1 D opo queste cose Gesù se ne andò all’altra riva del mare di Galilea, cioè il mare di Tiberiade.

After these things Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee (of Tiberias),

2 U na gran folla lo seguiva, perché vedeva i segni che egli faceva sugli infermi.

and there was following him a great multitude, because they were seeing his signs that he was doing on the ailing;

3 M a Gesù salì sul monte e là si pose a sedere con i suoi discepoli.

and Jesus went up to the mount, and he was there sitting with his disciples,

4 O r la Pasqua, la festa dei Giudei, era vicina.

and the passover was nigh, the feast of the Jews.

5 G esù dunque, alzati gli occhi e vedendo che una gran folla veniva verso di lui, disse a Filippo: «Dove compreremo del pane perché questa gente abbia da mangiare?»

Jesus then having lifted up eyes and having seen that a great multitude doth come to him, saith unto Philip, `Whence shall we buy loaves, that these may eat?' --

6 D iceva così per metterlo alla prova; perché sapeva bene quello che stava per fare.

and this he said, trying him, for he himself had known what he was about to do.

7 F ilippo gli rispose: «Duecento denari di pani non bastano perché ciascuno ne riceva un pezzetto».

Philip answered him, `Two hundred denaries' worth of loaves are not sufficient to them, that each of them may receive some little;'

8 U no dei suoi discepoli, Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, gli disse:

one of his disciples -- Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter -- saith to him,

9 « C’è qui un ragazzo che ha cinque pani d’orzo e due pesci; ma che cosa sono per così tanta gente?»

`There is one little lad here who hath five barley loaves, and two fishes, but these -- what are they to so many?'

10 G esù disse: «Fateli sedere». C’era molta erba in quel luogo. La gente dunque si sedette, ed erano circa cinquemila uomini.

And Jesus said, `Make the men to sit down;' and there was much grass in the place, the men then sat down, in number, as it were, five thousand,

11 G esù quindi prese i pani e, dopo aver reso grazie, li distribuì alla gente seduta; lo stesso fece dei pesci, quanti ne vollero.

and Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those reclining, in like manner, also of the little fishes as much as they wished.

12 Q uando furono saziati, disse ai suoi discepoli: «Raccogliete i pezzi avanzati, perché niente si perda».

And when they were filled, he saith to his disciples, `Gather together the broken pieces that are over, that nothing may be lost;'

13 E ssi quindi li raccolsero, e riempirono dodici ceste con i pezzi dei cinque pani d’orzo che erano avanzati a quelli che avevano mangiato.

they gathered together, therefore, and filled twelve hand-baskets with broken pieces, from the five barley loaves that were over to those having eaten.

14 L a gente dunque, avendo visto il segno che Gesù aveva fatto, disse: «Questi è certo il profeta che deve venire nel mondo».

The men, then, having seen the sign that Jesus did, said -- `This is truly the Prophet, who is coming to the world;'

15 G esù, quindi, sapendo che stavano per venire a rapirlo per farlo re, si ritirò di nuovo sul monte, da solo. Gesù cammina sul mare

Jesus, therefore, having known that they are about to come, and to take him by force that they may make him king, retired again to the mountain himself alone.

16 Q uando fu sera, i suoi discepoli scesero al mare

And when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,

17 e , montati in una barca, si diressero all’altra riva, verso Capernaum. Era già buio e Gesù non era ancora venuto presso di loro.

and having entered into the boat, they were going over the sea to Capernaum, and darkness had already come, and Jesus had not come unto them,

18 I l mare era agitato, perché tirava un forte vento.

the sea also -- a great wind blowing -- was being raised,

19 C ome ebbero remato per circa venticinque o trenta stadi, videro Gesù camminare sul mare e accostarsi alla barca; ed ebbero paura.

having pushed onwards, therefore, about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and coming nigh to the boat, and they were afraid;

20 M a egli disse loro: «Sono io, non temete».

and he saith to them, `I am, be not afraid;'

21 E ssi dunque lo vollero prendere nella barca, e subito la barca toccò terra là dove erano diretti. Gesù, il pane della vita

they were willing then to receive him into the boat, and immediately the boat came unto the land to which they were going.

22 I l giorno seguente, la folla che era rimasta sull’altra riva del mare si rese conto che là non c’era altro che una sola barca e che Gesù non vi era salito con i suoi discepoli, ma che i discepoli erano partiti da soli.

On the morrow, the multitude that was standing on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little boat there except one -- that into which his disciples entered -- and that Jesus went not in with his disciples into the little boat, but his disciples went away alone,

23 A ltre barche, intanto, erano giunte da Tiberiade, vicino al luogo dove avevano mangiato il pane dopo che il Signore aveva reso grazie.

