1 N el paese ci fu una carestia, oltre la prima che c’era già stata ai tempi di Abraamo, e Isacco andò da Abimelec, re dei Filistei, a Gherar.

And there is a famine in the land, besides the first famine which was in the days of Abraham, and Isaac goeth unto Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

2 I l Signore gli apparve e gli disse: «Non scendere in Egitto; abita nel paese che io ti dirò.

And Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith, `Go not down towards Egypt, tabernacle in the land concerning which I speak unto thee,

3 S oggiorna in questo paese e io sarò con te e ti benedirò, perché io darò a te e alla tua discendenza tutti questi paesi e manterrò il giuramento che feci ad Abraamo tuo padre.

sojourn in this land, and I am with thee, and bless thee, for to thee and to thy seed I give all these lands, and I have established the oath which I have sworn to Abraham thy father;

4 M oltiplicherò la tua discendenza come le stelle del cielo e darò alla tua discendenza tutti questi paesi; tutte le nazioni della terra saranno benedette nella tua discendenza,

and I have multiplied thy seed as stars of the heavens, and I have given to thy seed all these lands; and blessed themselves in thy seed have all nations of the earth;

5 p erché Abraamo ubbidì alla mia voce e osservò quello che gli avevo ordinato: i miei comandamenti, i miei statuti e le mie leggi».

because that Abraham hath hearkened to My voice, and keepeth My charge, My commands, My statutes, and My laws.'

6 C osì Isacco rimase a Gherar.

And Isaac dwelleth in Gerar;

7 Q uando la gente del luogo gli faceva delle domande intorno a sua moglie, egli rispondeva: «È mia sorella», perché aveva paura di dire: «È mia moglie». «Non vorrei», egli pensava, «che la gente del luogo mi uccida a causa di Rebecca». Infatti lei era di bell’aspetto.

and men of the place ask him of his wife, and he saith, `She my sister:' for he hath been afraid to say, `My wife -- lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, for she of good appearance.'

8 M entre era là da molto tempo, avvenne che Abimelec, re dei Filistei, si affacciò alla finestra e vide che Isacco scherzava con Rebecca sua moglie.

And it cometh to pass, when the days have been prolonged to him there, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looketh through the window, and seeth, and lo, Isaac is playing with Rebekah his wife.

9 A llora Abimelec chiamò Isacco e gli disse: «Certo costei è tua moglie; come mai dunque hai detto: “È mia sorella”?» Isacco rispose: «Perché dicevo: “Non vorrei essere messo a morte a causa di lei”».

And Abimelech calleth for Isaac, and saith, `Lo, she surely thy wife; and how hast thou said, She my sister?' and Isaac saith unto him, `Because I said, Lest I die for her.'

10 E Abimelec: «Che ci hai fatto? Poco ci mancava che qualcuno del popolo si unisse a tua moglie, e tu ci avresti attirato addosso una grande colpa».

And Abimelech saith, `What this thou hast done to us? as a little thing one of the people had lain with thy wife, and thou hadst brought upon us guilt;'

11 E Abimelec diede quest’ordine a tutto il popolo: «Chiunque toccherà quest’uomo o sua moglie sia messo a morte».

and Abimelech commandeth all the people, saying, `He who cometh against this man or against his wife, dying doth die.'

12 I sacco seminò in quel paese e in quell’anno raccolse il centuplo; il Signore lo benedisse.

And Isaac soweth in that land, and findeth in that year a hundredfold, and Jehovah blesseth him;

13 Q uest’uomo divenne grande, andò crescendo sempre più, finché diventò ricchissimo:

and the man is great, and goeth on, going on and becoming great, till that he hath been very great,

14 f u padrone di greggi di pecore, di mandrie di buoi e di numerosa servitù. I Filistei lo invidiavano.

and he hath possession of a flock, and possession of a herd, and an abundant service; and the Philistines envy him,

15 P erciò turarono e riempirono di terra tutti i pozzi che i servi di suo padre avevano scavati, al tempo di Abraamo suo padre,

and all the wells which his father's servants digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines have stopped them, and fill them with dust.

16 e Abimelec disse a Isacco: «Vattene via da noi, perché tu sei molto più potente di noi».

And Abimelech saith unto Isaac, `Go from us; for thou hast become much mightier than we;'

17 I sacco allora partì di là, s’accampò nella valle di Gherar e vi si stabilì.

and Isaac goeth from thence, and encampeth in the valley of Gerar, and dwelleth there;

18 I sacco scavò di nuovo i pozzi d’acqua, che erano stati scavati al tempo di suo padre Abraamo, e che i Filistei avevano turato dopo la morte di Abraamo; e li chiamò con gli stessi nomi con cui li aveva chiamati suo padre.

and Isaac turneth back, and diggeth the wells of water which they digged in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines do stop after the death of Abraham, and he calleth to them names according to the names which his father called them.

