1 A fter these things Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee, of Tiberias,
After these things Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee (of Tiberias),
2 a nd a great crowd followed him, because they saw the signs which he wrought upon the sick.
and there was following him a great multitude, because they were seeing his signs that he was doing on the ailing;
3 A nd Jesus went up into the mountain, and there sat with his disciples:
and Jesus went up to the mount, and he was there sitting with his disciples,
4 b ut the passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
and the passover was nigh, the feast of the Jews.
5 J esus then, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great crowd is coming to him, says to Philip, Whence shall we buy loaves that these may eat?
Jesus then having lifted up eyes and having seen that a great multitude doth come to him, saith unto Philip, `Whence shall we buy loaves, that these may eat?' --
6 B ut this he said trying him, for he knew what he was going to do.
and this he said, trying him, for he himself had known what he was about to do.
7 P hilip answered him, Loaves for two hundred denarii are not sufficient for them, that each may have some little.
Philip answered him, `Two hundred denaries' worth of loaves are not sufficient to them, that each of them may receive some little;'
8 O ne of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, says to him,
one of his disciples -- Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter -- saith to him,
9 T here is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fishes; but this, what is it for so many?
`There is one little lad here who hath five barley loaves, and two fishes, but these -- what are they to so many?'
10 J esus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place: the men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.
And Jesus said, `Make the men to sit down;' and there was much grass in the place, the men then sat down, in number, as it were, five thousand,
11 A nd Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed to those that were set down; and in like manner of the small fishes as much as they would.
and Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those reclining, in like manner, also of the little fishes as much as they wished.
12 A nd when they had been filled, he says to his disciples, Gather together the fragments which are over and above, that nothing may be lost.
And when they were filled, he saith to his disciples, `Gather together the broken pieces that are over, that nothing may be lost;'
13 T hey gathered therefore together, and filled twelve hand-baskets full of fragments of the five barley loaves, which were over and above to those that had eaten.
they gathered together, therefore, and filled twelve hand-baskets with broken pieces, from the five barley loaves that were over to those having eaten.
14 T he men therefore, having seen the sign which Jesus had done, said, This is truly the prophet which is coming into the world.
The men, then, having seen the sign that Jesus did, said -- `This is truly the Prophet, who is coming to the world;'
15 J esus therefore knowing that they were going to come and seize him, that they might make king, departed again to the mountain himself alone.
Jesus, therefore, having known that they are about to come, and to take him by force that they may make him king, retired again to the mountain himself alone.
16 B ut when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea,
And when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
17 a nd having gone on board ship, they went over the sea to Capernaum. And it had already become dark, and Jesus had not come to them,
and having entered into the boat, they were going over the sea to Capernaum, and darkness had already come, and Jesus had not come unto them,
18 a nd the sea was agitated by a strong wind blowing.
the sea also -- a great wind blowing -- was being raised,
19 H aving rowed then about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they see Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the ship; and they were frightened.
having pushed onwards, therefore, about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and coming nigh to the boat, and they were afraid;
20 B ut he says to them, It is I: be not afraid.
and he saith to them, `I am, be not afraid;'
21 T hey were willing therefore to receive him into the ship; and immediately the ship was at the land to which they went.
they were willing then to receive him into the boat, and immediately the boat came unto the land to which they were going.
22 O n the morrow the crowd which stood on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little ship there except that into which his disciples had got, and that Jesus had not gone with his disciples into the ship, but his disciples had gone away alone;
On the morrow, the multitude that was standing on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little boat there except one -- that into which his disciples entered -- and that Jesus went not in with his disciples into the little boat, but his disciples went away alone,
23 ( but other little ships out of Tiberias came near to the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks;)
(and other little boats came from Tiberias, nigh the place where they did eat the bread, the Lord having given thanks),
24 w hen therefore the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they got into the ships, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
when therefore the multitude saw that Jesus is not there, nor his disciples, they also themselves did enter into the boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus;
25 A nd having found him the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when art thou arrived here?
and having found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, `Rabbi, when hast thou come hither?'
26 J esus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me not because ye have seen signs, but because ye have eaten of the loaves and been filled.
Jesus answered them and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were satisfied;
27 W ork not the food which perishes, but the food which abides unto life eternal, which the Son of man shall give to you; for him has the Father sealed, God.
work not for the food that is perishing, but for the food that is remaining to life age-during, which the Son of Man will give to you, for him did the Father seal -- God.'
28 T hey said therefore to him, What should we do that we may work the works of God?
They said therefore unto him, `What may we do that we may work the works of God?'
29 J esus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he has sent.
Jesus answered and said to them, `This is the work of God, that ye may believe in him whom He did send.'
30 T hey said therefore to him, What sign then doest thou that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work?
They said therefore to him, `What sign, then, dost thou, that we may see and may believe thee? what dost thou work?
31 O ur fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.
our fathers the manna did eat in the wilderness, according as it is having been written, Bread out of the heaven He gave them to eat.'
32 J esus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, not Moses that has given you the bread out of heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.
Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread out of the heaven; but my Father doth give you the true bread out of the heaven;
33 F or the bread of God is he who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.
for the bread of God is that which is coming down out of the heaven, and giving life to the world.'
34 T hey said therefore to him, Lord, ever give to us this bread.
They said, therefore, unto him, `Sir, always give us this bread.'
