1 ¶ And Jesus answered and spoke unto them again by parables and said,
And Jesus answering, again spake to them in similes, saying,
2 T he kingdom of the heavens is like unto a certain man, a king, who made a marriage feast for his son
`The reign of the heavens was likened to a man, a king, who made marriage-feasts for his son,
3 a nd sent forth his slaves to call those that were invited to the wedding, and they would not come.
and he sent forth his servants to call those having been called to the marriage-feasts, and they were not willing to come.
4 A gain, he sent forth other slaves, saying, Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my bulls and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready; come unto the marriage.
`Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Say to those who have been called: Lo, my dinner I prepared, my oxen and the fatlings have been killed, and all things ready, come ye to the marriage-feasts;
5 B ut they made light of it and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise,
and they, having disregarded, went away, the one to his own field, and the other to his merchandise;
6 a nd the others took his slaves and entreated them spitefully and slew them.
and the rest, having laid hold on his servants, did insult and slay.
7 B ut when the king heard of this, he became angry and sent forth his armies and destroyed those murderers and burned up their city.
`And the king having heard, was wroth, and having sent forth his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers, and their city he set on fire;
8 T hen he said to his slaves, The wedding is ready, but those who were called were not worthy.
then saith he to his servants, The marriage-feast indeed is ready, and those called were not worthy,
9 G o ye therefore into the entrances of the highways and call as many as ye shall find to the marriage.
be going, then, on to the cross-ways, and as many as ye may find, call ye to the marriage-feasts.
10 S o those slaves went out into the highways and gathered together everyone that they found, both bad and good; and the wedding was filled with guests.
`And those servants, having gone forth to the ways, did gather all, as many as they found, both bad and good, and the marriage-feast apartment was filled with those reclining.
11 A nd when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who did not have on a wedding garment,
`And the king having come in to view those reclining, saw there a man not clothed with clothing of the marriage-feast,
12 a nd he said unto him, Friend, how didst thou come in here not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
and he saith to him, Comrade, how didst thou come in hither, not having clothing of the marriage-feast? and he was speechless.
13 T hen the king said to the slaves, Bind him hand and foot and take him away and cast him into the darkness outside; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
`Then said the king to the ministrants, Having bound his feet and hands, take him up and cast forth to the outer darkness, there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth;
14 F or many are called, but few are chosen.
for many are called, and few chosen.'
15 ¶ Then the Pharisees left and took counsel how they might entangle him in his word.
Then the Pharisees having gone, took counsel how they might ensnare him in words,
16 A nd they sent out unto him their disciples with those of Herod, saying, Master, we know that thou art a lover of truth and teachest the way of God with truth and that thou takest care for no man, for thou art no respecter of persons of men.
and they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou art true, and the way of God in truth thou dost teach, and thou art not caring for any one, for thou dost not look to the face of men;
17 T ell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar or not?
tell us, therefore, what dost thou think? is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?'
18 B ut Jesus perceived their wickedness and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
And Jesus having known their wickedness, said, `Why me do ye tempt, hypocrites?
19 S how me the coin of the tribute. And they presented unto him a denarius.
show me the tribute-coin?' and they brought to him a denary;
20 A nd he said unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
and he saith to them, `Whose this image and the inscription?'
21 T hey say unto him, Caesar’s. Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.
they say to him, `Caesar's;' then saith he to them, `Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'
22 W hen they had heard these words, they marvelled and left him and went away.
and having heard they wondered, and having left him they went away.
23 ¶ The same day the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
In that day there came near to him Sadducees, who are saying there is not a rising again, and they questioned him, saying,
24 s aying, Master, Moses said, If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up seed unto his brother.
`Teacher, Moses said, If any one may die not having children, his brother shall marry his wife, and shall raise up seed to his brother.
25 N ow there were with us seven brothers, and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no seed, left his wife unto his brother;
`And there were with us seven brothers, and the first having married did die, and not having seed, he left his wife to his brother;
26 l ikewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
in like manner also the second, and the third, unto the seventh,
27 A nd last of all the woman died also.
and last of all died also the woman;
28 T herefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
therefore in the rising again, of which of the seven shall she be wife -- for all had her?'
29 T hen Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God.
And Jesus answering said to them, `Ye go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God;
30 F or in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
for in the rising again they do not marry, nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers of God in heaven.
31 B ut concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which is spoken unto you by God, who saith,
`And concerning the rising again of the dead, did ye not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,
32 I AM the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not a God of dead men, but of living.'
33 A nd when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
And having heard, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching;
34 ¶ Then the Pharisees, hearing that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered together.
and the Pharisees, having heard that he did silence the Sadducees, were gathered together unto him;
35 A nd one of them, who was an interpreter of the law, asked him a question, tempting him and saying,
and one of them, a lawyer, did question, tempting him, and saying,
36 M aster, which is the great commandment in the law?
`Teacher, which the great command in the Law?'
37 J esus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind.
And Jesus said to him, `Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding --
38 T his is the first and great commandment.
this is a first and great command;
39 A nd the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
and the second like to it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;
40 O n these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
on these -- the two commands -- all the law and the prophets do hang.'
41 ¶ While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
And the Pharisees having been gathered together, Jesus did question them,
42 s aying, What think ye of the Christ? Whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
saying, `What do ye think concerning the Christ? of whom is he son?' They say to him, `Of David.'
43 H e said unto them, How then does David in Spirit call him Lord, saying,
He saith to them, `How then doth David in the Spirit call him lord, saying,
44 T he LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
The Lord said to my lord, Sit at my right hand, till I may make thine enemies thy footstool?
45 I f David then calls him Lord, how is he his son?
If then David doth call him lord, how is he his son?'
46 A nd no one was able to answer him a word, neither dared anyone from that day forth ask him any more questions.
And no one was able to answer him a word, nor durst any from that day question him any more.
