1 R oboamo andò a Sichem, perché tutto Israele era venuto a Sichem per farlo re.

And Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for Shechem have all Israel come to cause him to reign.

2 Q uando lo seppe Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, che si trovava ancora in Egitto – dov’era fuggito per scampare dal re Salomone – tornò dall’Egitto.

And it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's -- who in Egypt because he hath fled from the face of Solomon the king -- hearing, that Jeroboam turneth back out of Egypt;

3 L o mandarono a chiamare, e Geroboamo con tutto Israele vennero a parlare a Roboamo e gli dissero:

and they send and call for him, and Jeroboam cometh in, and all Israel, and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 « Tuo padre ha reso duro il nostro giogo; ora rendi tu più lievi la dura servitù e il giogo pesante che tuo padre ci ha imposti, e noi ti serviremo».

`Thy father made our yoke sharp, and now, make light of the sharp service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'

5 E gli rispose loro: «Tornate da me fra tre giorni!» E il popolo se ne andò.

And he saith unto them, `Yet three days -- then return ye unto me;' and the people go.

6 I l re Roboamo si consigliò con i vecchi che erano stati al servizio del re Salomone suo padre mentre era vivo e disse: «Che cosa mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo?»

And king Rehoboam consulteth with the aged men who have been standing before Solomon his father in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'

7 Q uelli gli parlarono così: «Se ti mostri benevolo verso questo popolo e lo esaudisci, e se gli parli con bontà, ti sarà servo per sempre».

And they speak unto him, saying, `If thou dost become good to this people, and hast been pleased with them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'

8 M a Roboamo trascurò il consiglio datogli dai vecchi e si consigliò con i giovani che erano cresciuti con lui ed erano al suo servizio,

And he forsaketh the counsel of the aged men that they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, those standing before him,

9 e disse loro: «Come consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo che mi ha parlato dicendo: “Allevia il giogo che tuo padre ci ha imposto?”»

and he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people that have spoken unto me, saying, Make light of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'

10 I giovani che erano cresciuti con lui gli risposero: «Ecco quel che dirai a questo popolo che si è rivolto a te dicendo: “Tuo padre ha reso pesante il nostro giogo, e tu rendicelo più leggero!” Gli risponderai così: “Il mio dito mignolo è più grosso del corpo di mio padre;

And the lads who have grown up with him, speak with him, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light of our yoke; thus dost thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father;

11 m io padre vi ha caricati d’un giogo pesante, e io lo renderò più pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con la frusta, e io vi castigherò con i flagelli a punte”».

and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I -- I add unto your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

12 T re giorni dopo Geroboamo e tutto il popolo vennero da Roboamo, come aveva ordinato il re, dicendo: «Tornate da me fra tre giorni».

And Jeroboam cometh in, and all the people, unto Rehoboam on the third day, as the king spake, saying, `Return unto me on the third day.'

13 I l re rispose loro duramente, abbandonando il consiglio che i vecchi gli avevano dato;

And the king answereth them sharply, and king Rehoboam forsaketh the counsel of the aged men,

14 e parlò loro secondo il consiglio dei giovani, e disse: «Mio padre ha reso pesante il vostro giogo, e io lo renderò più pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con la frusta, e io vi castigherò con i flagelli a punte».

and speaketh unto them according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I -- I add unto it; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

15 C osì il re non diede ascolto al popolo; perché tutto ciò era diretto da Dio, affinché si adempisse la parola che il Signore aveva pronunciata per mezzo di Aiia di Silo a Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat.

And the king hath not hearkened unto the people, for the revolution hath been from God, for the sake of Jehovah's establishing His word that He spake by the hand of Abijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16 Q uando tutto Israele vide che il re non gli dava ascolto, rispose al re, dicendo: «Che abbiamo da fare con Davide? Noi non abbiamo nulla in comune con il figlio d’Isai! Ognuno alla sua tenda, o Israele! Provvedi ora alla tua casa, o Davide!» E tutto Israele se ne andò alle sue tende.

And all Israel have seen that the king hath not hearkened to them, and the people send back the king, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in a son of Jesse; each to thy tents, O Israel; now, see thy house -- David,' and all Israel go to their tents.

17 M a sui figli d’Israele che abitavano nelle città di Giuda regnò Roboamo.

As to the sons of Israel who are dwelling in the cities of Judah -- Rehoboam reigneth over them.

18 I l re Roboamo mandò loro Adoram, responsabile dei lavori forzati; ma i figli d’Israele lo lapidarono, ed egli morì. Il re Roboamo salì in fretta sopra un carro per fuggire a Gerusalemme.

And king Rehoboam sendeth Hadoram, who over the tribute, and the sons of Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;

19 C osì Israele si ribellò alla casa di Davide, ed è rimasto ribelle fino a oggi.

and Israel transgress against the house of David unto this day.