35 J esus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger, and he that believes on me shall never thirst at any time.
And Jesus said to them, `I am the bread of the life; he who is coming unto me may not hunger, and he who is believing in me may not thirst -- at any time;
36 B ut I have said to you, that ye have also seen me and do not believe.
but I said to you, that ye also have seen me, and ye believe not;
37 A ll that the Father gives me shall come to me, and him that comes to me I will not at all cast out.
all that the Father doth give to me will come unto me; and him who is coming unto me, I may in no wise cast without,
38 F or I am come down from heaven, not that I should do my will, but the will of him that has sent me.
because I have come down out of the heaven, not that I may do my will, but the will of Him who sent me.
39 A nd this is the will of him that has sent me, that of all that he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up in the last day.
`And this is the will of the Father who sent me, that all that He hath given to me I may not lose of it, but may raise it up in the last day;
40 F or this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son, and believes on him, should have life eternal; and I will raise him up at the last day.
and this is the will of Him who sent me, that every one who is beholding the Son, and is believing in him, may have life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day.'
41 T he Jews therefore murmured about him, because he said, I am the bread which has come down out of heaven.
The Jews, therefore, were murmuring at him, because he said, `I am the bread that came down out of the heaven;'
42 A nd they said, Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then does he say, I am come down out of heaven?
and they said, `Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then saith this one -- Out of the heaven I have come down?'
43 J esus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves.
Jesus answered, therefore, and said to them, `Murmur not one with another;
44 N o one can come to me except the Father who has sent me draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day.
no one is able to come unto me, if the Father who sent me may not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day;
45 I t is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every one that has heard from the Father, and has learned, comes to me;
it is having been written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God; every one therefore who heard from the Father, and learned, cometh to me;
46 n ot that any one has seen the Father, except he who is of God, he has seen the Father.
not that any one hath seen the Father, except he who is from God, he hath seen the Father.
47 V erily, verily, I say to you, He that believes has life eternal.
`Verily, verily, I say to you, He who is believing in me, hath life age-during;
48 I am the bread of life.
I am the bread of the life;
49 Y our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died.
your fathers did eat the manna in the wilderness, and they died;
50 T his is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.
this is the bread that out of the heaven is coming down, that any one may eat of it, and not die.
51 I am the living bread which has come down out of heaven: if any one shall have eaten of this bread he shall live for ever; but the bread withal which I shall give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
`I am the living bread that came down out of the heaven; if any one may eat of this bread he shall live -- to the age; and the bread also that I will give is my flesh, that I will give for the life of the world.'
52 T he Jews therefore contended among themselves, saying, How can he give us this flesh to eat?
The Jews, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, `How is this one able to give us flesh to eat?'
53 J esus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Unless ye shall have eaten the flesh of the Son of man, and drunk his blood, ye have no life in yourselves.
Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, If ye may not eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and may not drink his blood, ye have no life in yourselves;
54 H e that eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up at the last day:
he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, hath life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day;
55 f or my flesh is truly food and my blood is truly drink.
for my flesh truly is food, and my blood truly is drink;
56 H e that eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him.
he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, doth remain in me, and I in him.
57 A s the living Father has sent me and I live on account of the Father, he also who eats me shall live also on account of me.
`According as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, he also who is eating me, even that one shall live because of me;
58 T his is the bread which has come down out of heaven. Not as the fathers ate and died: he that eats this bread shall live for ever.
this is the bread that came down out of the heaven; not as your fathers did eat the manna, and died; he who is eating this bread shall live -- to the age.'
59 T hese things he said in synagogue, teaching in Capernaum.
These things he said in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum;
60 M any therefore of his disciples having heard said, This word is hard; who can hear it?
many, therefore, of his disciples having heard, said, `This word is hard; who is able to hear it?'
61 B ut Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmur concerning this, said to them, Does this offend you?
And Jesus having known in himself that his disciples are murmuring about this, said to them, `Doth this stumble you?
62 I f then ye see the Son of man ascending up where he was before?
if then ye may behold the Son of Man going up where he was before?
63 I t is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life.
the spirit it is that is giving life; the flesh doth not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life;
64 B ut there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would deliver him up.
but there are certain of you who do not believe;' for Jesus had known from the beginning who they are who are not believing, and who is he who will deliver him up,
65 A nd he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no one can come to me unless it be given to him from the Father.
and he said, `Because of this I have said to you -- No one is able to come unto me, if it may not have been given him from my Father.'
66 F rom that many of his disciples went away back and walked no more with him.
From this many of his disciples went away backward, and were no more walking with him,
67 J esus therefore said to the twelve, Will ye also go away?
Jesus, therefore, said to the twelve, `Do ye also wish to go away?'
68 S imon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast words of life eternal;
Simon Peter, therefore, answered him, `Sir, unto whom shall we go? thou hast sayings of life age-during;
69 a nd we have believed and known that thou art the holy one of God.
and we have believed, and we have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.'
70 J esus answered them, Have not I chosen you the twelve? and of you one is a devil.
Jesus answered them, `Did not I choose you -- the twelve? and of you -- one is a devil.
71 N ow he spoke of Judas of Simon, Iscariote, for he should deliver him up, being one of the twelve.
And he spake of Judas, Simon's, Iscariot, for he was about to deliver him up, being one of the twelve.
