1 F iglioli, ascoltate l’istruzione di un padre, state attenti a imparare il discernimento,

Hear, ye sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding.

2 p erché io vi do una buona dottrina; non abbandonate il mio insegnamento.

For good learning I have given to you, My law forsake not.

3 Q uando ero ancora bambino presso mio padre, tenero e unico presso mia madre,

For, a son I have been to my father -- tender, And an only one before my mother.

4 e gli mi istruiva dicendomi: «Il tuo cuore conservi le mie parole; osserva i miei comandamenti e vivrai.

And he directeth me, and he saith to me: `Let thy heart retain my words, Keep my commands, and live.

5 A cquista saggezza, acquista intelligenza; non dimenticare le parole della mia bocca e non te ne sviare.

Get wisdom, get understanding, Do not forget, nor turn away From the sayings of my mouth.

6 N on abbandonare la saggezza, ed essa ti custodirà; amala, ed essa ti proteggerà.

Forsake her not, and she doth preserve thee, Love her, and she doth keep thee.

7 I l principio della saggezza è: acquista la saggezza. Sì, a costo di quanto possiedi, acquista l’intelligenza.

The first thing wisdom -- get wisdom, And with all thy getting get understanding.

8 E saltala, ed essa t’innalzerà; essa ti coprirà di gloria quando l’avrai abbracciata.

Exalt her, and she doth lift thee up, She honoureth thee, when thou dost embrace her.

9 E ssa ti metterà sul capo un fregio di grazia, ti farà dono di una corona di gloria».

She giveth to thy head a wreath of grace, A crown of beauty she doth give thee freely.

10 A scolta, figlio mio, ricevi le mie parole, e anni di vita ti saranno moltiplicati.

Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And years of life multiplied to thee.

11 I o ti indico la via della saggezza, ti avvio per i sentieri della rettitudine.

In a way of wisdom I have directed thee, I have caused thee to tread in paths of uprightness.

12 S e cammini, i tuoi passi non saranno raccorciati, e se corri, non inciamperai.

In thy walking thy step is not straitened, And if thou runnest, thou stumblest not.

13 A fferra saldamente l’istruzione, non lasciarla andare; conservala, perché essa è la tua vita.

Lay hold on instruction, do not desist, Keep her, for she thy life.

14 N on entrare nel sentiero degli empi e non t’inoltrare per la via dei malvagi;

Into the path of the wicked enter not, And be not happy in a way of evil doers.

15 s chivala, non passare per essa; allontanatene e va’ oltre.

Avoid it, pass not over into it, Turn aside from it, and pass on.

16 E ssi infatti non possono dormire se non hanno fatto del male; il sonno è loro tolto se non hanno fatto cadere qualcuno.

For they sleep not if they do not evil, And their sleep hath been taken violently away, If they cause not to stumble.

17 E ssi mangiano il pane dell’empietà e bevono il vino della violenza;

For they have eaten bread of wickedness, And wine of violence they drink.

18 m a il sentiero dei giusti è come la luce che spunta e va sempre più risplendendo, finché sia giorno pieno.

And the path of the righteous as a shining light, Going and brightening till the day is established,

19 L a via degli empi è come il buio; essi non scorgono ciò che li farà cadere.

The way of the wicked as darkness, They have not known at what they stumble.

20 F iglio mio, sta’ attento alle mie parole, inclina l’orecchio ai miei detti.

My son, to my words give attention, To my sayings incline thine ear,

21 N on si allontanino mai dai tuoi occhi, conservali in fondo al cuore,

Let them not turn aside from thine eyes, Preserve them in the midst of thy heart.

22 p oiché sono vita per quelli che li trovano, salute per tutto il loro corpo.

For life they to those finding them, And to all their flesh healing.

23 C ustodisci il tuo cuore più di ogni altra cosa, poiché da esso provengono le sorgenti della vita.

Above every charge keep thy heart, For out of it the outgoings of life.

24 R imuovi da te la perversità della bocca, allontana da te la falsità delle labbra.

Turn aside from thee a froward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee,

25 I tuoi occhi guardino bene in faccia, le tue palpebre si dirigano dritto davanti a te.

Thine eyes do look straightforward, And thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 A ppiana il sentiero dei tuoi piedi, tutte le tue vie siano ben preparate.

Ponder thou the path of thy feet, And all thy ways established.

27 N on girare né a destra né a sinistra, ritira il tuo piede dal male.

Incline not the right or to the left, Turn aside thy foot from evil!
