1 G esù ricominciò a parlare loro in parabole, dicendo:

And Jesus answering, again spake to them in similes, saying,

2 « Il regno dei cieli può essere paragonato ad un re, il quale fece le nozze di suo figlio.

`The reign of the heavens was likened to a man, a king, who made marriage-feasts for his son,

3 M andò i suoi servi a chiamare gli invitati alle nozze; ma questi non vollero venire.

and he sent forth his servants to call those having been called to the marriage-feasts, and they were not willing to come.

4 M andò una seconda volta altri servi, dicendo: “Dite agli invitati: ‘Io ho preparato il mio pranzo; i miei buoi e i miei animali ingrassati sono ammazzati; tutto è pronto; venite alle nozze’”.

`Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Say to those who have been called: Lo, my dinner I prepared, my oxen and the fatlings have been killed, and all things ready, come ye to the marriage-feasts;

5 M a quelli, non curandosene, se ne andarono, chi al suo campo, chi al suo commercio;

and they, having disregarded, went away, the one to his own field, and the other to his merchandise;

6 a ltri poi presero i suoi servi, li maltrattarono e li uccisero.

and the rest, having laid hold on his servants, did insult and slay.

7 A llora il re si adirò, mandò le sue truppe a sterminare quegli omicidi e a bruciare la loro città.

`And the king having heard, was wroth, and having sent forth his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers, and their city he set on fire;

8 Q uindi disse ai suoi servi: “Le nozze sono pronte, ma gli invitati non ne erano degni.

then saith he to his servants, The marriage-feast indeed is ready, and those called were not worthy,

9 A ndate dunque ai crocicchi delle strade e chiamate alle nozze quanti troverete”.

be going, then, on to the cross-ways, and as many as ye may find, call ye to the marriage-feasts.

10 E quei servi, usciti per le strade, radunarono tutti quelli che trovarono, cattivi e buoni; e la sala delle nozze fu piena di commensali.

`And those servants, having gone forth to the ways, did gather all, as many as they found, both bad and good, and the marriage-feast apartment was filled with those reclining.

11 O ra il re entrò per vedere quelli che erano a tavola e notò là un uomo che non aveva l’abito di nozze.

`And the king having come in to view those reclining, saw there a man not clothed with clothing of the marriage-feast,

12 E gli disse: “Amico, come sei entrato qui senza avere un abito di nozze?” E costui rimase con la bocca chiusa.

and he saith to him, Comrade, how didst thou come in hither, not having clothing of the marriage-feast? and he was speechless.

13 A llora il re disse ai servitori: “Legatelo mani e piedi e gettatelo nelle tenebre di fuori. Lì ci sarà pianto e stridor di denti”.

`Then said the king to the ministrants, Having bound his feet and hands, take him up and cast forth to the outer darkness, there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth;

14 P oiché molti sono chiamati, ma pochi eletti». Il tributo a Cesare

for many are called, and few chosen.'

15 A llora i farisei si ritirarono e tennero consiglio per vedere di coglierlo in fallo nelle sue parole.

Then the Pharisees having gone, took counsel how they might ensnare him in words,

16 E gli mandarono i loro discepoli con gli erodiani a dirgli: «Maestro, noi sappiamo che sei sincero e insegni la via di Dio secondo verità, e non hai riguardi per nessuno perché non badi all’apparenza delle persone.

and they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou art true, and the way of God in truth thou dost teach, and thou art not caring for any one, for thou dost not look to the face of men;

17 D icci dunque: che te ne pare? È lecito, o no, pagare il tributo a Cesare?»

tell us, therefore, what dost thou think? is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?'

18 M a Gesù, conoscendo la loro malizia, disse: «Perché mi tentate, ipocriti?

And Jesus having known their wickedness, said, `Why me do ye tempt, hypocrites?

19 M ostratemi la moneta del tributo». Ed essi gli porsero un denaro.

show me the tribute-coin?' and they brought to him a denary;

20 E d egli domandò loro: «Di chi è questa effigie e questa iscrizione?»

and he saith to them, `Whose this image and the inscription?'

