1 S alomone s’imparentò con il faraone, re d’Egitto. Sposò la figlia del faraone e la condusse nella città di Davide, finché egli avesse finito di costruire il suo palazzo, la casa del Signore e le mura di cinta di Gerusalemme.

And Solomon joineth in marriage with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and taketh the daughter of Pharaoh, and bringeth her in unto the city of David, till he completeth to build his own house, and the house of Jehovah, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.

2 I ntanto il popolo continuava a offrire sacrifici sugli alti luoghi, perché fino a quei giorni non era stata costruita una casa al nome del Signore.

Only, the people are sacrificing in high places, for there hath not been built a house for the name of Jehovah till those days.

3 S alomone amava il Signore e seguiva i precetti di Davide suo padre; soltanto offriva sacrifici e profumi sugli alti luoghi.

And Solomon loveth Jehovah, to walk in the statutes of David his father -- only, in high places he is sacrificing and making perfume --

4 I l re si recò a Gabaon per offrirvi sacrifici, perché quello era il principale fra gli alti luoghi; e su quell’altare Salomone offrì mille olocausti.

and the king goeth to Gibeon, to sacrifice there, for it the great high place; a thousand burnt-offerings cause to ascend doth Solomon on that altar.

5 A Gabaon il Signore apparve di notte, in sogno, a Salomone. Dio gli disse: «Chiedi ciò che vuoi che io ti conceda».

In Gibeon hath Jehovah appeared unto Solomon, in a dream of the night, and God saith, `Ask -- what do I give to thee?'

6 S alomone rispose: «Tu hai trattato con gran benevolenza il tuo servo Davide, mio padre, perché egli agiva davanti a te con fedeltà, con giustizia, con rettitudine di cuore a tuo riguardo; tu gli hai conservato questa grande benevolenza e gli hai dato un figlio che siede sul trono di lui, come oggi avviene.

And Solomon saith, `Thou hast done with Thy servant David my father great kindness, as he walked before Thee in truth and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with Thee, and Thou dost keep for him this great kindness, and dost give to him a son sitting on his throne, as this day.

7 O ra, o Signore, mio Dio, tu hai fatto regnare me, tuo servo, al posto di Davide mio padre, e io sono giovane e non so come comportarmi.

And now, O Jehovah my God, Thou hast caused thy servant to reign instead of David my father; and I a little child, I do not know to go out and to come in;

8 I o, tuo servo, sono in mezzo al popolo che tu hai scelto, popolo numeroso, che non può essere contato né calcolato tanto è grande.

and Thy servant in the midst of thy people, whom Thou hast chosen, a people numerous, that is not numbered nor counted for multitude,

9 D a’ dunque al tuo servo un cuore intelligente perché io possa amministrare la giustizia per il tuo popolo e discernere il bene dal male; perché chi mai potrebbe amministrare la giustizia per questo tuo popolo che è così numeroso?»

and Thou hast given to Thy servant an understanding heart, to judge Thy people, to discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this Thy great people?'

10 P iacque al Signore che Salomone gli avesse fatto una tale richiesta.

And the thing is good in the eyes of the Lord, that Solomon hath asked this thing,

11 E Dio gli disse: «Poiché tu hai domandato questo, e non hai chiesto per te lunga vita, né ricchezze, né la morte dei tuoi nemici, ma hai chiesto intelligenza per poter discernere ciò che è giusto,

and God saith unto him, `Because that thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thee many days, nor asked for thee riches, nor asked the life of thine enemies, and hast asked for thee discernment to understand judgment,

12 e cco, io faccio come tu hai detto, e ti do un cuore saggio e intelligente: nessuno è stato simile a te nel passato e nessuno sarà simile a te in futuro.

lo, I have done according to thy words; lo, I have given to thee a heart, wise and understanding, that like thee there hath not been before thee, and after thee there doth not arise like thee;

13 O ltre a questo io ti do quello che non mi hai domandato: ricchezze e gloria, tanto che non vi sarà durante tutta la tua vita nessun re che possa esserti paragonato.

and also, that which thou hast not asked I have given to thee, both riches and honour, that there hath not been like thee a man among the kings all thy days;

14 S e cammini nelle mie vie, osservando le mie leggi e i miei comandamenti, come fece Davide tuo padre, io prolungherò i tuoi giorni».

and if thou dost walk in My ways to keep My statutes, and My commands, as David thy father walked, then I have prolonged thy days.'