(and other little boats came from Tiberias, nigh the place where they did eat the bread, the Lord having given thanks),

24 L a folla, dunque, quando ebbe visto che Gesù non era là, e nemmeno i suoi discepoli, montò in quelle barche e andò a Capernaum in cerca di Gesù.

when therefore the multitude saw that Jesus is not there, nor his disciples, they also themselves did enter into the boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus;

25 T rovatolo di là dal mare, gli dissero: «Rabbì, quando sei giunto qui?»

and having found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, `Rabbi, when hast thou come hither?'

26 G esù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che voi mi cercate non perché avete visto dei segni, ma perché avete mangiato dei pani e siete stati saziati.

Jesus answered them and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were satisfied;

27 A doperatevi non per il cibo che perisce, ma per il cibo che dura in vita eterna, e che il Figlio dell’uomo vi darà; poiché su di lui il Padre, cioè Dio, ha posto il proprio sigillo».

work not for the food that is perishing, but for the food that is remaining to life age-during, which the Son of Man will give to you, for him did the Father seal -- God.'

28 E ssi dunque gli dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare per compiere le opere di Dio?»

They said therefore unto him, `What may we do that we may work the works of God?'

29 G esù rispose loro: «Questa è l’opera di Dio: che crediate in colui che egli ha mandato».

Jesus answered and said to them, `This is the work of God, that ye may believe in him whom He did send.'

30 A llora essi gli dissero: «Quale segno fai, dunque, affinché lo vediamo e ti crediamo? Che operi?

They said therefore to him, `What sign, then, dost thou, that we may see and may believe thee? what dost thou work?

31 I nostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto, come è scritto: “Egli diede loro da mangiare del pane venuto dal cielo” ».

our fathers the manna did eat in the wilderness, according as it is having been written, Bread out of the heaven He gave them to eat.'

32 G esù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che non Mosè vi ha dato il pane che viene dal cielo, ma il Padre mio vi dà il vero pane che viene dal cielo.

Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread out of the heaven; but my Father doth give you the true bread out of the heaven;

33 P oiché il pane di Dio è quello che scende dal cielo, e dà vita al mondo».

for the bread of God is that which is coming down out of the heaven, and giving life to the world.'

34 E ssi quindi gli dissero: «Signore, dacci sempre di questo pane».

They said, therefore, unto him, `Sir, always give us this bread.'

35 G esù disse loro: «Io sono il pane della vita; chi viene a me non avrà più fame e chi crede in me non avrà mai più sete.

And Jesus said to them, `I am the bread of the life; he who is coming unto me may not hunger, and he who is believing in me may not thirst -- at any time;

36 M a io ve l’ho detto: “Voi {mi} avete visto, eppure non credete!”

but I said to you, that ye also have seen me, and ye believe not;

37 T utti quelli che il Padre mi dà verranno a me; e colui che viene a me, non lo caccerò fuori;

all that the Father doth give to me will come unto me; and him who is coming unto me, I may in no wise cast without,

38 p erché sono disceso dal cielo non per fare la mia volontà, ma la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato.

because I have come down out of the heaven, not that I may do my will, but the will of Him who sent me.

39 Q uesta è la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato: che io non perda nessuno di quelli che egli mi ha dati, ma che li risusciti nell’ultimo giorno.

`And this is the will of the Father who sent me, that all that He hath given to me I may not lose of it, but may raise it up in the last day;

40 P oiché questa è la volontà del Padre mio: che chiunque contempla il Figlio e crede in lui, abbia vita eterna; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno».

and this is the will of Him who sent me, that every one who is beholding the Son, and is believing in him, may have life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day.'

41 P erciò i Giudei mormoravano di lui perché aveva detto: «Io sono il pane che è disceso dal cielo».

The Jews, therefore, were murmuring at him, because he said, `I am the bread that came down out of the heaven;'

42 D icevano: «Non è costui Gesù, il figlio di Giuseppe, del quale conosciamo il padre e la madre? Come mai ora dice: “Io sono disceso dal cielo”?»

and they said, `Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then saith this one -- Out of the heaven I have come down?'

43 G esù rispose loro: «Non mormorate tra di voi.

Jesus answered, therefore, and said to them, `Murmur not one with another;

44 N essuno può venire a me se il Padre che mi ha mandato non lo attira; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.

no one is able to come unto me, if the Father who sent me may not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day;

45 È scritto nei profeti: “Saranno tutti istruiti da Dio”. Chiunque ha udito il Padre e ha imparato da lui, viene a me.

it is having been written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God; every one therefore who heard from the Father, and learned, cometh to me;

46 P erché nessuno ha visto il Padre, se non colui che è da Dio; egli ha visto il Padre.

not that any one hath seen the Father, except he who is from God, he hath seen the Father.