21 G li risposero: «Di Cesare». E Gesù disse loro: «Rendete dunque a Cesare quello che è di Cesare, e a Dio quello che è di Dio».

they say to him, `Caesar's;' then saith he to them, `Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'

22 E d essi, udito ciò, si stupirono e, lasciatolo, se ne andarono. Dibattito sulla risurrezione

and having heard they wondered, and having left him they went away.

23 I n quello stesso giorno vennero a lui dei sadducei, i quali dicono che non vi è risurrezione, e gli domandarono:

In that day there came near to him Sadducees, who are saying there is not a rising again, and they questioned him, saying,

24 « Maestro, Mosè ha detto: “Se uno muore senza figli, il fratello suo sposi la moglie di lui e dia una discendenza a suo fratello”.

`Teacher, Moses said, If any one may die not having children, his brother shall marry his wife, and shall raise up seed to his brother.

25 V i erano tra di noi sette fratelli; il primo, ammogliatosi, morì; e, non avendo prole, lasciò sua moglie a suo fratello.

`And there were with us seven brothers, and the first having married did die, and not having seed, he left his wife to his brother;

26 L o stesso fece pure il secondo, poi il terzo, fino al settimo.

in like manner also the second, and the third, unto the seventh,

27 I nfine, dopo tutti, morì la donna.

and last of all died also the woman;

28 A lla risurrezione, dunque, di quale dei sette sarà ella moglie? Poiché tutti l’hanno avuta».

therefore in the rising again, of which of the seven shall she be wife -- for all had her?'

29 M a Gesù rispose loro: «Voi errate, perché non conoscete le Scritture, né la potenza di Dio.

And Jesus answering said to them, `Ye go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God;

30 P erché alla risurrezione non si prende né si dà moglie; ma i risorti sono come angeli nei cieli.

for in the rising again they do not marry, nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers of God in heaven.

31 Q uanto poi alla risurrezione dei morti, non avete letto quello che vi è stato detto da Dio:

`And concerning the rising again of the dead, did ye not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,

32 “ Io sono il Dio di Abraamo, il Dio di Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe” ? Egli non è il Dio dei morti, ma dei vivi».

I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not a God of dead men, but of living.'

33 E la folla, udite queste cose, si stupiva del suo insegnamento. Il gran comandamento

And having heard, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching;

34 I farisei, udito che egli aveva chiuso la bocca ai sadducei, si radunarono;

and the Pharisees, having heard that he did silence the Sadducees, were gathered together unto him;

35 e uno di loro, {dottore della legge,} gli fece una domanda per metterlo alla prova:

and one of them, a lawyer, did question, tempting him, and saying,

36 « Maestro, qual è, nella legge, il gran comandamento?»

`Teacher, which the great command in the Law?'

37 g li disse: « “Ama il Signore Dio tuo con tutto il tuo cuore, con tutta la tua anima e con tutta la tua mente”.

And Jesus said to him, `Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding --

38 Q uesto è il grande e il primo comandamento.

this is a first and great command;

39 I l secondo, simile a questo, è: “Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso”.

and the second like to it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;

40 D a questi due comandamenti dipendono tutta la legge e i profeti». Gesù interroga i farisei

on these -- the two commands -- all the law and the prophets do hang.'

41 E ssendo i farisei riuniti, Gesù li interrogò,

And the Pharisees having been gathered together, Jesus did question them,

42 d icendo: «Che cosa pensate del Cristo? Di chi è figlio?» Essi gli risposero: «Di Davide».

saying, `What do ye think concerning the Christ? of whom is he son?' They say to him, `Of David.'

43 E d egli a loro: «Come mai dunque Davide, ispirato dallo Spirito, lo chiama Signore, dicendo:

He saith to them, `How then doth David in the Spirit call him lord, saying,

44 “ Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: ‘ Siedi alla mia destra finché io abbia messo i tuoi nemici sotto i tuoi piedi’” ?

The Lord said to my lord, Sit at my right hand, till I may make thine enemies thy footstool?

45 S e dunque Davide lo chiama Signore, come può essere suo figlio?»

If then David doth call him lord, how is he his son?'

46 E nessuno poteva replicargli parola; da quel giorno nessuno ardì più interrogarlo.

And no one was able to answer him a word, nor durst any from that day question him any more.
