1 Thessalonians 2 ~ 1 Thessalonians 2

1 For you yourselves, brethren, know that our entrance unto you was not vain,

For yourselves have known, brethren, our entrance in unto you, that it did not become vain,

2 b ut having suffered before and having been shamefully treated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to announce unto you the gospel of God with much diligence.

but having both suffered before, and having been injuriously treated (as ye have known) in Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the good news of God in much conflict,

3 F or our exhortation was not of error nor of uncleanness nor in guile,

for our exhortation not out of deceit, nor out of uncleanness, nor in guile,

4 b ut because we have been approved of God that he might entrust us with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who tries our hearts.

but as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the good news, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who is proving our hearts,

5 F or we were never flatterers in the word, as ye know, nor tainted with covetousness, God is witness,

for at no time did we come with speech of flattery, (as ye have known,) nor in a pretext for covetousness, (God witness!)

6 n or did we seek glory of men neither of you nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome unto you as the apostles of Christ.

nor seeking of men glory, neither from you nor from others, being able to be burdensome, as Christ's apostles.

7 But we were gentle among you, as a mother feeding and caring for her children,

But we became gentle in your midst, as a nurse may cherish her own children,

8 l oving you so much, that we were willing to give unto you, not only the gospel of God, but even our own souls, because ye are dear unto us.

so being desirous of you, we are well-pleased to impart to you not only the good news of God, but also our own souls, because beloved ye have become to us,

9 F or ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail, for labouring night and day, not to be a burden unto any of you, we preached among you the gospel of God.

for ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail, for, night and day working not to be a burden upon any of you, we did preach to you the good news of God;

10 Y e are witnesses, and God also, of how holy and just and irreprehensible our behaviour was among you that believe,

ye witnesses -- God also -- how kindly and righteously, and blamelessly to you who believe we became,

11 a s ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father with his children,

even as ye have known, how each one of you, as a father his own children, we are exhorting you, and comforting, and testifying,

12 t hat ye would walk worthy of God, who has called you unto his kingdom and glory.

for your walking worthily of God, who is calling you to His own reign and glory.

13 For this cause also we thank God without ceasing, that having received from us the word to hear from God, ye received it not as the word of men, (but as it is in truth) the word of God, which effectually works in you that believe.

Because of this also, we -- we do give thanks to God continually, that, having received the word of hearing from us of God, ye accepted, not the word of man, but as it is truly, the word of God, who also doth work in you who believe;

14 F or ye, brethren, have been imitators in Christ Jesus of the congregations of God which are in Judaea, for ye also have suffered like things of your own nation, even as they have of the Jews,

for ye became imitators, brethren, of the assemblies of God that are in Judea in Christ Jesus, because such things ye suffered, even ye, from your own countrymen, as also they from the Jews,

15 w ho killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and have persecuted us, and they do not please God and are contrary to all men,

who did both put to death the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and did persecute us, and God they are not pleasing, and to all men contrary,

16 f orbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up the measure of their sins always, for the wrath of God has come upon them to the uttermost.

forbidding us to speak to the nations that they might be saved, to fill up their sins always, but the anger did come upon them -- to the end!

17 But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly with great desire to see your face.

And we, brethren, having been taken from you for the space of an hour -- in presence, not in heart -- did hasten the more abundantly to see your face in much desire,

18 T herefore we would have come unto you, even I, Paul, once and again, but Satan hindered us.

wherefore we wished to come unto you, (I indeed Paul,) both once and again, and the Adversary did hinder us;

19 F or what is our hope or joy or crown of rejoicing? Is it not you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

for what our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? are not even ye before our Lord Jesus Christ in his presence?

20 F or ye are our glory and joy.

for ye are our glory and joy.