15 S alomone si svegliò e capì che era un sogno; tornò a Gerusalemme, si presentò davanti all’arca del patto del Signore e offrì olocausti, sacrifici di riconoscenza e fece un convito a tutti i suoi servitori. Il giudizio di Salomone

And Solomon awaketh, and lo, a dream; and he cometh in to Jerusalem, and standeth before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and causeth to ascend burnt-offerings, and maketh peace-offerings. And he maketh a banquet for all his servants,

16 A llora due prostitute vennero a presentarsi davanti al re.

then come in do two women, harlots, unto the king, and stand before him,

17 U na delle due disse: «Permetti, mio signore! Io e questa donna abitavamo nella medesima casa, e io partorii mentre lei stava in casa.

and the one woman saith, `O, my lord, I and this woman are dwelling in one house, and I bring forth with her, in the house;

18 I l terzo giorno dopo il mio parto, partorì anche questa donna. Noi stavamo insieme, e non c’erano estranei; non c’eravamo che noi due in casa.

and it cometh to pass on the third day of my bringing forth, that this woman also bringeth forth, and we together, there is no stranger with us in the house, save we two, in the house.

19 P oi, durante la notte, il figlio di questa donna morì, perché lei gli si era coricata sopra.

And the son of this woman dieth at night, because she hath lain upon it,

20 L ei, alzatasi nel cuore della notte, prese mio figlio dal mio fianco, mentre la tua serva dormiva, e lo adagiò sul suo seno, e sul mio seno mise il figlio suo morto.

and she riseth in the middle of the night, and taketh my son from beside me -- and thy handmaid is asleep -- and layeth it in her bosom, and her dead son she hath laid in my bosom;

21 Q uando mi sono alzata al mattino per allattare mio figlio, egli era morto; ma, guardandolo meglio a giorno chiaro, mi accorsi che non era il figlio che io avevo partorito».

and I rise in the morning to suckle my son, and lo, dead; and I consider concerning it in the morning, and lo, it was not my son whom I did bear.'

22 L ’altra donna disse: «No, il figlio vivo è il mio e il morto è il tuo». Ma la prima replicò: «No, invece, il morto è il figlio tuo e il vivo è il mio». Così litigavano in presenza del re.

And the other woman saith, `Nay, but my son the living, and thy son the dead;' and this saith, `Nay, but thy son the dead, and my son the living.' And they speak before the king.

23 A llora il re disse: «Una dice: “Questo che è vivo è mio figlio e quello che è morto è il tuo”; e l’altra dice: “No, invece, il morto è il figlio tuo e il vivo è il mio”».

And the king saith, `This saith, This my son, the living, and thy son the dead; and that saith, Nay, but thy son the dead, and my son the living.'

24 I l re ordinò: «Portatemi una spada!» E portarono una spada davanti al re.

And the king saith, `Take for me a sword;' and they bring the sword before the king,

25 I l re disse: «Dividete il bambino vivo in due parti, e datene la metà all’una e la metà all’altra».

and the king saith, `Cut the living child into two, and give the half to the one, and the half to the other.'

26 A llora la donna a cui apparteneva il bambino vivo, sentendosi commuovere le viscere per suo figlio, disse al re: «Mio signore, date a lei il bambino vivo, e non uccidetelo, no!» Ma l’altra diceva: «Non sia mio né tuo; si divida!»

And the woman whose son the living one saith unto the king (for her bowels yearned over her son), yea, she saith, `O, my lord, give to her the living child, and put it not at all to death;' and this saith, `Let it be neither mine or thine -- cut.'

27 A llora il re rispose: «Date a quella il bambino vivo, e non uccidetelo; lei è sua madre!»

And the king answereth and saith, `Give ye to her the living child, and put it not at all to death; she its mother.'

28 T utto Israele udì parlare del giudizio che il re aveva pronunciato, ed ebbero rispetto per il re, perché vedevano che la sapienza di Dio era in lui per amministrare la giustizia.

And all Israel hear of the judgment that the king hath judged, and fear because of the king, for they have seen that the wisdom of God in his heart, to do judgment.
