1 Then certain men who came down from Judaea taught the brethren and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

And certain having come down from Judea, were teaching the brethren -- `If ye be not circumcised after the custom of Moses, ye are not able to be saved;'

2 W hen therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain other of them should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

there having been, therefore, not a little dissension and disputation to Paul and Barnabas with them, they arranged for Paul and Barnabas, and certain others of them, to go up unto the apostles and elders to Jerusalem about this question,

3 A nd they, being accompanied by some from the congregation, passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles, and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

they indeed, then, having been sent forward by the assembly, were passing through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the nations, and they were causing great joy to all the brethren.

4 A nd when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received by the congregation and by the apostles and elders, and they declared all the things that God had done with them.

And having come to Jerusalem, they were received by the assembly, and the apostles, and the elders, they declared also as many things as God did with them;

5 B ut there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

and there rose up certain of those of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying -- `It behoveth to circumcise them, to command them also to keep the law of Moses.'

6 And the apostles and elders came together to consider of this matter.

And there were gathered together the apostles and the elders, to see about this matter,

7 A nd when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God chose that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel and believe.

and there having been much disputing, Peter having risen up said unto them, `Men, brethren, ye know that from former days, God among us did make choice, through my mouth, for the nations to hear the word of the good news, and to believe;

8 A nd God, who knows the hearts, bore them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit, even as he did unto us,

and the heart-knowing God did bare them testimony, having given to them the Holy Spirit, even as also to us,

9 a nd put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

and did put no difference also between us and them, by the faith having purified their hearts;

10 N ow therefore why tempt ye God, putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

now, therefore, why do ye tempt God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

11 F or we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

but, through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we believe to be saved, even as also they.'

12 T hen all the multitude kept silence and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what great miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

And all the multitude did keep silence, and were hearkening to Barnabas and Paul, declaring as many signs and wonders as God did among the nations through them;

13 A nd after they had become silent, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:

and after they are silent, James answered, saying, `Men, brethren, hearken to me;

14 S imeon has declared how God first visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

Simeon did declare how at first God did look after to take out of the nations a people for His name,

15 A nd to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

and to this agree the words of the prophets, as it hath been written:

16 A fter this I will return and will restore the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will repair its ruins, and I will set it up again,

After these things I will turn back, and I will build again the tabernacle of David, that is fallen down, and its ruins I will build again, and will set it upright --

17 t hat the men that are left might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who does all these things.

that the residue of men may seek after the Lord, and all the nations, upon whom My name hath been called, saith the Lord, who is doing all these things.

18 K nown unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

`Known from the ages to God are all His works;

19 T herefore my sentence is that those from among the Gentiles who are converted to God not be troubled,

wherefore I judge: not to trouble those who from the nations do turn back to God,

20 b ut that we write unto them that they abstain from pollutions of idols and from fornication and from things strangled and from blood.

but to write to them to abstain from the pollutions of the idols, and the whoredom, and the strangled thing; and the blood;

21 F or Moses of old time has in every city those that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

for Moses from former generations in every city hath those preaching him -- in the synagogues every sabbath being read.'

22 Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole congregation, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, principal men among the brethren;

Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole assembly, chosen men out of themselves to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas -- Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren --

23 a nd they wrote letters by them after this manner: The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia;

having written through their hand thus: `The apostles, and the elders, and the brethren, to those in Antioch, and Syria, and Cilicia, brethren, who of the nations, greeting;

24 f orasmuch as we have heard that certain ones who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised and keep the law, to whom we gave no such commandment,

seeing we have heard that certain having gone forth from us did trouble you with words, subverting your souls, saying to be circumcised and to keep the law, to whom we did give no charge,

25 i t seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

it seemed good to us, having come together with one accord, chosen men to send unto you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul --

26 m en that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

men who have given up their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ --

27 W e have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.

we have sent, therefore, Judas and Silas, and they by word are telling the same things.

28 F or it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:

`For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, no more burden to lay upon you, except these necessary things:

29 t hat ye abstain from foods offered to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

to abstain from things offered to idols, and blood, and a strangled thing, and whoredom; from which keeping yourselves, ye shall do well; be strong!'

30 S o when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch; and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle,

They then, indeed, having been let go, went to Antioch, and having brought the multitude together, did deliver the epistle,

31 w hich when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.

and they having read, did rejoice for the consolation;

32 A nd Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words and confirmed them.

Judas also and Silas, being themselves also prophets, through much discourse did exhort the brethren, and confirm,

33 A nd after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.

and having passed some time, they were let go with peace from the brethren unto the apostles;

34 N otwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

and it seemed good to Silas to remain there still.

35 P aul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching the word of the Lord and announcing the gospel, with many others also.

And Paul and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and proclaiming good news -- with many others also -- the word of the Lord;

36 And some days after, Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord and see how they do.

and after certain days, Paul said unto Barnabas, `Having turned back again, we may look after our brethren, in every city in which we have preached the word of the Lord -- how they are.'

37 A nd Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

And Barnabas counseled to take with John called Mark,

38 B ut Paul thought it not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia and did not go with them to the work.

and Paul was not thinking it good to take him with them who withdrew from them from Pamphylia, and did not go with them to the work;

39 A nd the contention was so sharp between them that they departed asunder one from the other, and so Barnabas took Mark and sailed unto Cyprus;

there came, therefore, a sharp contention, so that they were parted from one another, and Barnabas having taken Mark, did sail to Cyprus,

40 a nd Paul chose Silas and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

and Paul having chosen Silas, went forth, having been given up to the grace of God by the brethren;

41 A nd he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the congregations.

and he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the assemblies.
