1 M entre egli usciva dal tempio, uno dei suoi discepoli gli disse: «Maestro, guarda che pietre e che edifici!»

And as he is going forth out of the temple, one of his disciples saith to him, `Teacher, see! what stones! and what buildings!'

2 G esù gli disse: «Vedi questi grandi edifici? Non sarà lasciata pietra su pietra che non sia diroccata».

and Jesus answering said to him, `Seest thou these great buildings? there may not be left a stone upon a stone, that may not be thrown down.'

3 P oi, mentre era seduto sul monte degli Ulivi di fronte al tempio, Pietro, Giacomo, Giovanni e Andrea gli domandarono in disparte:

And as he is sitting at the mount of the Olives, over-against the temple, Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, were questioning him by himself,

4 « Dicci, quando avverranno queste cose e quale sarà il segno che tutte queste cose staranno per adempiersi?»

`Tell us when these things shall be? and what the sign when all these may be about to be fulfilled?'

5 G esù cominciò a dire loro: «Guardate che nessuno v’inganni!

And Jesus answering them, began to say, `Take heed lest any one may lead you astray,

6 M olti verranno nel mio nome, dicendo: “Sono io ”; e ne inganneranno molti.

for many shall come in my name, saying -- I am, and many they shall lead astray;

7 Q uando udrete guerre e rumori di guerre, non vi turbate; è necessario che ciò avvenga, ma non sarà ancora la fine.

and when ye may hear of wars and reports of wars, be not troubled, for these behove to be, but the end not yet;

8 P erché insorgerà nazione contro nazione e regno contro regno; vi saranno terremoti in vari luoghi; vi saranno carestie. Queste cose saranno un principio di dolori.

for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles; beginnings of sorrows these.

9 B adate a voi stessi! Vi consegneranno ai tribunali, sarete battuti nelle sinagoghe, sarete fatti comparire davanti a governatori e re, per causa mia, affinché ciò serva loro di testimonianza.

`And take ye heed to yourselves, for they shall deliver you up to sanhedrims, and to synagogues, ye shall be beaten, and before governors and kings ye shall be set for my sake, for a testimony to them;

10 E prima bisogna che il vangelo sia predicato fra tutte le genti.

and to all the nations it behoveth first that the good news be proclaimed.

11 Q uando vi condurranno per mettervi nelle loro mani, non preoccupatevi in anticipo di ciò che direte, ma dite quello che vi sarà dato in quell’ora; perché non siete voi che parlate, ma lo Spirito Santo.

`And when they may lead you, delivering up, be not anxious beforehand what ye may speak, nor premeditate, but whatever may be given to you in that hour, that speak ye, for it is not ye who are speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12 I l fratello darà il fratello alla morte e il padre, il figlio; i figli insorgeranno contro i genitori e li faranno morire.

`And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and father child, and children shall rise up against parents, and shall put them to death,

13 S arete odiati da tutti a causa del mio nome; ma chi avrà perseverato sino alla fine sarà salvato.

and ye shall be hated by all because of my name, but he who hath endured to the end -- he shall be saved.

14 « Quando poi vedrete l’abominazione della desolazione posta là dove non deve stare (chi legge faccia attenzione!), allora quelli che saranno nella Giudea fuggano ai monti;

`And when ye may see the abomination of the desolation, that was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (whoever is reading let him understand), then those in Judea, let them flee to the mountains;

15 c hi sarà sulla terrazza non scenda e non entri per prendere qualcosa da casa sua,

and he upon the house-top, let him not come down to the house, nor come in to take anything out of his house;

16 e chi sarà nel campo non torni indietro a prendere la sua veste.

and he who is in the field, let him not turn to the things behind, to take up his garment.

