1 O h, fosse la mia testa piena d’acqua e i miei occhi una fonte di lacrime! Io piangerei giorno e notte gli uccisi della figlia del mio popolo!

Who doth make my head waters, And mine eye a fountain of tears? And I weep by day and by night, For the wounded of the daughter of my people.

2 O h, se avessi nel deserto un rifugio da viandanti! Io abbandonerei il mio popolo e me ne andrei lontano da costoro, perché sono tutti adùlteri, un’adunata di traditori.

Who doth give me in a wilderness A lodging-place of travellers? And I leave my people, and go from them, For all of them adulterers, An assembly of treacherous ones.

3 « Tendono la lingua, che è il loro arco, per scoccare menzogne; sono diventati potenti nel paese, ma non per agire con fedeltà, poiché passano di malvagità in malvagità e non conoscono me», dice il Signore.

And they bend their tongue, their bow a lie, And not for stedfastness have they been mighty in the land, For from evil unto evil they have gone forth, And Me they have not known, An affirmation of Jehovah!

4 « Si guardi ciascuno dal suo amico, nessuno si fidi del suo fratello; poiché ogni fratello non fa che ingannare, ogni amico va spargendo calunnie.

Each of his friend -- beware ye, And on any brother, do not trust, For every brother doth utterly supplant, For every friend slanderously doth walk,

5 L ’uno inganna l’altro, non dice la verità; esercitano la loro lingua a mentire, si affannano a fare il male.

And each at his friend they mock, And truth they do not speak, They taught their tongue to speak falsehood, To commit iniquity they have laboured.

6 L a tua abitazione è in mezzo alla malafede; per malafede costoro rifiutano di conoscermi», dice il Signore.

thy dwelling in the midst of deceit, Through deceit they refused to know Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

7 P erciò, così parla il Signore degli eserciti: «Ecco, io li fonderò nel crogiuolo per saggiarli; poiché che altro dovrei fare per la figlia del mio popolo?

Therefore, thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Lo, I am refining them, and have tried them, For how do I do because of the daughter of My people?

8 L a loro lingua è una freccia micidiale, essa non parla che in malafede; con la bocca ognuno parla di pace al suo prossimo, ma nel cuore gli tende insidie.

A slaughtering arrow their tongue, Deceit it hath spoken in its mouth, Peace with its neighbour it speaketh, And in its heart it layeth its ambush,

9 N on dovrei forse punirli per queste cose», dice il Signore, «non dovrei forse vendicarmi di una simile nazione?»

For these things do not I see after them? An affirmation of Jehovah, Against a nation such as this doth not My soul avenge itself?

10 I o voglio prorompere in pianto e in gemito per i monti; voglio spandere un lamento per i pascoli del deserto, perché sono bruciati, al punto che nessuno più vi passa, non vi si ode più muggito di mandrie; gli uccelli del cielo e le bestie sono fuggite, sono scomparse.

For the mountains I lift up weeping and wailing, And for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, For they have been burnt up without any passing over, Nor have they heard the voice of cattle, From the fowl of the heavens unto the beast they have fled, they have gone.

11 « Io ridurrò Gerusalemme in un mucchio di macerie, in un covo di sciacalli, e farò delle città di Giuda una desolazione senza abitanti».

And I make Jerusalem become heaps, A habitation of dragons, And the cities of Judah I make a desolation, Without inhabitant.

12 C hi è il saggio che capisca queste cose? A chi ha parlato la bocca del Signore perché egli ne dia notizia? Perché il paese è distrutto, desolato come un deserto al punto che non vi passa più nessuno?

Who the wise man? and he understandeth this, And he to whom the mouth of Jehovah spake? And he doth declare it, For what hath the land perished? It hath been burnt up as a wilderness, Without any passing through.

13 I l Signore risponde: «Perché costoro hanno abbandonato la mia legge, che io avevo loro messa davanti, e non hanno dato ascolto alla mia voce né l’hanno seguita nella loro condotta;

And Jehovah saith: Because of their forsaking My law that I set before them, And they have not hearkened to My voice nor walked in it,

14 m a hanno seguito la caparbietà del loro cuore e sono andati dietro ai Baal, come i loro padri insegnarono loro».

