1 A nd he entered and passed through Jericho.
And having entered, he was passing through Jericho,
2 A nd behold, a man by name called Zacchaeus, and he was chief tax-gatherer, and he was rich.
and lo, a man, by name called Zaccheus, and he was a chief tax-gatherer, and he was rich,
3 A nd he sought to see Jesus who he was: and he could not for the crowd, because he was little in stature.
and he was seeking to see Jesus, who he is, and was not able for the multitude, because in stature he was small,
4 A nd running on before, he got up into a sycamore that he might see him, for he was going to pass that.
and having run forward before, he went up on a sycamore, that he may see him, because through that he was about to pass by.
5 A nd when he came up to the place, Jesus looked up and saw him, and said to him, Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for to-day I must remain in thy house.
And as Jesus came up to the place, having looked up, he saw him, and said unto him, `Zaccheus, having hastened, come down, for to-day in thy house it behoveth me to remain;'
6 A nd he made haste and came down, and received him with joy.
and he having hastened did come down, and did receive him rejoicing;
7 A nd all murmured when they saw, saying, He has turned in to lodge with a sinful man.
and having seen, they were all murmuring, saying -- `With a sinful man he went in to lodge!'
8 B ut Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I return fourfold.
And Zaccheus having stood, said unto the Lord, `Lo, the half of my goods, sir, I give to the poor, and if of any one anything I did take by false accusation, I give back fourfold.'
9 A nd Jesus said to him, To-day salvation is come to this house, inasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham;
And Jesus said unto him -- `To-day salvation did come to this house, inasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham;
10 f or the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which is lost.
for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.'
11 B ut as they were listening to these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God was about to be immediately manifested.
And while they are hearing these things, having added he spake a simile, because of his being nigh to Jerusalem, and of their thinking that the reign of God is about presently to be made manifest.
12 H e said therefore, A certain high-born man went to a distant country to receive for himself a kingdom and return.
He said therefore, `A certain man of birth went on to a far country, to take to himself a kingdom, and to return,
13 A nd having called his own ten bondmen, he gave to them ten minas, and said to them, Trade while I am coming.
and having called ten servants of his own, he gave to them ten pounds, and said unto them, Do business -- till I come;
14 B ut his citizens hated him, and sent an embassy after him, saying, We will not that this should reign over us.
and his citizens were hating him, and did send an embassy after him, saying, We do not wish this one to reign over us.
15 A nd it came to pass on his arrival back again, having received the kingdom, that he desired these bondmen to whom he gave the money to be called to him, in order that he might know what every one had gained by trading.
`And it came to pass, on his coming back, having taken the kingdom, that he commanded these servants to be called to him, to whom he gave the money, that he might know what any one had done in business.
16 A nd the first came up, saying, Lord, thy mina has produced ten minas.
`And the first came near, saying, Sir, thy pound did gain ten pounds;
17 A nd he said to him, Well, thou good bondman; because thou hast been faithful in that which is least, be thou in authority over ten cities.
and he said to him, Well done, good servant, because in a very little thou didst become faithful, be having authority over ten cities.
18 A nd the second came, saying, Lord, thy mina has made five minas.
`And the second came, saying, Sir, thy pound made five pounds;
19 A nd he said also to this one, And thou, be over five cities.
and he said also to this one, And thou, become thou over five cities.
20 A nd another came, saying, Lord, lo, thy mina, which I have kept laid up in a towel.
`And another came, saying, Sir, lo, thy pound, that I had lying away in a napkin;
21 F or I feared thee because thou art a harsh man: thou takest up what thou hast not laid down, and thou reapest what thou hast not sowed.
for I was afraid of thee, because thou art an austere man; thou takest up what thou didst not lay down, and reapest what thou didst not sow.
22 H e says to him, Out of thy mouth will I judge thee, wicked bondman: thou knewest that I am a harsh man, taking up what I have not laid down and reaping what I have not sowed.
`And he saith to him, Out of thy mouth I will judge thee, evil servant: thou knewest that I am an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow!
23 A nd why didst thou not give my money to bank; and I should have received it, at my coming, with interest?
and wherefore didst thou not give my money to the bank, and I, having come, with interest might have received it?