47 I n verità, in verità vi dico: chi crede ha vita eterna.

`Verily, verily, I say to you, He who is believing in me, hath life age-during;

48 I o sono il pane della vita.

I am the bread of the life;

49 I vostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto e morirono.

your fathers did eat the manna in the wilderness, and they died;

50 Q uesto è il pane che discende dal cielo, affinché chi ne mangia non muoia.

this is the bread that out of the heaven is coming down, that any one may eat of it, and not die.

51 I o sono il pane vivente che è disceso dal cielo; se uno mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno; e il pane che io darò per la vita del mondo è la mia carne ».

`I am the living bread that came down out of the heaven; if any one may eat of this bread he shall live -- to the age; and the bread also that I will give is my flesh, that I will give for the life of the world.'

52 I Giudei dunque discutevano tra di loro, dicendo: «Come può costui darci da mangiare la sua carne?»

The Jews, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, `How is this one able to give us flesh to eat?'

53 P erciò Gesù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che se non mangiate la carne del Figlio dell’uomo e non bevete il suo sangue, non avete vita in voi.

Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, If ye may not eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and may not drink his blood, ye have no life in yourselves;

54 C hi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue ha vita eterna; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.

he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, hath life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day;

55 P erché la mia carne è vero cibo e il mio sangue è vera bevanda.

for my flesh truly is food, and my blood truly is drink;

56 C hi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue dimora in me, e io in lui.

he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, doth remain in me, and I in him.

57 C ome il Padre vivente mi ha mandato e io vivo a motivo del Padre, così chi mi mangia vivrà anch’egli a motivo di me.

`According as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, he also who is eating me, even that one shall live because of me;

58 Q uesto è il pane che è disceso dal cielo; non come quello che hanno mangiato i padri e sono morti; chi mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno».

this is the bread that came down out of the heaven; not as your fathers did eat the manna, and died; he who is eating this bread shall live -- to the age.'

59 Q ueste cose disse Gesù, insegnando nella sinagoga di Capernaum. Gesù mette alla prova la lealtà dei discepoli

These things he said in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum;

60 P erciò molti dei suoi discepoli, dopo aver udito, dissero: «Questo parlare è duro; chi può ascoltarlo?»

many, therefore, of his disciples having heard, said, `This word is hard; who is able to hear it?'

61 G esù, sapendo dentro di sé che i suoi discepoli mormoravano di ciò, disse loro: «Questo vi scandalizza?

And Jesus having known in himself that his disciples are murmuring about this, said to them, `Doth this stumble you?

62 E che sarebbe se vedeste il Figlio dell’uomo ascendere dov’era prima?

if then ye may behold the Son of Man going up where he was before?

63 È lo Spirito che vivifica; la carne non è di alcuna utilità; le parole che vi ho dette sono spirito e vita.

the spirit it is that is giving life; the flesh doth not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life;

64 M a tra di voi ci sono alcuni che non credono». Gesù sapeva infatti fin dal principio chi erano quelli che non credevano e chi era colui che lo avrebbe tradito.

but there are certain of you who do not believe;' for Jesus had known from the beginning who they are who are not believing, and who is he who will deliver him up,

65 E diceva: «Per questo vi ho detto che nessuno può venire a me se non gli è dato dal Padre ».

and he said, `Because of this I have said to you -- No one is able to come unto me, if it may not have been given him from my Father.'

66 D a allora molti dei suoi discepoli si tirarono indietro e non andavano più con lui.

From this many of his disciples went away backward, and were no more walking with him,

67 P erciò Gesù disse ai dodici: «Non volete andarvene anche voi?»

Jesus, therefore, said to the twelve, `Do ye also wish to go away?'

68 S imon Pietro gli rispose: «Signore, da chi andremmo noi? Tu hai parole di vita eterna!

Simon Peter, therefore, answered him, `Sir, unto whom shall we go? thou hast sayings of life age-during;

69 E noi abbiamo creduto e abbiamo conosciuto che tu sei il Santo di Dio ».

and we have believed, and we have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.'

70 G esù rispose loro: «Non ho io scelto voi dodici? Eppure uno di voi è un diavolo!»

Jesus answered them, `Did not I choose you -- the twelve? and of you -- one is a devil.

71 E gli parlava di Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota, perché questi, uno dei dodici, stava per tradirlo.

And he spake of Judas, Simon's, Iscariot, for he was about to deliver him up, being one of the twelve.
