e le spezzai sotto i vostri occhi.

`And I lay hold on the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and break them before your eyes,

18 P oi mi prostrai davanti al Signore, come avevo fatto la prima volta, per quaranta giorni e per quaranta notti; non mangiai pane e non bevvi acqua, a causa del gran peccato che avevate commesso facendo ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, per irritarlo.

and I throw myself before Jehovah, as at first, forty days and forty nights; bread I have not eaten, and water I have not drunk, because of all your sins which ye have sinned, by doing the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, to make Him angry.

19 P oiché io avevo paura davanti all’ira e al furore da cui il Signore era invaso contro di voi, al punto di volervi distruggere. Ma il Signore mi esaudì anche quella volta.

`For I have been afraid because of the anger and the fury with which Jehovah hath been wroth against you, to destroy you; and Jehovah doth hearken unto me also at this time.

20 I l Signore si adirò fortemente anche contro Aaronne, al punto di volerlo far perire; io pregai in quell’occasione anche per Aaronne.

`And with Aaron hath Jehovah shewed himself very angry, to destroy him, and I pray also for Aaron at that time;

21 P oi presi l’oggetto del vostro delitto, il vitello che avevate fatto, lo gettai nel fuoco, lo frantumai riducendolo in polvere, e buttai quella polvere nel torrente che scende dal monte.

and your sin, which ye have made -- the calf -- I have taken, and I burn it with fire, and beat it, grinding well till that it small as dust, and I cast its dust unto the brook which is going down out of the mount.

22 A nche a Tabera, a Massa e a Chibrot-Attaava voi irritaste il Signore.

`And in Taberah, and in Massah, and in Kibroth-Hattaavah, ye have been making Jehovah wroth:

23 Q uando il Signore volle farvi partire da Cades-Barnea dicendo: “Salite e impossessatevi del paese che io vi do”, voi vi ribellaste all’ordine del Signore vostro Dio, non aveste fede in lui e non ubbidiste alla sua voce.

and in Jehovah's sending you from Kadesh-Barnea, saying, Go up, and possess the land which I have given to you, then ye provoke the mouth of Jehovah your God, and have not given credence to Him, nor hearkened to His voice;

24 S iete stati ribelli al Signore dal giorno che vi conobbi.

rebels ye have been with Jehovah from the day of my knowing you.

25 I o rimasi dunque così prostrato davanti al Signore quei quaranta giorni e quelle quaranta notti, perché il Signore aveva detto di volervi distruggere.

`And I throw myself before Jehovah, the forty days and the forty nights, as I had thrown myself, for Jehovah hath said -- to destroy you;

26 P regai il Signore e dissi: “Signore, Dio, non distruggere il tuo popolo, la tua eredità, che hai redento nella tua grandezza, che hai fatto uscire dall’Egitto con mano potente.

and I pray unto Jehovah, and say, Lord Jehovah, destroy not Thy people, and Thine inheritance, whom Thou hast ransomed in Thy greatness; whom Thou hast brought out of Egypt with a strong hand;

27 R icòrdati dei tuoi servi, Abraamo, Isacco e Giacobbe; non guardare alla caparbietà di questo popolo, alla sua malvagità e al suo peccato,

be mindful of Thy servants, of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, turn not unto the stiffness of this people, and unto its wickedness, and unto its sin;

28 a ffinché il paese dal quale ci hai fatti uscire non dica: ‘Il Signore non era capace d’introdurli nella terra che aveva loro promessa e, siccome li odiava, li ha fatti uscire di qui per farli morire nel deserto’.

lest the land say from which Thou hast brought us out, Because of Jehovah's want of ability to bring them in unto the land of which He hath spoken to them, and because of His hating them, He brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness;

29 N ondimeno, essi sono il tuo popolo, la tua eredità, che facesti uscire dall’Egitto con la tua grande potenza e con il tuo braccio steso”.

and they Thy people, and Thine inheritance, whom Thou hast brought out by Thy great power, and by Thy stretched-out arm!
