1 L a parola del Signore mi fu ancora rivolta in questi termini:

And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying,

2 « Va’, e grida alle orecchie di Gerusalemme: “Così dice il Signore: ‘Io mi ricordo dell’affetto che avevi per me quand’eri giovane, del tuo amore da fidanzata, quando mi seguivi nel deserto, in una terra non seminata.

`Go, and thou hast called in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus said Jehovah: I have remembered for thee The kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, Thy going after Me in a wilderness, in a land not sown.

3 I sraele era consacrato al Signore, egli era le primizie della sua rendita; tutti quelli che lo divoravano si rendevano colpevoli e la calamità piombava su di loro’”», dice il Signore.

Holy Israel to Jehovah, The first-fruit of His increase, All consuming him are guilty, Evil cometh in unto them, an affirmation of Jehovah.

4 A scoltate la parola del Signore, o casa di Giacobbe, e voi tutte le famiglie della casa d’Israele!

Hear a word of Jehovah, O house of Jacob, And all ye families of the house of Israel.

5 C osì parla il Signore: «Quale iniquità hanno trovato i vostri padri in me, che si sono allontanati da me e sono andati dietro alla vanità, e sono diventati essi stessi vanità?

Thus said Jehovah: What -- have your fathers found in Me perversity, That they have gone far off from Me, And go after the vanity, and become vain,

6 E ssi non hanno detto: “Dov’è il Signore che ci ha fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto, che ci ha condotti per il deserto, per un paese di solitudine e di crepacci, per un paese di siccità e di ombra di morte, per un paese per il quale nessuno passò mai e dove non abitò mai nessuno?”

And have not said, Where Jehovah, Who bringeth us up out of the land of Egypt, Who leadeth us in a wilderness, In a land of deserts and pits, In a dry land, and of death-shade, In a land -- none hath passed through it, Nor dwelt hath man there?'

7 I o vi ho condotti in un paese che è un frutteto, perché ne mangiaste i frutti e i buoni prodotti; ma voi, quando vi siete entrati, avete contaminato il mio paese e avete fatto della mia eredità un’abominazione.

Yea, I bring you in to a land of fruitful fields, To eat its fruit and its goodness, And ye come in and defile My land, And Mine inheritance have made an abomination.

8 N on hanno detto i sacerdoti: “Dov’è il Signore ?” I depositari della legge non mi hanno conosciuto, i pastori mi sono stati infedeli, i profeti hanno profetizzato nel nome di Baal e sono andati dietro a cose che non giovano a nulla.

The priests have not said, `Where Jehovah?' And those handling the law have not known Me. And the shepherds transgressed against Me, And the prophets have prophesied by Baal, And after those who profit not have gone.

9 P erciò io contenderò ancora in giudizio con voi», dice il Signore, «e contenderò con i figli dei vostri figli.

Therefore, yet I plead with you, An affirmation of Jehovah, And with your sons' sons I plead.

10 P assate dunque nelle isole di Chittim e guardate! Mandate a Chedar e osservate bene, e guardate se avvenne mai qualcosa di simile!

For, pass to the isles of Chittim, and see, And to Kedar send, and consider well, And see if there hath been like this:

11 C ’è forse una nazione che abbia cambiato i suoi dèi, sebbene non siano dèi? Ma il mio popolo ha cambiato la sua gloria per ciò che non giova a nulla.

Hath a nation changed gods? (And they no gods!) And My people hath changed its honour For that which doth not profit.

12 O cieli, stupite di questo; inorridite e restate attoniti», dice il Signore.

Be astonished, ye heavens, at this, Yea, be frightened, be greatly wasted, An affirmation of Jehovah.

13 « Il mio popolo infatti ha commesso due mali: ha abbandonato me, la sorgente d’acqua viva, e si è scavato delle cisterne, delle cisterne screpolate, che non tengono l’acqua.

For two evils hath My people done, Me they have forsaken, a fountain of living waters, To hew out for themselves wells -- broken wells, That contain not the waters.

14 « Israele è forse uno schiavo? È forse uno schiavo nato in casa? Perché dunque è diventato una preda?

A servant Israel? Is he a child of the house? Wherefore hath he been for a prey?

15 I leoncelli ruggiscono contro di lui, fanno udire la loro voce e riducono il suo paese in una desolazione; le sue città sono bruciate e non ci sono più abitanti.

Against him roar do young lions, They have given forth their voice, And make his land become a desolation, His cities have been burnt without inhabitant.

16 P ersino gli abitanti di Nof e di Tafanes ti divorano il cranio.

Also sons of Noph and Tahapanes Consume thee -- the crown of the head!

17 T utto questo non ti succede forse perché hai abbandonato il Signore, il tuo Dio, mentre egli ti guidava per la buona via?

Dost thou not do this to thyself? thy forsaking Jehovah thy God, At the time He is leading thee in the way?

18 E ora, perché vai per la via che conduce in Egitto per andare a bere l’acqua del Nilo ? O perché vai per la via che conduce in Assiria per andare a bere l’acqua dell’Eufrate ?

And now, what -- to thee in the way of Egypt, To drink the waters of Sihor? And what -- to thee in the way of Asshur, To drink the waters of the River?

19 L a tua malvagità è quella che ti castiga; le tue infedeltà sono la tua punizione. Sappi dunque e vedi che cattiva e amara cosa è abbandonare il Signore, il tuo Dio, e il non aver di me nessun timore», dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti.

Instruct thee doth thy wickedness, And thy backslidings reprove thee, Know and see that an evil and a bitter thing thy forsaking Jehovah thy God, And My fear not being on thee, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah of Hosts.