19 I servi d’Isacco scavarono nella valle e vi trovarono un pozzo d’acqua viva.

And Isaac's servants dig in the valley, and find there a well of living water,

20 M a i pastori di Gherar litigarono con i pastori d’Isacco, dicendo: «L’acqua è nostra». Così egli chiamò il pozzo Esec, perché quelli avevano litigato con lui.

and shepherds of Gerar strive with shepherds of Isaac, saying, `The water ours;' and he calleth the name of the well `Strife,' because they have striven habitually with him;

21 P oi i servi scavarono un altro pozzo e quelli litigarono anche per questo. E Isacco lo chiamò Sitna.

and they dig another well, and they strive also for it, and he calleth its name `Hatred.'

22 A llora egli partì di là e scavò un altro pozzo, per il quale quelli non litigarono. Ed egli lo chiamò Recobot, perché disse: «Ora il Signore ci ha dato spazio libero e noi prospereremo nel paese».

And he removeth from thence, and diggeth another well, and they have not striven for it, and he calleth its name Enlargements, and saith, `For -- now hath Jehovah given enlargement to us, and we have been fruitful in the land.'

23 P oi di là Isacco salì a Beer-Sceba.

And he goeth up from thence Beer-Sheba,

24 I l Signore gli apparve quella stessa notte e gli disse: «Io sono il Dio di Abraamo tuo padre; non temere, perché io sono con te e ti benedirò e moltiplicherò la tua discendenza per amore del mio servo Abraamo».

and Jehovah appeareth unto him during that night, and saith, `I the God of Abraham thy father, fear not, for I with thee, and have blessed thee, and have multiplied thy seed, because of Abraham My servant;'

25 I n quel luogo egli costruì un altare, invocò il nome del Signore e vi piantò la sua tenda. E i servi d’Isacco vi scavarono un pozzo.

and he buildeth there an altar, and preacheth in the name of Jehovah, and stretcheth out there his tent, and there Isaac's servants dig a well.

26 A bimelec partì da Gherar e andò da lui con Auzat, suo amico, e con Picol, capo del suo esercito.

And Abimelech hath gone unto him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phichol head of his host;

27 I sacco disse loro: «Perché venite da me, visto che mi odiate e mi avete mandato via dal vostro paese?»

and Isaac saith unto them, `Wherefore have ye come unto me, and ye have hated me, and ye send me away from you?'

28 Q uelli risposero: «Noi abbiamo chiaramente visto che il Signore è con te; e abbiamo detto: “Si faccia ora un giuramento tra di noi, cioè fra te e noi, e facciamo un’alleanza con te”.

And they say, `We have certainly seen that Jehovah hath been with thee, and we say, `Let there be, we pray thee, an oath between us, between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;

29 G iura che non ci farai alcun male, così come noi non ti abbiamo toccato, e non ti abbiamo fatto altro che del bene e t’abbiamo lasciato andare in pace. Tu sei ora benedetto dal Signore ».

do not evil with us, as we have not touched thee, and as we have only done good with thee, and send thee away in peace; thou now blessed of Jehovah.'

30 E Isacco fece loro un banchetto, ed essi mangiarono e bevvero.

And he maketh for them a banquet, and they eat and drink,

31 L a mattina seguente si alzarono di buon’ora e si prestarono giuramento reciprocamente. Poi Isacco li congedò e quelli si separarono da lui in pace.

and rise early in the morning, and swear one to another, and Isaac sendeth them away, and they go from him in peace.

32 Q uello stesso giorno i servi d’Isacco gli vennero a dare notizia del pozzo che avevano scavato, dicendogli: «Abbiamo trovato dell’acqua».

And it cometh to pass during that day that Isaac's servants come and declare to him concerning the circumstances of the well which they have digged, and say to him, `We have found water;'

33 E d egli lo chiamò Siba. Per questo la città porta il nome di Beer-Sceba fino ad oggi.

and he calleth it Shebah, therefore the name of the city Beer-Sheba, unto this day.

34 O r Esaù, all’età di quarant’anni, prese in moglie Giudit, figlia di Beeri l’Ittita, e Basmat, figlia di Elon l’Ittita.

And Esau is a son of forty years, and he taketh a wife, Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite,

35 E sse furono causa di profonda amarezza per Isacco e per Rebecca.

and they are a bitterness of spirit to Isaac and to Rebekah.