17 G uai alle donne che saranno incinte e a quelle che allatteranno in quei giorni!

`And wo to those with child, and to those giving suck, in those days;

18 P regate che ciò non avvenga d’inverno!

and pray ye that your flight may not be in winter,

19 P erché quelli saranno giorni di tale tribolazione, che non ce n’è stata una uguale dal principio del mondo che Dio ha creato, fino ad ora, né mai più vi sarà.

for those days shall be tribulation, such as hath not been from the beginning of the creation that God created, till now, and may not be;

20 S e il Signore non avesse abbreviato quei giorni, nessuno si salverebbe; ma, a causa degli eletti che si è scelto, egli ha abbreviato quei giorni.

and if the Lord did not shorten the days, no flesh had been saved; but because of the chosen, whom He did choose to Himself, He did shorten the days.

21 A llora, se qualcuno vi dice: “Il Cristo eccolo qui, eccolo là”, non credeteci;

`And then, if any may say to you, Lo, here the Christ, or, Lo, there, ye may not believe;

22 p erché sorgeranno falsi cristi e falsi profeti e faranno segni e prodigi per sedurre, se fosse possibile, gli eletti.

for there shall rise false Christs and false prophets, and they shall give signs and wonders, to seduce, if possible, also the chosen;

23 M a voi state attenti; io vi ho predetto ogni cosa.

and ye, take heed; lo, I have foretold you all things.

24 M a in quei giorni, dopo quella tribolazione, il sole si oscurerà e la luna non darà più il suo splendore;

`But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

25 l e stelle cadranno dal cielo e le potenze che sono nei cieli saranno scrollate.

and the stars of the heaven shall be falling, and the powers that are in the heavens shall be shaken.

26 A llora si vedrà il Figlio dell’uomo venire sulle nuvole con grande potenza e gloria.

`And then they shall see the Son of Man coming in clouds with much power and glory,

27 E d egli allora manderà gli angeli e raccoglierà i suoi eletti dai quattro venti, dall’estremo della terra all’estremo del cielo.

and then he shall send his messengers, and gather together his chosen from the four winds, from the end of the earth unto the end of heaven.

28 O ra imparate dal fico questa similitudine: quando i suoi rami si fanno teneri e mettono le foglie, voi sapete che l’estate è vicina.

`And from the fig-tree learn ye the simile: when the branch may already become tender, and may put forth the leaves, ye know that nigh is the summer;

29 C osì anche voi, quando vedrete accadere queste cose, sappiate che egli è vicino, alle porte.

so ye, also, when these ye may see coming to pass, ye know that it is nigh, at the doors.

30 I n verità vi dico che questa generazione non passerà prima che tutte queste cose siano avvenute.

Verily I say to you, that this generation may not pass away till all these things may come to pass;

31 I l cielo e la terra passeranno, ma le mie parole non passeranno.

the heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

32 Q uanto a quel giorno o a quell’ora, nessuno li sa, neppure gli angeli del cielo, neppure il Figlio, ma solo il Padre.

`And concerning that day and the hour no one hath known -- not even the messengers who are in the heaven, not even the Son -- except the Father.

33 S tate in guardia, vegliate, poiché non sapete quando sarà quel momento.

Take heed, watch and pray, for ye have not known when the time is;

34 È come un uomo che si è messo in viaggio dopo aver lasciato la sua casa, dandone la responsabilità ai suoi servi, a ciascuno il proprio compito, e comandando al portinaio di vegliare.

as a man who is gone abroad, having left his house, and given to his servants the authority, and to each one his work, did command also the porter that he may watch;

35 V egliate dunque perché non sapete quando viene il padrone di casa; se a sera, o a mezzanotte, o al cantare del gallo, o la mattina;

watch ye, therefore, for ye have not known when the lord of the house doth come, at even, or at midnight, or at cock-crowing, or at the morning;

36 p erché, venendo all’improvviso, non vi trovi addormentati.

lest, having come suddenly, he may find you sleeping;

37 Q uel che dico a voi, lo dico a tutti: “Vegliate”».

and what I say to you, I say to all, Watch.'