20 « Già da lungo tempo tu hai spezzato il tuo giogo, rotto le tue catene e hai detto: “Non voglio più servire!” Ma sopra ogni alto colle e sotto ogni albero verdeggiante ti sei buttata giù come una prostituta.

For from of old thou hast broken thy yoke, Drawn away thy bands, and sayest, `I do not serve,' For, on every high height, and under every green tree, Thou art wandering -- a harlot.

21 E ppure, io ti avevo piantata come una nobile vigna, tutta del miglior ceppo; come mai ti sei trasformata in tralci degenerati di una vigna a me non familiare?

And I planted thee a choice vine, wholly a true seed, And how hast thou been turned to Me, To the degenerate shoots of a strange vine?

22 A nche se ti lavassi con il nitro e usassi molto sapone, la tua iniquità lascerebbe una macchia davanti a me», dice il Signore, Dio.

But though thou dost wash with nitre, And dost multiply to thyself soap, Marked is thine iniquity before Me, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.

23 « Come puoi dire: “Non mi sono contaminata, non sono andata dietro ai Baal”? Guarda i tuoi passi nella valle, riconosci quello che hai fatto, dromedaria leggera e vagabonda!

How sayest thou, `I have not been defiled, After the Baalim I have not gone?' See thy way in a valley, know what thou hast done, A swift dromedary winding her ways,

24 A sina selvatica, abituata al deserto, che sbuffa nell’ardore della sua passione! Chi le impedirà di soddisfare le sue voglie? Tutti quelli che la cercano non hanno da affaticarsi: la trovano nel suo mese.

A wild ass accustomed to a wilderness, In the desire of her soul she hath swallowed up wind, Her meeting -- who doth turn her back? None seeking her do weary themselves, In her month they find her.

25 G uarda che il tuo piede non si scalzi e che la tua gola non s’inaridisca! Ma tu hai detto: “Non c’è rimedio; no, io amo gli stranieri e andrò dietro a loro!”

Withhold thy foot from being unshod, And thy throat from thirst, And thou sayest, `It is incurable, No, for I have loved strangers, and after them I go.'

26 C ome il ladro è confuso quand’è colto sul fatto, così sono confusi quelli della casa d’Israele: essi, i loro re, i loro capi, i loro sacerdoti e i loro profeti,

As the shame of a thief when he is found, So put to shame have been the house of Israel, They, their kings, their heads, And their priests, and their prophets,

27 i quali dicono al legno: “Tu sei mio padre”, e alla pietra: “Tu ci hai dato la vita!” Poiché essi mi hanno voltato le spalle e non la faccia; ma nel tempo della loro sventura dicono: “Àlzati e salvaci!”

Saying to wood, `My father thou!' And to a stone, `Thou hast brought me forth,' For they turned unto me the back and not the face, And in the time of their vexation, They say, `Arise Thou, and save us.'

28 D ove sono i tuoi dèi che ti sei fatti? Si alzino, se ti possono salvare nel tempo della tua sventura! Infatti, o Giuda, tu hai tanti dèi quante città.

And where thy gods, that thou hast made to thyself? Let them arise, if they may save thee, In the time of thy vexation, For -- the number of thy cities have been thy gods, O Judah,

29 « Perché mi contestate? Voi tutti mi siete stati infedeli», dice il Signore.

Why do ye strive with Me? All of you have transgressed against Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

30 « Invano ho colpito i vostri figli: non ne hanno ricevuto correzione; la vostra spada ha divorato i vostri profeti come un leone distruttore.

In vain I have smitten your sons, Instruction they have not accepted, Devoured hath your sword your prophets, As a destroying lion.

31 G ente, considerate la parola del Signore! Io sono stato forse un deserto o un paese di fitte tenebre per Israele? Perché dice il mio popolo: “Noi siamo liberi, non vogliamo tornare più da te”?

O generation, see ye the word of Jehovah: A wilderness have I been to Israel? A land of thick darkness? Wherefore have My people said, `We mourned, We come not in again unto Thee.'

32 L a fanciulla può forse dimenticare i suoi ornamenti o la sposa la sua cintura? Eppure il mio popolo ha dimenticato me, da giorni innumerevoli.

Doth a virgin forget her ornaments? A bride her bands? And My people have forgotten Me days without number.

33 C ome sei brava a trovare la via per cercare l’amore! Hai di che insegnare persino alle donne malvagie!

What -- dost thou make pleasing thy ways to seek love? Therefore even the wicked thou hast taught thy ways.

34 A nche sulla tua veste si trova il sangue di poveri innocenti, che tu non hai colto in flagrante delitto di scasso;

Also in thy skirts hath been found the blood of innocent needy souls, Not by digging have I found them, but upon all these.

35 e ppure, dopo tutto questo, tu dici: “Io sono innocente; certo l’ira sua si è distolta da me”. Ecco, io ti condannerò perché hai detto: “Non ho peccato”.

And thou sayest, `Because I have been innocent, Surely turned back hath His anger from me?' Lo, I have been judged with thee, Because of thy saying, `I have not sinned.'

36 P erché hai tanta premura di cambiare strada? Anche dall’Egitto riceverai confusione, come già l’hai ricevuta dall’Assiria.

What? thou art very vile to repeat thy way, Even of Egypt thou art ashamed, As thou hast been ashamed of Asshur,

37 A nche di là uscirai con le mani sul capo; perché il Signore rigetta quelli nei quali tu confidi e tu non riuscirai nel tuo intento per loro mezzo».

Also from this thou goest out, And thy hands on thy head, For Jehovah hath kicked at thy confidences, And thou dost not give prosperity to them!
