1 L ’arca del Signore rimase nel paese dei Filistei per sette mesi.

And the ark of Jehovah is in the field of the Philistines seven months,

2 P oi i Filistei chiamarono i sacerdoti e gl’indovini, e dissero: «Che faremo dell’arca del Signore ? Insegnateci il modo di rimandarla al suo luogo».

and the Philistines call for priests and for diviners, saying, `What do we do to the ark of Jehovah? let us know wherewith we send it to its place?'

3 Q uelli risposero: «Se rimandate l’arca del Dio d’Israele, non la rimandate senza niente, ma fate un’offerta di riparazione; allora guarirete, e così saprete perché la sua mano non si è allontanata da voi».

And they say, `If ye are sending away the ark of the God of Israel, ye do not send it away empty; for ye do certainly send back to Him a guilt-offering; then ye are healed, and it hath been known to you why His hand doth not turn aside from you.'

4 E ssi chiesero: «Quale offerta di riparazione gli offriremo?» Quelli risposero: «Cinque emorroidi d’oro e cinque topi d’oro, secondo il numero dei prìncipi dei Filistei; perché unico è stato il flagello che ha colpito voi e i vostri prìncipi.

And they say, `What the guilt-offering which we send back to Him?' and they say, `The number of the princes of the Philistines -- five golden emerods, and five golden mice -- for one plague to you all, and to your princes,

5 F ate dunque delle riproduzioni delle vostre emorroidi e delle sculture dei topi che vi devastano il paese, e date gloria al Dio d’Israele; forse egli alleggerirà la sua mano da sopra di voi, da sopra i vostri dèi e da sopra il vostro paese.

and ye have made images of your emerods, and images of your mice that are corrupting the land, and have given honour to the God of Israel; it may be He doth lighten His hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land;

6 P erché dovreste indurire il vostro cuore, come gli Egiziani e il faraone indurirono il loro cuore? Dopo che egli ebbe manifestato contro di loro la sua potenza, gli Egiziani non lasciarono forse partire gl’Israeliti?

and why do ye harden your heart as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their heart? do they not -- when He hath rolled Himself upon them -- send them away, and they go?

7 F ate dunque un carro nuovo e prendete due vacche che allattino e che non abbiano mai portato giogo; attaccate al carro le vacche e riconducete nella stalla i loro vitelli.

`And now, take and make one new cart, and two suckling kine, on which a yoke hath not gone up, and ye have bound the kine in the cart, and caused their young ones to turn back from after them to the house,

8 P oi prendete l’arca del Signore e mettetela sul carro; accanto ad essa mettete, in una cassetta, i lavori d’oro che presentate al Signore come offerta di riparazione; poi lasciatela andare.

and ye have taken the ark of Jehovah, and put it on the cart, and the vessels of gold which ye have returned to Him -- a guilt-offering -- ye put in a coffer on its side, and have sent it away, and it hath gone;

9 E state a vedere: se sale per la via che conduce al suo paese, verso Bet-Semes, vuol dire che il Signore è colui che ci ha fatto questo grande male; se no, sapremo che non ci ha colpito la sua mano, ma che questo ci è avvenuto per caso».

and ye have seen, if the way of its own border it goeth up to Beth-Shemesh -- He hath done to us this great evil; and if not, then we have known that His hand hath not come against us; an accident it hath been to us.'

10 Q uelli dunque fecero così; presero due vacche che allattavano, le attaccarono al carro e chiusero nella stalla i vitelli.

And the men do so, and take two suckling kine, and bind them in the cart, and their young ones they have shut up in the house;

11 P oi misero sul carro l’arca del Signore e la cassetta con i topi d’oro e le riproduzioni delle emorroidi.

and they place the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer, and the golden mice, and the images of their emerods.

12 L e vacche presero direttamente la via che conduce a Bet-Semes; seguirono sempre la medesima strada, muggendo mentre andavano, e non piegarono né a destra né a sinistra. I prìncipi dei Filistei le seguirono sino ai confini di Bet-Semes.

And the kine go straight in the way, on the way to Beth-Shemesh, in one highway they have gone, going and lowing, and have not turned aside right or left; and the princes of the Philistines are going after them unto the border of Beth-Shemesh.

13 G li abitanti di Bet-Semes mietevano il grano nella valle; alzando gli occhi scorsero l’arca e si rallegrarono nel vederla.

And the Beth-Shemeshites are reaping their wheat-harvest in the valley, and they lift up their eyes, and see the ark, and rejoice to see.

14 I l carro, giunto al campo di Giosuè di Bet-Semes, vi si fermò. C’era là una grossa pietra; essi spaccarono i legni del carro e offrirono le vacche in olocausto al Signore.

And the cart hath come in unto the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite, and standeth there, and there a great stone, and they cleave the wood of the cart, and the kine they have caused to ascend -- a burnt-offering to Jehovah.

15 I Leviti deposero l’arca del Signore e la cassetta che le stava accanto contenente gli oggetti d’oro, e misero ogni cosa sulla grossa pietra; e, in quello stesso giorno, gli abitanti di Bet-Semes offrirono olocausti e presentarono sacrifici al Signore.

And the Levites have taken down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer which with it, in which the vessels of gold, and place on the great stone; and the men of Beth-Shemesh have caused to ascend burnt-offerings and sacrifice sacrifices in that day to Jehovah;

16 I cinque prìncipi dei Filistei, veduto ciò, ritornarono il giorno stesso a Ecron.

and the five princes of the Philistines have seen, and turn back Ekron, on that day.

17 Q uesto è il numero delle emorroidi d’oro che i Filistei presentarono al Signore come offerta di riparazione: una per Asdod, una per Gaza, una per Ascalon, una per Gat, una per Ecron.

And these the golden emerods which the Philistines have sent back -- a guilt-offering to Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

18 D ei topi d’oro ne offrirono tanti quante erano le città dei Filistei appartenenti ai cinque prìncipi, dalle fortezze ai villaggi di campagna che si estendono fino alla grossa pietra sulla quale fu posata l’arca del Signore, e che esiste ancora al giorno d’oggi nel campo di Giosuè, il Bet-Semita.

and the golden mice -- the number of all the cities of the Philistines -- for the five princes, from the fenced city even unto the hamlet of the villages, even unto the great meadow on which they placed the ark of Jehovah -- unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite.

19 I l Signore colpì gli abitanti di Bet-Semes, perché avevano guardato dentro l’arca del Signore; colpì settanta uomini fra i cinquantamila del popolo. Il popolo fece cordoglio, perché il Signore l’aveva colpito con un grande flagello.

And He smiteth among the men of Beth-Shemesh, for they looked into the ark of Jehovah, yea, He smiteth among the people seventy men -- fifty chief men; and the people mourn, because Jehovah smote among the people -- a great smiting.

20 Q uelli di Bet-Semes dissero: «Chi può resistere in presenza del Signore, di questo Dio santo? E dove andrà l’arca, partendo da noi?»

And the men of Beth-Shemesh say, `Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and unto whom doth He go up from us?'

21 A llora spedirono dei messaggeri agli abitanti di Chiriat-Iearim per dire loro: «I Filistei hanno ricondotto l’arca del Signore; scendete e portatela presso di voi».

And they send messengers unto the inhabitants of Kirjath-Jearim, saying, `The Philistines have sent back the ark of Jehovah; come down, take it up unto you.'
