1 E lia, il Tisbita, uno di quelli che si erano stabiliti in Galaad, disse ad Acab: «Com’è vero che vive il Signore, Dio d’Israele, che io servo, non ci sarà né rugiada né pioggia in questi anni, se non alla mia parola».

And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, saith unto Ahab, `Jehovah, God of Israel, liveth, before whom I have stood, there is not these years dew and rain, except according to my word.'

2 L a parola del Signore gli fu rivolta in questi termini:

And the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,

3 « Parti di qua, va’ verso oriente, e nasconditi presso il torrente Cherit, che è di fronte al Giordano.

`Go from this; and thou hast turned for thee eastward, and been hidden by the brook Cherith, that on the front of the Jordan,

4 T u berrai al torrente, e io ho comandato ai corvi che là ti diano da mangiare».

and it hath been, from the brook thou dost drink, and the ravens I have commanded to sustain thee there.'

5 E gli dunque partì e fece secondo la parola del Signore; andò e si stabilì presso il torrente Cherit, che è di fronte al Giordano.

And he goeth and doth according to the word of Jehovah, yea, he goeth and dwelleth by the brook Cherith, that on the front of the Jordan,

6 E i corvi gli portavano del pane e della carne la mattina, e del pane e della carne la sera; e beveva al torrente.

and the ravens are bringing to him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and of the brook he drinketh.

7 M a di lì a qualche tempo il torrente rimase asciutto, perché non pioveva sul paese. Elia a Sarepta

And it cometh to pass, at the end of days, that the brook drieth up, for there hath been no rain in the land,

8 A llora la parola del Signore gli fu rivolta in questi termini:

and the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,

9 « Àlzati, va’ ad abitare a Sarepta dei Sidoni; io ho ordinato a una vedova di laggiù che ti dia da mangiare».

`Rise, go to Zarephath, that to Zidon, and thou hast dwelt there; lo, I have commanded there a widow woman to sustain thee.'

10 E gli dunque si alzò e andò a Sarepta; e quando giunse alla porta della città, c’era una donna vedova che raccoglieva legna. Egli la chiamò e le disse: «Ti prego, vammi a cercare un po’ d’acqua in un vaso, affinché io beva».

And he riseth, and goeth to Zarephath, and cometh in unto the opening of the city, and lo there, a widow woman gathering sticks, and he calleth unto her, and saith, `Bring, I pray thee, to me, a little water in a vessel, and I drink.'

11 E mentre lei andava a prenderla, egli le gridò dietro: «Portami, ti prego, anche un pezzo di pane».

And she goeth to bring, and he calleth unto her and saith, `Bring, I pray thee, to me a morsel of bread in thy hand.'

12 L ei rispose: «Com’è vero che vive il Signore, il tuo Dio, del pane non ne ho; ho solo un pugno di farina in un vaso e un po’ d’olio in un vasetto; ed ecco, sto raccogliendo due rami secchi per andare a cuocerla per me e per mio figlio; la mangeremo, e poi moriremo».

And she saith, `Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but the fulness of the hand of meal in a pitcher, and a little oil in a dish; and lo, I am gathering two sticks, and have gone in and prepared it for myself, and for my son, and we have eaten it -- and died.'

13 E lia le disse: «Non temere; va’ e fa’ come hai detto, ma fanne prima una piccola focaccia per me, e portamela, poi ne farai per te e per tuo figlio.

And Elijah saith unto her, `Fear not, go, do according to thy word, only make for me thence a little cake, in the first place, and thou hast brought out to me; and for thee and for thy son make -- last;

14 I nfatti così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “La farina nel vaso non si esaurirà e l’olio nel vasetto non calerà, fino al giorno che il Signore manderà la pioggia sulla terra”».

for thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, The pitcher of meal is not consumed, and the dish of oil is not lacking, till the day of Jehovah's giving a shower on the face of the ground.'

15 Q uella andò e fece come Elia le aveva detto; lei, la sua famiglia ed Elia ebbero di che mangiare per molto tempo.

And she goeth, and doth according to the word of Elijah, and she eateth, she and he, and her household -- days;

16 L a farina nel vaso non si esaurì e l’olio nel vasetto non calò, secondo la parola che il Signore aveva pronunciata per bocca di Elia. Elia risuscita il figlio della vedova di Sarepta

the pitcher of meal was not consumed, and the dish of oil did not lack, according to the word of Jehovah that He spake by the hand of Elijah.

17 D opo queste cose, il figlio di quella donna, che era la padrona di casa, si ammalò; e la sua malattia fu così grave, che egli cessò di respirare.

And it cometh to pass, after these things, the son of the woman, mistress of the house, hath been sick, and his sickness is very severe till that no breath hath been left in him.

18 A llora la donna disse a Elia: «Che ho da fare con te, o uomo di Dio? Sei forse venuto da me per rinnovare il ricordo delle mie iniquità e far morire mio figlio?»

And she saith unto Elijah, `What -- to me and to thee, O man of God? thou hast come unto me to cause mine iniquity to be remembered, and to put my son to death!'

19 E gli le rispose: «Dammi tuo figlio». Lo prese dalle braccia di lei; lo portò su nella camera di sopra, dove egli alloggiava, e lo coricò sul suo letto.

And he saith unto her, `Give to me thy son;' and he taketh him out of her bosom, and taketh him up unto the upper chamber where he is abiding, and layeth him on his own bed,

20 P oi invocò il Signore e disse: « Signore, mio Dio, colpisci di sventura anche questa vedova, della quale io sono ospite, facendole morire il figlio?»

and crieth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Jehovah my God, also on the widow with whom I am sojourning hast Thou done evil -- to put her son to death?'

21 S i distese quindi tre volte sul bambino e invocò il Signore, e disse: « Signore, mio Dio, torni, ti prego, l’anima di questo bambino in lui!»

And he stretcheth himself out on the lad three times, and calleth unto Jehovah, and saith, `O Jehovah my God, let turn back, I pray Thee, the soul of this lad into his midst;'

22 I l Signore esaudì la voce di Elia: l’anima del bambino tornò in lui, ed egli visse.

and Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the lad turneth back into his midst, and he liveth.

23 E lia prese il bambino dalla camera di sopra e lo portò al pian terreno della casa, e lo restituì a sua madre, dicendole: «Guarda! Tuo figlio è vivo».

And Elijah taketh the lad, and bringeth him down from the upper chamber of the house, and giveth him to his mother, and Elijah saith, `See, thy son liveth!'

24 A llora la donna disse a Elia: «Ora riconosco che tu sei un uomo di Dio e che la parola del Signore, che è nella tua bocca, è verità».

And the woman saith unto Elijah, `Now, this I have known, that a man of God thou, and the word of Jehovah in thy mouth truth.'
