1 « Quando queste cose furono finite, i capi si avvicinarono a me, dicendo: “Il popolo d’Israele, i sacerdoti e i Leviti non si sono separati dai popoli di questi paesi, ma imitano le abominazioni dei Cananei, degli Ittiti, dei Ferezei, dei Gebusei, degli Ammoniti, dei Moabiti, degli Egiziani e degli Amorei.

And at the completion of these things, drawn nigh unto me have the heads, saying, `The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not been separated from the peoples of the lands, as to their abominations, even the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, the Ammonite, the Moabite, the Egyptian, and the Amorite,

2 I nfatti hanno preso le loro figlie come mogli per sé e per i propri figli e hanno mescolato la stirpe santa con i popoli di questi paesi; i capi e i magistrati sono stati i primi a commettere questa infedeltà”.

for they have taken of their daughters to them, and to their sons, and the holy seed have mingled themselves among the peoples of the lands, and the hand of the heads and of the seconds have been first in this trespass.'

3 Q uando seppi questo, mi stracciai le vesti e il mantello, mi strappai i capelli dalla testa e i peli della barba, e mi sedetti costernato.

And at my hearing this word, I have rent my garment and my upper robe, and pluck out of the hair of my head, and of my beard, and sit astonished,

4 A llora tutti quelli che tremavano alle parole del Dio d’Israele si radunarono presso di me a causa dell’infedeltà di quanti erano tornati dall’esilio. Io rimasi così seduto e costernato, fino al momento dell’offerta della sera.

and unto me are gathered every one trembling at the words of the God of Israel, because of the trespass of the removal, and I am sitting astonished till the present of the evening.

5 A l momento dell’offerta della sera, mi alzai dalla mia umiliazione, con le vesti e con il mantello stracciati, caddi in ginocchio e, stendendo le mani verso il Signore, mio Dio, dissi:

And at the present of the evening I have risen from mine affliction, and at my rending my garment and my upper robe, then I bow down on my knees, and spread out my hands unto Jehovah my God,

6 “ Mio Dio, io sono confuso; e mi vergogno, mio Dio, di alzare a te la mia faccia, perché le nostre iniquità si sono moltiplicate fin sopra la nostra testa, e la nostra colpa è così grande che giunge al cielo.

and say, `O my God, I have been ashamed, and have blushed to lift up, O my God, my face unto Thee, for our iniquities have increased over the head, and our guilt hath become great unto the heavens.

7 D al tempo dei nostri padri fino a oggi siamo stati grandemente colpevoli; e a causa delle nostre iniquità, noi, i nostri re e i nostri sacerdoti, siamo stati messi in mano ai re dei paesi stranieri, in balìa della spada, dell’esilio, della rapina e del disonore, come si vede anche oggi.

`From the days of our fathers we in great guilt unto this day, and in our iniquities we have been given -- we, our kings, our priests -- into the hand of the kings of the lands, with sword, with captivity, and with spoiling, and with shame of face, as this day.

8 O ra, per un breve momento, il Signore, nostro Dio, ci ha fatto grazia, lasciandoci alcuni superstiti, e concedendoci un asilo nel suo santo luogo, per illuminare i nostri occhi e darci un po’ di sollievo nella nostra schiavitù.

`And now, as a small moment hath grace been from Jehovah our God, to leave to us an escape, and to give to us a nail in His holy place, by our God's enlightening our eyes, and by giving us a little quickening in our servitude;

9 N oi infatti siamo schiavi; ma il nostro Dio non ci ha abbandonati nella nostra schiavitù. Anzi, ci ha fatto trovare benevolenza verso i re di Persia, i quali ci hanno dato tanto sollievo da poter rialzare la casa del nostro Dio e restaurare le sue rovine, e ci hanno concesso un luogo di riposo in Giuda e a Gerusalemme.

for servants we, and in our servitude our God hath not forsaken us, and stretcheth out unto us kindness before the kings of Persia, to give to us a quickening to lift up the house of our God, and to cause its wastes to cease, and to give to us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

10 O ra, nostro Dio, che possiamo dire dopo questo? Noi infatti abbiamo abbandonato i tuoi comandamenti,

`And now, what do we say, O our God, after this? for we have forsaken Thy commands,

11 q uelli che ci hai dati mediante i profeti, tuoi servitori, dicendo: ‘Il paese nel quale entrate per prenderne possesso è un paese reso impuro dalla corruzione dei popoli di questi paesi, dalle pratiche abominevoli con le quali lo hanno riempito da un’estremità all’altra con le loro contaminazioni.

that Thou hast commanded by the hands of thy servants the prophets, saying, The land into which ye are going to possess it, a land of impurity, by the impurity of the people of the lands, by their abominations with which they have filled it -- from mouth unto mouth -- by their uncleanness;

12 O ra dunque non date le vostre figlie ai loro figli, e non prendete le loro figlie per i vostri figli, e non ricercate la loro prosperità né il loro benessere, e così diventerete voi forti, mangerete i migliori prodotti del paese, e potrete lasciarlo in eredità perenne ai vostri figli’.

and now, your daughters ye do not give to their sons, and their daughters ye do not take to your sons, and ye do not seek their peace, and their good -- unto the age, so that ye are strong, and have eaten the good of the land, and given possession to your sons unto the age.

13 O ra, dopo tutto quello che ci è accaduto a causa delle nostre azioni malvagie e delle nostre grandi colpe, poiché tu, nostro Dio, ci hai puniti meno severamente di quanto le nostre colpe avrebbero meritato, e hai conservato di noi un residuo come questo,

`And after all that hath come upon us for our evil works, and for our great guilt (for Thou, O our God, hast kept back of the rod from our iniquities, and hast given to us an escape like this),

14 d ovremmo di nuovo violare i tuoi comandamenti e imparentarci con questi popoli abominevoli? La tua ira non s’infiammerebbe forse contro di noi fino a consumarci e a non lasciar più né residuo né superstite?

do we turn back to break Thy commands, and to join ourselves in marriage with the people of these abominations? art not Thou angry against us -- even to consumption -- till there is no remnant and escaped part?

15 S ignore, Dio d’Israele, tu sei giusto, e perciò oggi noi siamo ridotti a un residuo di scampati. Eccoci davanti a te a riconoscere la nostra colpa; poiché per essa, noi non potremmo resistere in tua presenza!”».

`O Jehovah, God of Israel, righteous Thou, for we have been left an escape, as this day; lo, we before Thee in our guilt, for there is none to stand before Thee concerning this.'