24 A nd he said to those that stood by, Take from him the mina and give to him who has the ten minas.
`And to those standing by he said, Take from him the pound, and give to him having the ten pounds --
25 A nd they said to him, Lord, he has ten minas.
(and they said to him, Sir, he hath ten pounds) --
26 F or I say unto you, that to every one that has shall be given; but from him that has not, that even which he has shall be taken from him.
for I say to you, that to every one having shall be given, and from him not having, also what he hath shall be taken from him,
27 M oreover those mine enemies, who would not me to reign over them, bring them here and slay before me.
but those my enemies, who did not wish me to reign over them, bring hither and slay before me.'
28 A nd having said these things, he went on before, going up to Jerusalem.
And having said these things, he went on before, going up to Jerusalem.
29 A nd it came to pass as he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the mountain called of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
And it came to pass, as he came nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, unto the mount called of the Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
30 s aying, Go into the village over against, in which ye will find, on entering it, a colt tied up, on which no of man ever sat at any time: loose it and lead it.
having said, Go away to the village over-against, in which, entering into, ye shall find a colt bound, on which no one of men did ever sit, having loosed it, bring;
31 A nd if any one ask you, Why do ye loose ? thus shall ye say to him, Because the Lord has need of it.
and if any one doth question you, Wherefore do ye loose ? thus ye shall say to him -- The Lord hath need of it.'
32 A nd they that were sent, having gone their way, found as he had said to them.
And those sent, having gone away, found according as he said to them,
33 A nd as they were loosing the colt, its masters said to them, Why loose ye the colt?
and while they are loosing the colt, its owners said unto them, `Why loose ye the colt?'
34 A nd they said, Because the Lord has need of it.
and they said, `The Lord hath need of it;'
35 A nd they led it to Jesus; and having cast their own garments on the colt, they put Jesus on.
and they brought it unto Jesus, and having cast their garments upon the colt, they did set Jesus upon it.
36 A nd as he went, they strewed their clothes in the way.
And as he is going, they were spreading their garments in the way,
37 A nd as he drew near, already at the descent of the mount of Olives, all the multitude of the disciples began, rejoicing, to praise God with a loud voice for all the works of power which they had seen,
and as he is coming nigh now, at the descent of the mount of the Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began rejoicing to praise God with a great voice for all the mighty works they had seen,
38 s aying, Blessed the King that comes in the name of Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
saying, `blessed he who is coming, a king in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.'
39 A nd some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him, Teacher, rebuke thy disciples.
And certain of the Pharisees from the multitude said unto him, `Teacher, rebuke thy disciples;'
40 A nd he answering said to them, I say unto you, If these shall be silent, the stones will cry out.
and he answering said to them, `I say to you, that, if these shall be silent, the stones will cry out!'
41 A nd as he drew near, seeing the city, he wept over it,
And when he came nigh, having seen the city, he wept over it,
42 s aying, If thou hadst known, even thou, even at least in this thy day, the things that are for thy peace: but now they are hid from thine eyes;
saying -- `If thou didst know, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things for thy peace; but now they were hid from thine eyes.
43 f or days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall make a palisaded mound about thee, and shall close thee around, and keep thee in on every side,
`Because days shall come upon thee, and thine enemies shall cast around thee a rampart, and compass thee round, and press thee on every side,
44 a nd shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children in thee; and shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone: because thou knewest not the season of thy visitation.
and lay thee low, and thy children within thee, and they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone, because thou didst not know the time of thy inspection.'
45 A nd entering into the temple, he began to cast out those that sold and bought in it,
And having entered into the temple, he began to cast forth those selling in it, and those buying,
46 s aying to them, It is written, My house is a house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of robbers.
saying to them, `It hath been written, My house is a house of prayer -- but ye made it a den of robbers.'
47 A nd he was teaching day by day in the temple: and the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
And he was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests and the scribes were seeking to destroy him -- also the chiefs of the people --
48 a nd did not find what they could do, for all the people hung on him to hear.
and they were not finding what they shall do, for all the people were hanging on him, hearing him.