And they walk after the stubbornness of their heart, And after the Baalim, that their fathers taught them,

15 P erciò così parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: «Ecco, io farò mangiare assenzio a questo popolo e gli farò bere acqua avvelenata.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: Lo, I am causing them -- this people -- to eat wormwood, And I have caused them to drink water of gall,

16 I o li disperderò fra le nazioni che né loro né i loro padri hanno conosciuto; manderò dietro a loro la spada, finché io li abbia consumati».

And I have scattered them among nations Which they knew not, they and their fathers, And have sent after them the sword, Till I have consumed them.

17 C osì parla il Signore degli eserciti: «Pensate a chiamare delle piagnone, e che esse vengano! Invitate le più accorte, e che esse vengano

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Consider ye, and call for mourning women, And they come, And to the wise women send, and they come,

18 e si affrettino a fare un lamento su di noi, sì che i nostri occhi si sciolgano in lacrime e l’acqua fluisca dalle nostre palpebre.

And they hasten, and lift up for us a wailing. And run down our eyes do tears, And from our eyelids do waters flow.

19 I nfatti una voce di lamento si fa udire da Sion: “Come siamo devastati! Siamo coperti di vergogna, perché dobbiamo abbandonare il paese, ora che hanno abbattuto le nostre case”».

For -- a voice of wailing is heard from Zion: How have we been spoiled! We have been greatly ashamed, Because we have forsaken the land, Because they have cast down our tabernacles.

20 D onne, ascoltate la parola del Signore, e le vostre orecchie ricevano la parola dalla sua bocca! Insegnate alle vostre figlie dei lamenti, ognuna insegni alla sua compagna dei canti funebri!

But hear, ye women, a word of Jehovah, And your ear receiveth a word of His mouth, And teach ye your daughters wailing, and each her neighbour lamentation.

21 P oiché la morte è salita alle nostre finestre, è entrata nei nostri palazzi per far sparire i bambini dalle strade e i giovani dalle piazze.

For death hath come up into our windows, It hath come into our palaces, To cut off the suckling from without, Young men from the broad places.

22 D i’: «Così parla il Signore: “I cadaveri degli uomini cadranno come letame sull’aperta campagna, come un mannello che il mietitore si lascia indietro e che nessuno raccoglie”».

Speak thus -- an affirmation of Jehovah, And fallen hath the carcase of man, As dung on the face of the field, And as a handful after the reaper, And there is none gathering.

23 C osì parla il Signore: «Il saggio non si glori della sua saggezza, il forte non si glori della sua forza, il ricco non si glori della sua ricchezza;

Thus said Jehovah: Let not the wise boast himself in his wisdom, Nor let the mighty boast himself in his might, Let not the rich boast himself in his riches,

24 m a chi si gloria si glori di questo: che ha intelligenza e conosce me, che sono il Signore. Io pratico la bontà, il diritto e la giustizia sulla terra, perché di queste cose mi compiaccio», dice il Signore.

But -- in this let the boaster boast himself, In understanding and knowing Me, For I Jehovah, doing kindness, Judgment, and righteousness, in the earth, For in these I have delighted, An affirmation of Jehovah.

25 « Ecco, i giorni vengono», dice il Signore, «in cui punirò tutti i circoncisi che sono incirconcisi:

Lo, days are coming -- an affirmation of Jehovah, And I have laid a charge on all circumcised in the foreskin,

26 l ’Egitto, Giuda, Edom, i figli di Ammon, Moab, tutti quelli che si radono le tempie e abitano nel deserto; infatti tutte le nazioni sono incirconcise, e tutta la casa d’Israele è incirconcisa di cuore».

On Egypt, and on Judah, and on Edom, And on the sons of Ammon, and on Moab, And on all cutting the corner, Who are dwelling in the wilderness, For all the nations uncircumcised, And all the house of Israel uncircumcised in heart!
