1 ¶ Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
And Jesus having been born in Beth-Lehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, lo, mages from the east came to Jerusalem,
2 s aying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east and are come to worship him.
saying, `Where is he who was born king of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and we came to bow to him.'
3 W hen Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him.
And Herod the king having heard, was stirred, and all Jerusalem with him,
4 A nd when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he asked them where the Christ should be born.
and having gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he was inquiring from them where the Christ is born.
5 A nd they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea, for thus it is written by the prophet,
And they said to him, `In Beth-Lehem of Judea, for thus it hath been written through the prophet,
6 A nd thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda, for out of thee shall come a Leader that shall shepherd my people Israel.
And thou, Beth-Lehem, the land of Judah, thou art by no means the least among the leaders of Judah, for out of thee shall come one leading, who shall feed My people Israel.'
7 T hen Herod, calling the wise men unto him secretly, understood of them with diligence the time of the appearing of the star;
Then Herod, privately having called the mages, did inquire exactly from them the time of the appearing star,
8 a nd sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go there and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again that I may come and worship him also.
and having sent them to Beth-Lehem, he said, `Having gone -- inquire ye exactly for the child, and whenever ye may have found, bring me back word, that I also having come may bow to him.'
9 ¶ When they had heard the king, they departed; and, behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it arrived and stood over where the young child was.
And they, having heard the king, departed, and lo, the star, that they did see in the east, did go before them, till, having come, it stood over where the child was.
10 S eeing the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
And having seen the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy,
11 A nd entering into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother; and falling down, they worshipped him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold and frankincense and myrrh.
and having come to the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and having fallen down they bowed to him, and having opened their treasures, they presented to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh,
12 A nd being warned by divine revelation in dreams that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
and having been divinely warned in a dream not to turn back unto Herod, through another way they withdrew to their own region.
13 ¶ And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in dreams, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt and remain there until I bring thee word, for Herod will seek the young child to kill him.
And on their having withdrawn, lo, a messenger of the Lord doth appear in a dream to Joseph, saying, `Having risen, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and be thou there till I may speak to thee, for Herod is about to seek the child to destroy him.'
14 A nd awaking, he took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt
And he, having risen, took the child and his mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,
15 a nd was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
and he was there till the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, `Out of Egypt I did call My Son.'
16 ¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth and sent forth and killed all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had understood of the wise men.
Then Herod, having seen that he was deceived by the mages, was very wroth, and having sent forth, he slew all the male children in Beth-Lehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time that he inquired exactly from the mages.
17 T hen was fulfilled that which was spoken by the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
18 I n Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation and weeping and great mourning, Rachel was weeping for her children and would not be comforted because they perished.
`A voice in Ramah was heard -- lamentation and weeping and much mourning -- Rachel weeping her children, and she would not be comforted because they are not.'
19 ¶ But when Herod was dead, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in dreams to Joseph in Egypt,
And Herod having died, lo, a messenger of the Lord in a dream doth appear to Joseph in Egypt,
20 s aying, Arise and take the young child and his mother and go into the land of Israel, for they are dead who sought the death of the young child.
saying, `Having risen, take the child and his mother, and be going to the land of Israel, for they have died -- those seeking the life of the child.'
21 A nd he arose and took the young child and his mother and came into the land of Israel.
And he, having risen, took the child and his mother, and came to the land of Israel,
22 B ut when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judaea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there; notwithstanding, being warned by divine revelation in dreams, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee,
and having heard that Archelaus doth reign over Judea instead of Herod his father, he was afraid to go thither, and having been divinely warned in a dream, he withdrew to the parts of Galilee,
23 a nd he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophets, that he shall be called a Nazarene.
and coming, he dwelt in a city named Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken through the prophets, that `A Nazarene he shall be called.'
