1 A llora Isacco chiamò Giacobbe, lo benedisse e gli diede quest’ordine: «Non prendere moglie tra le donne di Canaan.

And Isaac calleth unto Jacob, and blesseth him, and commandeth him, and saith to him, `Thou dost not take a wife of the daughters of Caanan;

2 P arti, va’ a Paddan-Aram, alla casa di Betuel, padre di tua madre, e prendi moglie là, tra le figlie di Labano, fratello di tua madre.

rise, go to Padan-Aram, to the house of Bethuel, thy mother's father, and take for thyself from thence a wife, of the daughters of Laban, thy mother's brother;

3 I l Dio onnipotente ti benedica, ti renda fecondo e ti moltiplichi, in modo che tu diventi un’assemblea di popoli,

and God Almighty doth bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and thou hast become an assembly of peoples;

4 e ti dia la benedizione di Abraamo: a te e alla tua discendenza con te, perché tu possieda il paese dove sei andato peregrinando, che Dio donò ad Abraamo».

and He doth give to thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee and to thy seed with thee, to cause thee to possess the land of thy sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.'

5 I sacco fece partire Giacobbe, il quale andò a Paddan-Aram da Labano, figlio di Betuel, l’Arameo, fratello di Rebecca, madre di Giacobbe e di Esaù.

And Isaac sendeth away Jacob, and he goeth to Padan-Aram, unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramaean, brother of Rebekah, mother of Jacob and Esau.

6 E saù vide che Isacco aveva benedetto Giacobbe e l’aveva mandato a Paddan-Aram perché vi prendesse moglie e che, benedicendolo, gli aveva dato quest’ordine: «Non prendere moglie tra le donne di Canaan»,

And Esau seeth that Isaac hath blessed Jacob, and hath sent him to Padan-Aram to take to himself from thence a wife -- in his blessing him that he layeth a charge upon him, saying, Thou dost not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan --

7 e che Giacobbe aveva ubbidito a suo padre e a sua madre ed era andato a Paddan-Aram.

that Jacob hearkeneth unto his father and unto his mother, and goeth to Padan-Aram --

8 E saù comprese che le donne di Canaan non erano gradite a suo padre Isacco.

and Esau seeth that the daughters of Canaan are evil in the eyes of Isaac his father,

9 A llora andò da Ismaele, e prese per moglie, oltre quelle che aveva già, Maalat, figlia d’Ismaele, figlio di Abraamo, sorella di Nebaiot.

and Esau goeth unto Ishmael, and taketh Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, sister of Nebajoth, unto his wives, to himself, for a wife.

10 G iacobbe partì da Beer-Sceba e andò verso Caran.

And Jacob goeth out from Beer-Sheba, and goeth toward Haran,

11 G iunse ad un certo luogo e vi passò la notte, perché il sole era già tramontato. Prese una delle pietre del luogo, se la mise per capezzale e lì si coricò.

and he toucheth at a place, and lodgeth there, for the sun hath gone in, and he taketh of the stones of the place, and maketh his pillows, and lieth down in that place.

12 F ece un sogno: una scala poggiava sulla terra, mentre la sua cima toccava il cielo; e gli angeli di Dio salivano e scendevano per la scala.

And he dreameth, and lo, a ladder set up on the earth, and its head is touching the heavens; and lo, messengers of God are going up and coming down by it;

13 I l Signore stava al di sopra di essa e gli disse: «Io sono il Signore, il Dio di Abraamo tuo padre e il Dio d’Isacco. La terra sulla quale tu stai coricato, io la darò a te e alla tua discendenza.

and lo, Jehovah is standing upon it, and He saith, `I Jehovah, God of Abraham thy father, and God of Isaac; the land on which thou art lying, to thee I give it, and to thy seed;

14 L a tua discendenza sarà come la polvere della terra e tu ti estenderai a occidente e a oriente, a settentrione e a meridione, e tutte le famiglie della terra saranno benedette in te e nella tua discendenza.

and thy seed hath been as the dust of the land, and thou hast broken forth westward, and eastward, and northward, and southward, and all families of the ground have been blessed in thee and in thy seed.

15 I o sono con te, e ti proteggerò dovunque tu andrai e ti ricondurrò in questo paese, perché io non ti abbandonerò prima di aver fatto quello che ti ho detto».

`And lo, I with thee, and have kept thee whithersoever thou goest, and have caused thee to turn back unto this ground; for I leave thee not till that I have surely done that which I have spoken to thee.'

16 Q uando Giacobbe si svegliò dal sonno, disse: «Certo, il Signore è in questo luogo e io non lo sapevo!»

And Jacob awaketh out of his sleep, and saith, `Surely Jehovah is in this place, and I knew not;'

17 E bbe paura e disse: «Com’è tremendo questo luogo! Questa non è altro che la casa di Dio, e questa è la porta del cielo!»

and he feareth, and saith, `How fearful this place; this is nothing but a house of God, and this a gate of the heavens.'

18 G iacobbe si alzò la mattina di buon’ora, prese la pietra che aveva messa come capezzale, la pose come pietra commemorativa e vi versò sopra dell’olio.

And Jacob riseth early in the morning, and taketh the stone which he hath made his pillows, and maketh it a standing pillar, and poureth oil upon its top,

19 E chiamò quel luogo Betel; mentre prima di allora il nome della città era Luz.

and he calleth the name of that place Bethel, and yet, Luz the name of the city at the first.

20 G iacobbe fece un voto, dicendo: «Se Dio è con me, se mi protegge durante questo viaggio che sto facendo, se mi dà pane da mangiare e vesti da coprirmi,

And Jacob voweth a vow, saying, `Seeing God is with me, and hath kept me in this way which I am going, and hath given to me bread to eat, and a garment to put on --

21 e se ritorno sano e salvo alla casa di mio padre, il Signore sarà il mio Dio

when I have turned back in peace unto the house of my father, and Jehovah hath become my God,

22 e questa pietra, che ho eretta come monumento, sarà la casa di Dio; di tutto quello che tu mi darai, io certamente ti darò la decima».

then this stone which I have made a standing pillar is a house of God, and all that Thou dost give to me -- tithing I tithe to Thee.'
