1 P oi gridò ad alta voce alle mie orecchie e disse: «Fate avvicinare quelli che debbono punire la città, e ciascuno abbia in mano la sua arma di distruzione».

And He crieth in mine ears -- a loud voice -- saying, `Drawn near have inspectors of the city, and each his destroying weapon in his hand.'

2 E d ecco venire dal lato della porta superiore che guarda verso settentrione sei uomini, ognuno dei quali aveva in mano la sua arma di distruzione. In mezzo a loro c’era un uomo vestito di lino, che aveva un corno da scrivano alla cintura; essi vennero a mettersi di fianco all’altare di bronzo.

And lo, six men are coming from the way of the upper gate, that is facing the north, and each his slaughter-weapon in his hand, and one man in their midst is clothed with linen, and a scribe's inkhorn at his loins, and they come in, and stand near the brazen altar.

3 E la gloria del Dio d’Israele si alzò dal cherubino sul quale stava, e andò verso la soglia della casa. Il Signore chiamò l’uomo vestito di lino, che aveva il calamaio da scrivano alla cintura, e gli disse:

And the honour of the God of Israel hath gone up from off the cherub, on which it hath been, unto the threshold of the house.

4 « Passa in mezzo alla città, in mezzo a Gerusalemme, e fa’ un segno sulla fronte degli uomini che sospirano e gemono per tutte le abominazioni che si commettono in mezzo a lei».

And He calleth unto the man who is clothed with linen, who hath the scribe's inkhorn at his loins, and Jehovah saith unto him, `Pass on into the midst of the city, into the midst of Jerusalem, and thou hast made a mark on the foreheads of the men who are sighing and who are groaning for all the abominations that are done in its midst.'

5 A gli altri, in modo che io sentissi, disse: «Passate per la città dietro a lui e colpite; il vostro occhio sia senza pietà, e non abbiate compassione.

And to the others he said in mine ears, `Pass on into the city after him, and smite; your eye doth not pity, nor do ye spare;

6 U ccidete, sterminate vecchi, giovani, vergini, bambini e donne, ma non vi avvicinate ad alcuno che porti il segno; cominciate dal mio santuario». Essi cominciarono da quegli anziani che stavano davanti alla casa.

aged, young man, and virgin, and infant, and women, ye do slay -- to destruction; and against any man on whom the mark ye do not go nigh, and from My sanctuary ye begin.'

7 P oi egli disse loro: «Contaminate la casa e riempite di cadaveri i cortili! Uscite!» Quelli uscirono e andarono colpendo per la città.

And they begin among the aged men who before the house, and He saith unto them, `Defile the house, and fill the courts with the wounded, go forth.' And they have gone forth and have smitten in the city.

8 M entre essi colpivano e io ero rimasto solo, caddi faccia a terra e gridai: «Ahimè, Signore, Dio, distruggerai forse tutto ciò che è rimasto d’Israele, riversando il tuo furore su Gerusalemme?»

And it cometh to pass, as they are smiting, and I -- I am left -- that I fall on my face, and cry, and say, `Ah, Lord Jehovah, art Thou destroying all the remnant of Israel, in Thy pouring out Thy wrath on Jerusalem?'

9 E gli mi rispose: «L’iniquità della casa d’Israele e di Giuda è troppo grande; il paese è pieno di sangue e la città è piena d’ingiustizie, poiché dicono: “Il Signore ha abbandonato il paese, il Signore non vede nulla”.

And He saith unto me, `The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah very very great, and the land is full of blood, and the city hath been full of perverseness, for they have said: Jehovah hath forsaken the land, and Jehovah is not seeing.

10 P erciò, anche il mio occhio sarà senza pietà, io non avrò compassione, e farò ricadere sul loro capo la loro condotta».

And I also, Mine eye doth not pity, nor do I spare; their way on their own head I have put.'

11 E d ecco, l’uomo vestito di lino, che aveva il calamaio da scrivano alla cintura, venne a fare il suo rapporto e disse: «Ho fatto come tu mi hai comandato».

And lo, the man clothed with linen, at whose loins the inkhorn, is bringing back word, saying, `I have done as Thou hast commanded me.'
